Comment: The class was pretty easy to me. Problem sets are graded on completion. He's very clear in lecture. For exams though, he doesn't write them; the head GSI does. So I guess it depends on how hard the head GSI is. Overall, great professor, good class.

Comment: While the professor was generally enthusiastic and the material presented was no difficult, the head GSI who wrote the exams made getting a high grade more difficult than it should have been. This is most likely due in part to the fact that the percent of grades (A's, B's, etc.) are capped. Overall a fairly average class.

Comment: Train is a fantastic professor and a very passionate, interesting, and responsive lecturer. The only issue I had with the class was that he delegated to the head GSI to write tests, which did not necessarily reflect material taught in lecture. Further, Train runs the class so that the curve is within sections, not amongst the class as a whole. Thus, be careful that your section isn't too smart!

Comment: Great guy, great lecturer. He makes complex economic concepts easy to understand and applicable to your own life. Maybe some of them are oversimplifications because the exam material was not at all like the lectures and sections. The head GSI writes the exams, so there are math and advance concepts that are never covered before you see the test. I am taking 100A currently and find it actually easier than this class. The exams are long and hard (especially the final--which took the entire 3 hours for most people) and the curve is pretty steep. Overall it depends on your GSI and section since your grade will be weighted on how well people do in your particular section.

Problem sets are somewhat straight-forward, but the tests are another story. Exam grades are curved by section, so you're kept in the dark until the end. This isn't the class to take for an easy A. Comment: Train is an awesome lecturer! I'd definitely recommend taking the course with him (or Olney if you take it in the spring, I've heard she's great, too). He is super enthusiastic about the material and a really sweet guy, too. Cracks jokes which make lecture more entertaining than just straight-up econ. Problem sets are pretty easy but exams are HARD and what you do on p-sets is nothing like what you get asked on exams. As long as you study beforehand and know the concepts, though, they aren't impossible, just hard.

Comment: Assignments are really easy and counts a very small portion of the overall exam. But the exams are relatively hard (compared to the lectures he gives and the materials he covers). He is an enthusiastic professor - he reminded me of a KFC mascot. Anyways, having a good GSI is crucial, I think. If the GSI goes tangential or off topic, it gets hard to understand, or even confuses me.

Comment: Train is super nice, enthusiastic, and seems to be a really chill guy. That being said, people think he oversimplifies concepts and such, but don't be fooled. If you pay attention in his lecture, try to catch when he makes it a specific note to mention something that isn't on the slide itself. It's his way of hinting at exam questions and examples to the kids who actually bother to attend lecture. Other than that, be aware that GSI sections are what determine your grade on a curve, as opposed to the entire class, which is kind of idiotic because of how distinctly non-normal some distributions can be with smaller samples, but just suck it up and deal with it. Overall great class, boss the first midterm, hit above average in general, and you're set. ;)

Comment: The assignments don't really prepare you for the midterm (AT ALL to be specific). The median for midterm #1 was around 60 so don't be fooled by this lower div course. Comment: Prof. Train did a good job giving students an overview of the field. The class is largely conceptual, giving students the tools (supply-demand; price and quantity determination in perfect competition, monopoly, and everything in between; externalities; effect of taxation, trade, and currency exchange) Lectures are very good, as they tend to explain the basic economic models better than the verbose textbook. Exams usually ask you to apply the models you have learned to analyze economic problems, which I prefer over route memorization. More mathematical than I thought an introductory econ class would be, but that's probably because Prof Train is an econometrist. (He has Erdos number of 6!)
