Comment: Reallly great professor; he is very helpful during and after class, and even though he didn't always have time to finish his slides, he'd come back to it the next lesson, which I really appreciated.

Comment: I guess I can't say much cause I didn't go to class LOL. BUT. From someone who didn't go to class and was only there for a total of two lectures and the exams... the class is okay. Just read the book and look over the lecture slides.

Comment: Sharpira's exams are very fair and have no surprises; he's not the most outstanding professor on campus but he's always cheerful and approachable out of class.

Comment: Professor Shapira tries to get the students to interact, which doesn't really happen. His exams, in my opinion, were decent, but you need to actually read because his powerpoints do not have much information.

Comment: Read through lab assignments carefully before each lab. Weekly quizzes not so bad.

Comment: I took this class because the reviews on ninjacourses gave promising information on doability. Honestly, though, I wasn't prepared for it. I'm sure if you thoroughly peruse the book (I hate text spaced so densely together), you'll do fine. Personally, I felt enthusiastic at the very beginning and believed the course would provide an incredibly holistic, enlightening, eye-opening outlook on topics, but that quickly deteriorated. The material is immunology heavy, more details and specifics than I was expecting, and I just didn't have the appropriate background with the information. I remember reading all the processes for T-cell and B-cell interaction, initiation, and activation--and finally feeling like I understood it--only to stare at the test dumbfounded at how they cast doubt on everything I supposedly knew. Even though they're multiple-choice, I struggled with the phrasing and left a significant portion with a "?" my first run-through to go back to later. Although I'm office hours-shy, I've heard Shapira is really helpful and accommodating to his students, so maybe balls up and approach him if you feel like you're having a hard time. Other than that, this was the first semester that implemented a one-page report, which is how I realized I was way out of my element being so unlearned the field. Overall, if you have the background, or if you're just willing to read along, this course shouldn't be a problem.

Comment: Shapira is a great guy and is very helpful. He tries to interact with students. This class is immuno heavy, so if that is not your thing, be warned. Personally, I found this class very difficult to get an A in. I studied very hard for all of the exams, but it was hard to predict what he would test on. Since there is a lot of material, this is a problem. In addition, some questions were confusingly worded. Students may be convinced, especially after the first midterm (which is easy) that this is an easy A course, but the second midterm and the final are extremely difficult. tests are multiple choice. This was the most I have struggled with a biology course at Berkeley, I got an A- in the end, maybe this field of bio just isn't my thing. This course is very useful, however, and getting a B is not that hard to do. The material was interesting, and if you already have a background in immuno, it should be easy.

Comment: Great professor, very understanding and motivating. No homework in this course other than the usual studying and weekly readings. The exams were tricky only because he likes to use questions that confuse your natural way of thinking, for example "Of the following, which one is NOT...." and if you don't know how to reword these questions the right way, then you may not do well. He is awesome during office hours and loves to help students do the best they can.

Comment: The exams can be a little difficult or straightforward, depending on how much you study, but he stated that the class isn't curved for Fall 2011. Multiple-choice, interesting class! He's a really nice guy!
