Comment: Taken with Brooks, Fall 2013. GSI: Austin Peck. 40% Lab, 20% Midterm, 40% Final. Textbook was overly detailed and not very helpful. Brooks posted all powerpoint slides on bSpace, and that's all that you really need to know. I took IB 132/132L before I took this class, but it wasn't necessary. This class expanded upon some of 132, but you could have easily taken it without 132. The material was pretty interesting, and I love how it's applicable to everyone's life. Brooks isn't as boring as other people say that he is, and he makes quite a few jokes during lecture. He just seems boring because the class is at 8am. You can definitely get by without going to lecture, as long as you understand the powerpoint slides. He does add things to slides, and there are a ton of pictures, so you will miss a decent amount of information though. Lab was very similar to 132 lab, in that a lot of the labs involved using a stationary bike and testing maximum oxygen consumption. There were usually only 1 or 2 subjects for each lab, and there wasn't enough for every person to do, so there was a ton of down time. Make sure someone has a laptop, because inputting all the data directly into an Excel document saved SO MUCH TIME. I was the go-to excel person, so that way the GSI could send out the info immediately after lab ended. There were 2 lab reports, but they were very straightforward. My recommendation is to finish them as soon as possible, and then email your GSI to get corrections. The corrections raised my grade by 5-10% each time, and it doesn't take much more effort. The class was really cool, and not much effort at all. I didn't study very much for the exams, as they're very conceptual. Make sure you can do basic math calculations, because they will test you on it. (Converting lbs to kg, calculating calories burned, etc.) The exams were short answer, and there are points associated with what they expect you to say. So, a question may be 5 points, and you get 1 point for each thing that you are supposed to say, if that makes any sense. So, if in doubt, provide more examples or explain the Cori cycle in detail. I believe that both exams had two final questions, and you only had to complete one of them, so you get a little bit of flexibility. Additionally, I did pretty crappy on the midterm (75%) and still ended up with an A- in the class, so don't worry if the first exam throws you off a bit.

Comment: Very boring lectures, he seems like he's falling asleep while lecturing. Exams are not too bad though. But he's incredibly boring.

Comment: Although his lectures can be a bit dry, Brooks has a charming sense of humor and his expertise is a valuable asset to the class.

Comment: Brooks' lectures consist of countless diagrams so I feel like you have to read the book to get a clear explanation of what's going on. Unless you can write down everything he says in class but that's difficult because he tends to mumble. He likes numbers and values so make sure you know those. Exams are fair for the most part. Watch out, some of his concepts contradict what is said in the book and is based off his research (ie: lactate shuttle hypothesis).

Comment: Brooks's exams made me cry. I forgot he taught Exercise Physiology and was huge on muscles, which sort of screwed me over on the second midterm (since it ended up being half the test). His powerpoint slides are jumbled and confusing.

Comment: Everything can be learned from the lecture slides. The book is optional. HE takes question from his iclicker questions often in tests and is very lenient in grading. There is no curve, an A- is 85%.
