Comment: I was expecting much more profound insight into gender issues, but it reached the point where the class's biases were obstructing my attempt at understanding highly complex issues. If anyone made any comments that disagreed with her opinions, it was rejected without much discussion. Most of the course was depressing. If you want to learn about gender issues, I'd probably recommend Barnes. (The class was an easy A, so if that's what you want out of a class, go for it.)

Comment: Professor is great. During lectures (2 hours long) she goes deeper into the material, gives details and her insights. She probes students for discussion and patiently waits. We watched a bunch of films that were quite interesting and helped a lot with the required papers.

Comment: Two hour long lecture...gets so tiring after the first hour Unorganized lectures Great videos Easy quizzes Cute sense of humor but easy to miss if not paying attention Lags when it comes to grading and returning work Poor encourager of discussions in class Interesting readings...but she doesn't do the best job at tying them together Overall she's okay, especially if you love the subject! :)

Comment: I loved this course! So many interesting readings that I actually looked forward to completing. The 2 hour lecture can get tiresome but we usually watch videos. I was disappointed that Barnes ended up not teaching this course at the last minute, but Agis has been an okay prof. Sometimes her lectures are all over the place but she has a lot of interesting insights for the field.

Comment: Tests are easy if you do some of the readings. Not a time consuming class, considering it's 4 units (at least as of spring 2015). A lot of the readings are unnecessary (repetitive), but actually read the books because you write a paper on them and are tested on them. I didn't attend Agis's OH (so I can't fairly rate her on how helpful she is), but she seems genuine. Not the most engaging prof, but she takes attendance. She shows cool documentaries!

Comment: I went into this class unsure of what to expect really, considering I come from a conservative area where gender issues aren't exactly discussed often (although I am liberal myself). I can't say enough about this class if you want to get a glimpse at just how impactful gender can be in almost every aspect of our lives and in our human history. Admittedly, as a STEM major, I did not have time to do many of the readings in this course, but Professor Agis sums them up very nicely in lecture and even adds her own two cents. We also watched some very interesting movies in this course. As far as the class goes grading goes, she takes attendance with a sign in sheet every day, but if you have a friend that regularly goes, you could always ask them to sign you in, and there is a midterm, two five page papers, and a final. The midterm and the final were a breeze if you paid attention at all in class, and the two five page papers were on very interesting topics that you could choose from a list. My papers were both graded very fairly I thought, but a few of my friends struggled to get good grades on their papers, so I'm not sure if I just received an easy grader or what. Anyway, I came into this course expecting to just explore and to fulfill a breadth, but now I am fully intending on doing a gender and women's studies minor, so take from that what you will.

Comment: If you do the reading, her lectures will make a lot of sense. If you don't, they are extremely confusing. Take-home final was easy as was the midterm and quiz.

Comment: I am currently in this class (Spring 2013) and i would not recommend it. The material is potentially extremely interesting. However, Prof Agis stands behind the podium and drones on for an hour and a half. She does not use powerpoint or visual aids. I do not need to be entertained all of the time, but sitting in class for an hour and a half and listening to someone talk is just really hard. I feel it is disrespectful to the students' time. She also takes attendance every day, therefore forcing us to be there, but once we are there she is SO boring. We are basically a captive audience. Sometimes we watch movies, which is ok I guess. The grading for the essays so far is relatively on the easy side.

Comment: As an engineering student, GWS wasn't really an interesting topic. The teacher is enthusiastic, but often very monotonous. I passed even though I skipped one of the two papers, so overall it's very doable. There were 2 papers, 1 in-class essay/short answer midterm, and a take-home final.

Comment: I feel like this class had really great potential, but most lectures were spent listening to Professor Agis talk endlessly about the material we were learning. You occasionally get to watch a movie, most of which are pretty interesting. A handful of required books to read in order to get a good grade on the assignments/exams. She takes attendance every day too, so be weary of that. (I managed to miss about 10 days and still get an A- in the class.) I think having a general understanding of the themes of the books you're reading and of the class material should be enough to get you a good grade in the class overall.

Comment: She is very helpful in office hours, but in class, not so much. Her accent and the way in which she explains things makes lecture unclear at times. She never really answered my questions. Grading of papers and exams is very reasonable. Again, she will help you with your paper in office hours. I didn't complete all the readings, but still did well. Honestly, I think there are more interesting AC courses. This class seemed to be all over the place.

Comment: The class is super easy if you read the books assigned and understand some very basic concepts discussed in class. None of the material in the reader was actually necessary if you read the books, and I skipped most of the readings and still got an A+. The class itself is pretty boring, Agis is nice enough but the classes were hell to go to. She takes attendance but you can miss a few classes and still do fine. The grades are based on the midterm, which is easy, a take home final which is almost exactly like the midterm, and essays that are based on the books. If you can write well you'll end up with an A no problem.

Comment: Not the most enthusiastic lecturer, but she is amazingly helpful during office hours. We watch a lot of film in class and only had two 5 page papers and a midterm and a final 5 page paper. The papers weren't graded too difficult, but don't flake on the reading--make sure you understand the material, or writing could be very difficult. With her fast-paced lectures, accent, and no laptop policy, it was difficult to take notes, but overall it was an interesting class.

Comment: She's okay. I appreciate the effort that she puts into her work but to me personally, I was really bored. Make sure to attend almost all lectures because she takes attendance (I skipped about 4 and got a passing grade).

Comment: I found her very interesting. Gave very engaging lectures, at times humorous. There are 2 papers, a midterm, and a take home final. The papers are graded fairly, and the midterm was very easy/easily graded (it consisted of matching dates, identifying passages, and a short essay tying together identified passages). Overall, I would suggest taking it, especially for an AC requirement - I ended up with an A, and put in only a moderate amount of effort.

Comment: Loved the class. I wish I could take her class again in Fall 2012 but she is not teaching any class for that semester. 20% attendance, 20% weekly reflection paper (at least 1 page), 20% class presentation with 5-7paper, 40% final paper (15-17pages). Extremely helpful and knowledgeable professor. I could listen to her all day. Quite a lot of readings (at least 100 pages every meeting) but the class is relaxed. Easy A if you do your work (attend class, read the assigned readings, submit weekly reflection paper...). This is a class where input=output type of grade without over-studying. Very understanding professor. Lots of interesting films and discussions. I am horrible with papers but I got a good grade in my papers because she tells you want you need to add or omit or revise to get a better grade. She basically tells you what she is looking for. This class is not just about getting A's but this is a fun class because it is enlightening. Not a GWS major but is now totally hooked on GWS classes because of her!
