ECON 100B (Summer 2009)

Comment: The instructor clearly didn't care about teaching the class. While the class is very useful and informative, Shomali added nothing that I couldn't have gotten from the textbook.

Comment: I didn't learn anything in this class, but got an A+. You simply have to memorize the textbook and go to section. The exams were all multiple choice. What was also useful was that my GSI had past exams for Shomali's class so you could search some of those questions on Google and get more questions from the same test bank. I also never went to class, pretty pointless.

Comment: He made me totally lose interest in econ. Class is really easy, but I learned more about macro from Econ 1 than from his class. Being an 8AM is certainly not the only reason why only about 5 people out of a hundred or so show up to lecture

Comment: Really easy class, especially since his exams are mostly MCQs. Didn't really learn much from the class, but he had a few interesting stories which he shared during lectures.

Comment: Shomali should not teach this class anymore because students can't get anything out of it. What he taught rarely matched with the homework assignments/tests, so discussion sections were the only useful things I got out of it. There were 2 midterms, weekly homework assignments, and a final.

Comment: Tests are open book. But make sure you know how to do most things because there is not enough time to figure out every question using the book. The test questions are from the book's test bank. If you can do all the book questions you are fine. Not the best at teaching so you need to rely on the book.

Comment: Prof Shomali's lectures are pretty interesting since he used to work for BoA before becoming a lecturer and he has lots of good stories about his time in the industry. 2 midterms and 1 final composed of 25 multiple choice questions each. MTs/Final are open book but not open notes. Class is not curved so what you get on the midterms/final will be your final score.Questions on the midterms/final are not too hard but you should be familiar with the formulas in the book. If you are reading the book for the first time during the midterm/final, chances are you're screwed. Homework questions are from the textbook. Buy the solns manual for the textbook since some of the questions in the textbook are actually quite hard. You'll need a financial calculator for this class, mostly just for the chapters on bonds but your regular TI-83/xx graphing calculator can also double as a financial calculator so you can just use that.

Comment: Awful prof. Doesn't teach you anything. Reading the book is far more useful. Material can be difficult and he is not helpful at all.

Comment: If you want to learn, avoid this professor. He makes this course almost juvenile. His homework and tests are ridiculously easy. His lectures are, I would say, above average but of little substance. Had I bought a book for this course, I would prefer to read it during lectures instead of listening to him. But I didn't buy the book and I'm still getting >95% on the tests. His tests are open book but not open notes, which goes to show you how illogical this guy is. He usually makes multiple choice exams so that's a plus. tl;dr easy professor but you won't learn much...

Comment: Assignments are straight out of the book. Exams are open book and are really easy if you did the homework and just had a look through. Only somewhat difficult if you're trying to read the chapters for the first time. You do learn some things, but nothing overly complicated. The math is pretty easy, since formulas are already provided and you don't have to derive them. Just know the assumptions for each formula (same if you take UGBA 103). Lecture was at 8AM, but they weren't essential. He did have some funny stories and it is a good time to flip through the book. That way you don't have to spend time at home except maybe 1, 2 hours per week for homework.
