Comment: Barshay is a really nice guy, but his lectures are very hard to follow. As someone else mentioned before me, he does not lecture chronologically and goes on tangents for about half the class period. This leaves him with a great portion of his lecture unfinished to be picked up in the next class, which just makes him get more behind on future lectures. Anyway, he is very knowledgeable about Japanese history and some of the things he lectured on grabbed my attention, but most of the time, I was just too lost to really know what he was talking about.

Comment: He was definitely a really monotone lecturer. The tests were fair in terms of material-- often he gave us essay questions that were super similar to the ones on the exams, but it depends on which GSI you have- that willreally determine your overall grade. I did ok in this class, but for people looking to fulfill a breadth (like me) I would pass on this. It was too time consuming for a 4 unit breadth.

Comment: Just wanted to add my 2cents. Professor Barshay loves to talk. He talks a lot, and he tangents off a lot. The class actually fell behind because he talked so much, and he canceled class once or twice because he had some out of state research to do, or something like that. However, he's very accommodating when it comes to disabled students and exams. The GSI's are what make this class. I was lucky enough to get the GSI who was very enthusiastic, helpful, and had a good mastery of the English language. The office hours I spent with him really saved me in that class.

Comment: If you like Japanese history he is your professor. He's enthusiastic, has great small interesting stores that keep the long lecture bearable. Reading assignments are hit or miss interesting. You don't really have to do all the reading, but that means paying attention during lecture. Exams are based primarily on lecture with a defining terms section based on the reading assignments. Read the key documents.

Comment: The only horrible thing about him is that he doesn't always lecture chronologically. So get a timeline and things will start to make sense. He is however, very enthusiastic about Japan and he greatly emphasizes Japan's religions: shinto and buddhism with a touch of Christianity (It was his Master Thesis, ask him about it).
