Comment: a lot of work as this class meets everyday. listening assignments can be super tough if you are total beginner like I was. Yang is kinda strict with the pronunciation which cost me a lot of points :(

Comment: Great class. I learned a lot of Chinese. Some of the homework assignments were tedious. The GSI who taught my section was amazing and very funny. All the GSIs and Yang Laoshi were very helpful at office hours.

Comment: Great class to take if you want to continue Chinese. At the end of 1B you should have a solid ability to speak, read, and write common Chinese and be able to get around.

Comment: Yang Lao Shi is very enthusiastic and very helpful. One of the best professors at Cal. Still, there's quite alot of assignments/quizzes and its pretty easy to fall behind...

Comment: Yang Laoshi only taught on Fridays. She is a very good teacher although very strict. She expects you to learn the material on your own. I had Hsu Laoshi 4 days of the week. She is very kind and patient and loves to teach. She actually cares for her students, which is rare to find among college professors. Her office hours were extremely helpful. I highly recommend taking Chinese with her. Although they were good teachers, the class overall is extremely difficult. Be prepared to spend at least 2 hours everyday studying Chinese (including the weekends)

Comment: If you have a strong background in writing and speaking, you'll have an easy time in the class. Be prepared to speak in front of your classmates because for the oral tests, you basically go up and perform your script that you've prepared. The assignments are time consuming too.

Comment: Professor is semi-strict, but genuinely cares about the course and her students. There is a lot of work for this five unit course, but it is mostly tedious rather than difficult. It generally takes a week and a half to finish a chapter in the textbook, and for each chapter there is a composition, vocab test, listening homework, language lab, and workbook homework. Every two chapters there is a written and oral exam. There is no final, the exams are worth most of your grade. As long as you keep up with the assignments, this is a really good class to improve your Chinese. The lessons in the book are entertaining.
