Comment: Professor Johns is an incredible professor. He never uses power points or anything but simply talks from his head and could go on for hours. I was amazed at how much he was able to recall and teach without notes or slides to help. There are no assignments in this class other than the midterm and final which are two essays worth 60% and 40% of your grade. Some of the books are interesting novels but you don't really have to read them.

Comment: The class itself was more boring than I thought it would be, not because of the content but because Professor Johns wasn't very engaging, in my opinion. He spent most of the lecture talking without asking much input from students. There was no homework other than the readings, which while they oftentimes reinforced ideas from class, were in no way necessary or very interesting. I'm not sure how to feel about the fact that our grade was only based off 2 papers - it was nice in some ways but also made it hard to get a good grade. I think Professor Johns is a great guy with a great sense of humor and he was quite willing to help at office hours, but I wish he put more effort into teaching a more engaging class.

Comment: I definitely regret taking this pass/no pass. Material is very interesting and lots of the knowledge can be found on your own if you take the time to absorb the world around you. Professor Johns knows his stuff and although I never went to office hours (nor did any of the readings), I would assume that he would be a great help. Entire class is based off of 2 papers, which are very easy. Go to lecture and you should have no problem.

Comment: Prof. Johns is extremely knowledgeable and witty. Seriously, just go to his lectures and you'll be fine. There are no assignments in class (you can choose not to read the books assigned and still do fine), only a mid-term (max. 15 page paper) and a final (max. 10 page paper).

Comment: Professor Johns is funny in the sense that he's bluntly honest. The material itself is not much different from the US History seen in high school. There's only one take home midterm and final and no homework.

Comment: Great class! Learned so much from this class, and Professor Johns knows so much about the material. Also, I was taking it P/NP, so it was also very chill. Would highly recommend as an AC class.

Comment: I knew next to nothing about the American urban experience before taking this class and I walked away learning a lot! Prof Johns is articulate, witty, and so knowledgeable- never lectures from notes, i.e. go to lecture. It's a mix of geography, history, culture, and philosophy based on novels. Work hard for getting an A but totally attainable. Go to office hours- he makes a real effort to know his students! It was a pleasure to take this class.

Comment: Although the lectures were fascinating and Johns is rarely, if ever, a bore, I am rather disappointed with the course. There are only two incredibly vague assignments that comprise your final grade, the first midterm paper (worth 60%) and the final paper (worth 40%). Johns announced that he would not be having office hours the week or two preceding the first paper. The reason for this is still baffling to me. He never explicitly stated the rationale behind his decision, but he did mention in class that it would not be fair to have office hours before a paper. Considering this paper was worth 60% of our grade, I would think that being available to one's students would be imperative. In any case, both assignments were graded quite harshly by a mystery GSI whom we never met. In addition, we were not provided with the GSI's email or even his/her name! It kills me a little to write a poor interview for a class I enjoyed so much, but there are some serious kinks in this course that need to be worked out.

Comment: The course context is extremely interesting/relevant. Professor Johns lecture style is easy to follow but I do recommend going to every lecture; he does not believe in powerpoints and your 10 page midterm and final papers are going to have to be based off of the information he gives during lecture. The assigned readings are supplements and not completely necessary. Lecture is by far the primary source. He is a very fair grader though and allows you to write the papers however you want "as long as it's good". Also has funny stories about his days as a college dropout

Comment: No HW. your grade is based on two papers. Some might think this is bad, but if you put enough effort to go to class everyday and take notes you can get at least a B. He is a very good lecturer and an enticing one at that. He is not one of those ppl that will drone on and on about something. So he never plans out what he is going to say during his lecture. Instead he has a one line header that is a specific topic then starts talking about it from the top of his head. Its incredible. However, getting a good grade does require one to read all the materials and what not. I didn't read any of the books and just paid attention during lecture and I got a B+ so not bad.

Comment: only two papers for the class but beware you have to actually try hard to get an A in this class. If you're not willing to put in the work to get a good grade I recommend taking it P/NP

Comment: This was a super interesting class (a mix of culture, history, and philosophy) that is relevant to any major. It is really clear that Johns cares so much about the subject and he always tries to answer students' questions with clarity and thoughtfulness. And don't worry--the two essays for the class are really easy (wrote them a few hours before they were due). Take this class!

Comment: Great professor, very enthusiastic and approachable. Only 2 grades: midterm paper (15 pages, 60% of final grade) and final paper (10 pages, 40% of final grade). Take notes! It's important for the papers, and the subject matter is interesting!

Comment: The material is actually quite interesting and the professor is a great lecturer. However, this class is NOT an easy A. Admittedly I am not a fantastic writer, but Johns does not give As to many people. Furthermore, the first midterm is due after the deadline to change the class to pass/no-pass, so there is no way of knowing if you can pull a good grade in the class before it's too late. I highly recommend this class as an easy pass/no-pass AC class, but if you take it for a grade, be ready to actually do the readings and take some really good notes. It's also unclear how grading works, since he only gives papers letter grades, not a percentage. Nevertheless, he's a great lecturer!

Comment: I'd recommend taking it pass/not pass as your grade is determined entirely by two papers. I found the lectures and books really interesting and would recommend this as a low-stress class. Make sure to come to lecture so you have enough information for your papers.

Comment: There are only 2 exams. 1midterm that counts for 60% and one final 40% of your grade. So if you do really bad on midterm....your grade is set and there is almost nothing you can do... I don't really recommend to take this class. It's a good lecture but if you need a good grade,.... take other AC

Comment: Nice guy, very enthusiastic about cities and very knowledgeable of most of American city history, but honestly I did not find the lecture material interesting at all and his lecturing was extremely dry to me. Only 2 papers for this class (15 page MT essay worth 60% of your grade and 10 page final worth 40%), and if you go to lectures or read the books, you'll do fine on them. Definitely glad there is no discussion section in this class as well.

Comment: Professor Johns is awesome. Very laid back class, with a professor who really cares about what he teaches. All grading is based on two easy 10 page papers where you just use your notes from class. There is some reading but it is very easy and it is NOT tested. Take it as an easy P/F AC class!
