Comment: This guy was really awesome! There is a lot of reading, but it's different than APUSH or AP World in the sense that you don't need to memorize every little detail which is nice. It's more about the bigger picture and analyzing things. Taking APUSH really helps, but it was weird because at the beginning he starts off with the Aztecs in Central America. This class is really more about North American history instead of United States history if that makes sense. Anyways he is AWESOME. He makes little jokes here and there, and he also plays music at the beginning of every class. I also went into office hours and he told me all these random stories about Abraham Lincoln that you probably won't find anywhere else. If you like US history, definitely take this class. Two essays which aren't too bad, and a midterm and final which also aren't too bad. Great freshman intro class :D

Comment: The outside readings were my favorite part of Peterson's class. He seems really motivated to teach and is very interested in the material, but his delivery and minute obsessions make lecture boring and rarely engaging. The midterm and final were easily dealt with, my GSI was very helpful, and I learned a few things. All in all a good class but he's not the most exciting professor.

Comment: A very enthusiastic professor! I myself hate history and I didn't attend any lectures after the mid-term. I read like 3 out of 8 required books, but I still passed it, so it is not a hard class in my view.

Comment: A really enthusiastic professor! He plays the songs with historical significance before almost every lecture. He's got a great sense of humour and quite a rational and logical way to bring out the course of events and the historical significance behind.

Comment: Class was stupid. "Write a paper on religion, but only use sources of 1) a cult leader who had sex with every woman in town 2) a book about how cows influenced the colonists" Class = British colonization - everything interesting about British colonization

Comment: i suck at history, so this was a extremely hard class for me. but i took it as PNP and that made it a lot easier. theres 2 essays. one 5-7 pages and one 7-10. they are HARD. topic is very broad, so you can't just read closely some books and forget about the others. i had to skim through all 9 books. Peterson is extremely enthusiastic about his topic though. i hate history but i do enjoy going to his lectures. very helpful in office hours. very friendly and easy to approach. smart man, knows his stuff well. midterms were pretty okay. just memorize key IDs and you should get around a C or B on them. i just wanted to cry when i saw the final. VERY HARD. i just stared stupidly at my final for like 10 min in shock. wanted to kill myself. not a fun class unless you like history. heavy reading. don't take it if you're looking to fulfill breadths.

Comment: There's only 1 midterm, 2 paper, and 1 final. Grades are dependent upon GSI. This class requires a lot of readings though :(

Comment: Professor Peterson is excellent. His lectures are incredibly interesting, and it's obvious that not only is he enthusiastic about the topic, but he wants us to be interested and to understand why each event is important. There is a reading assignment every week, plus whatever your GSI decides to give you. The readings vary from moving personal narratives to incredibly boring political documents. The exams are long but fair, and as long as you take good notes during the lectures, studying is no problem. But WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING. His slides are super helpful for organization, but they just have headers. You have to pay attention to what he's saying. You should be doing that anyway because he's such a funny and charismatic guy.

Comment: I think Prof. Peterson is cute, friendly and at times interesting. Most people find the lectures boring but he has some really amazing points to make and it makes it worth the boring stuff. he lectures pretty quickly so you will be writing the whole time. his essays can be pretty complex but his exams are really straight forward. he interacts VERY little with students- but plays music before class- has awesome taste for the most part- cracks some funny jokes sometimes. he is really friendly, but a little distant from the class in general. i would recommend this class and this professor!

Comment: Definitely hard to stay awake at times, especially since the room in Dwinelle is dimmed for the powerpoints. But other than that, good instructor and the lecture does give really nice detail into the course material.

Comment: not a huge fan of history but his lectures were actually very interesting. essay assignments were not that easy. since grades depend on the GSIs, get help and talk to your GSIs about the assignments. that really helped me for my essay.

Comment: Just a few essays, a midterm, and a final. Normal history stuff covered. If you took APUSH, this class will be a breeze. His lectures have a lot of pictures and he goes slow, so it gets a little boring. He makes his lectures into stories. Hard to know what you really need to know though. Didn't even buy the book and I was fine. Had a good GSI though.

Comment: Professor Peterson is very enthusiastic. He's a great story teller--makes history really interesting and fun. However, a lot of the essays are based on the readings. He doesn't go over the readings very much and the readings are difficult. I took the class PNP, so it's more enjoyable than it would be if I took it for a letter.
