Comment: One of the best classes I've taken at Cal, mainly because of Professor Watts. He is extremely enthusiastic and classes are almost never interesting. A lot is covered in this course and it is pretty important to read some of the readings but you don't have to read everything. Exams are pretty chill, final was a take home essay. There aren't many assignments so it's important to put some time into the few in order to get a good grade.

Comment: Took the class P/NP. Can't really speak to how helpful Watts was, because I never went to office hours. One thing I didn't like was how all of the grading of subjective papers was done by GSIs

Comment: Love Professor Watts! Love. Best class ever. He packs in a lot and gives you a great overview of the Development realm. The essays are straight forward and the exam is somewhat challenging but not bad at all (although it helps to create a google doc with key terms and participate in study groups). He is a very charismatic speaker and his lectures are always engaging. Take this class.

Comment: An amazing lecturer. I loved the lectures and learning about the course material (but the end of the semester it got a little boring with water and forests). I enjoyed his class a lot, however...SO MUCH WORK AND READING. I did all of the reading and went to every lecture. His lectures tend to be scattered, I rate him high for his enthusiasm and knowledge, but organization is low. There are three major projects for his class - a lot of work and research. My GSI was Alberto. He was awful. SO unorganized. I felt like his discussions were useless. I had Zoe for a little bit in the beginning - she's GREAT! very organized, has a lesson for every discussion and really helps you learn the material. The exams were easy - midterm was straightforward and the final was a take home essay. This is a very demanding class. When he says that he expects a lot - boy, he really does.

Comment: An incredibly entertaining, passionate, knowledgeable and disorganized lecturer! He goes on slight tangents and talks about so many different things that you're not sure what to take notes on. If you do the readings before lecture, you'll know what to take notes on (ppts = rehash of main ideas of readings)...but no one really does the readings. Assignments take up a LOT of time and exams are based on basic ideas from readings and lecture. For exams, try to use phrases you hear in lecture or section. Sometimes Watts will disappear to travel to another part of the world for god knows what so you'll watch documentaries in class. Still, the class was very interesting. A lot like AP Human. Even if you won't pay attention in lecture, go just to hear Watts curse and move his arms frantically as he talks about development; he'll keep you laughing and awake.

Comment: Watts is a hilarious madman! He's very passionate lecturer and has had significant experience in the development studies field. Unfortunately, this class is not as great as he is. It requires a ton of reading and the lectures can get repetitive and dull. The subject matter can be very interesting at times though, especially if you are interested in poverty and social development. I would only recommend this class to someone who is truly interested in the developing and underdeveloped world. Also, the exams are graded really easily so that's a plus!

Comment: Watts is a great speaker. He is incredibly passionate about he does. The problem is, no one really knows what he does, not even himself. Development Studies is a discipline that arose fairly recently. Because of this, the field is incredibly disorganized. Terms are not standardized, and half the time, you have no idea what they are talking about. If you are a person who likes to start from a bedrock of definitions, and then build up your understanding from a solid foundation, this is not the class for you. You will find yourself constantly frustrated as you grind through the readings and attend lectures. Though passionate and enthusiastic, Watt's lectures poorly organized. What this means is that each class you will spend the first half of the class reviewing last class's material. This happened every class. Without exception. Though the class deals with pressing topics (gender inequality, water shortages, food shortages, income inequality), because the field is in such disarray, the class itself is disorganized. And this is why I'm giving it a lower rating.

Comment: A lot of papers to write. Very good lecturer, but oftentimes people did not know what was going on. I took this as a breadth course my freshman year and was surprised to see a ton of DS majors who basically kicked my butt. Being a science major...I still landed myself with an A-....so the course isn't TOO hard. Get a good GSI.

Comment: I really enjoyed this class as Professor Watts is very dynamic and interesting. The lectures were often tangential, though, which made the class somewhat unstructured. I felt overall the class was worth taking and presented a lot of information that causes you to think critically about challenges facing development.

Comment: I loved this class! Even though it did get depressing. The class should be taken by every student on campus to raise awareness about the fact that there are real world problems going on outside of the little bubbles we live in. Very eye-opening. If you don't pay attention in class, though, it is easy to fall asleep. Professor Watts is a very passionate and committed lecturer who has worked in Nigeria for years as his main concentration of study. Lots of movies and research based assignments but grading is lenient and make sure to go to office hours! I still go to him for advice about studying abroad and issues about my new major :)

Comment: Very passionate about development issues, but tended to go on a lot of tangents during lectures that made it difficult to know what I should have been taking notes on. Lectures were also pretty repetitive, but I guess that's good for reviewing important concepts. Readings were usually fairly interesting, but could be dense and lengthy. Finals and midterms are decent but longish, and most assignments are graded fairly leniently, so long as you do in-text citations!

Comment: Fantastic professor for his "What is Modernism?" Seminar. He's very passionate about the material, loves to share his thoughts & foster discussion, and in general brings up a lot of interesting perspectives. It's an awesome class to take and a quintessential small-size discussion seminar where there's lots of discussion and interaction. Readings could be on the long and/or dry side sometimes.

Comment: Prof. Watts, or Michael as he likes to be called, is just plain awesome. I took this class "What does it mean to be modern?" with him and I have to say it was a very enjoyable experience. He is a fun and insightful professor to have. The readings can be long but I liked having read them in the end. I hope you'll like them too!!

Comment: the BEST professor at CAL. He is the reason I switched to Geography (and I'm glad I did, the department is incredible). The reading list is scary, but he points out the most important readings each week (like 2 relatively short) which are key. It turned out to be a relatively reading light class. Does a documentary film assignment and the list of documentaries is great, i still watch them. The take home exams were lengthy, but as an introductory course he balances depth and breadth.
