Comment: Midterms were reasonable, final slaughtered me like a lamb. Acland is a pretty poor lecturer, and unclear about his expectations.

Comment: I LOVE ACLAND! he's definitely the best econ professor I had. Not sure why all the reviews for him are negative, maybe he was bad in other semesters but the one I took with him was great. He explains in a very clear, intuitive manner, and always had a stack of printed slides ready for us. Instead of talking at us, his lectures were very hands-on, he draws the graph and derive the equations and do the math with us on the projector; the iclicker participation points were basically just survey questions and general check your understanding questions that were not graded on right/wrong, but more on if you made the effort to come to class. I thought the problem sets were also easy albeit extremely long and tedious (~5-6 hours each), but they were designed to help you fully understand the lectures (the answers/methods were usually in the slides) and he puts up comprehensive answer keys for each of them. The midterms were fair, and modelled after the problem set but the final exam was extremely difficult. Overall, Acland is a great and funny professor who apparently had taken it upon himself to greatly improve his teaching because he cares about his students. Don't hesitate to take a class with him!

Comment: After his first semester teaching 100A, Acland must have seen his reviews and comments. He completely changed his syllabus to one that is literally 'i want to give you good grades'. 8AM lectures were a pain but the iclicker points were extremely high to compensate for that. Yes exams and problem sets are hard but go to office hours and they literally tell you the answers. I had an awesome GSI (thanks Matt!) which is how I got my A but going to the professor was also extremely helpful. If you're going to take 100A take it with Acland

Comment: Admittedly, I was very nervous before I took this class, seeing the reviews he had on ratemyprofessor and here. However, I was pleasantly surprised with Acland. He genuinely cares about helping students understand the material, so he is really helpful in office hours. Lectures are mandatory, but you get 4 free passes (which is nice to have!). He prints out the lecture slides for your convenience, which is also really helpful. He gives problem sets that are due every week (lowest 2 are dropped), and even though they can be challenging, doing them really helps you understand the material, as they are very similar to exams. Exams can be tricky and harshly graded (I once received 0/5 on a T/F question which I answered right but gave wrong explanantion) but are decent considering the class. Overall, Acland is a good professor who has really changed the class since his first semester (when the bad reviews mostly are), so only read the more recent reviews.

Comment: An excellent instructor and a generous man. I was afraid going into this class because of the horror stories I had heard but Acland made it a rather pleasant experience. The course material is a little overwhelming at first but gradually gets better/easier. Exams/problem sets are on the hard side, but class is curved well. Occasionally gives truffles in lecture for participating! Dan should always teach 100A from now on!

Comment: He's definitely improved over the last time he taught Econ 100A. There are tons of problem sets but he teaches the content really well and I don't have a problem understanding it. It's mostly the exams that are a little annoying because its hard to finish them (he sets papers that way), but he's definitely a good professor.

Comment: Acland's a nice guy and can be somewhat helpful during officers, since hes not nervous speaking to students. During his lectures he got nervous and ether was talking super fast. I didn't like the quiz before lectures since they didn't really follow the reading assignment from the night before. What made it worse was the book, his lectures, quiz's, and problem sets didn't go correlate with each other, so you had to pretty much teach your self the material.

Comment: He can't teach economics, period. For lectures, he spends a lot of time talking about random stuff. He tries to build examples using different characters such as bandits buying candy from a boy, insurance preference for zsa-zsa [and her 2 sisters]. In the end, half of lectures goes into setting up convoluted examples. In summary, the examples are extremely confusing and his presentation styles makes is even less understandable. He has a very roundabout way of explaining extremely simple concepts. The lectures itself are very much useless. The lectures start off with a quiz [that accounts for 30% of your grade] which are either extremely simple or extremely hard depending on his mood. Since the quiz accounts for biggest part of your grade, you have to spend hours preparing for lectures. The test was long with 5 problems and the last problem had part a-g (each part had a graph and calculation). Prof. Acland do not understand the level of his students and consistently give impossible problem sets. The class is confusing, the exam is too hard, and the assignment is irrelevant to the content of the lecture. To top it all off, he uses a brand new book that manage to be just as confusing as he is [the book constantly refers back to the author's own preference and spends forever building on the example]. In summary, AVOID AT ALL COST! Reference: Look at Ratemyprofessor page: 62 ratings with an average of 1.5/5 [1 being the lowest] in less than 1 semester. Enough said.

Comment: Very passionate about subject. Interesting content.... Stuff you can think about and apply out of class. Sometimes models aren't explained well in lecture the first time around. Prof Acland usually revisits tough concepts though and Tries to explain the same concept in multiple ways.

Comment: Professor Acland is overall a good professor but can be a bit scattered and hard to follow at times. the fact that econ 119 doesnt use a textbook doesnt help much in this regard either because it can be hard to figure out whats going on in the course just going off lecture notes. midterms and finals were fair and overall pretty easy

Comment: gotta admit, acland grew on me. my first impression of him was as a pretentious tool, and at the end of the semester i saw him more as a bumbling, friendly, and likeable pretentious tool. he's very enthusiastic about the material, but actually holds him back frequently as he gets lost in his love for behavioral economics and makes simple, dumb-dumb concepts more difficult than they need to be. how do i know this? because i got a fucking A+ in this class holy shit it was so easy. homework, midterms, final: they were all stupid easy like if you did any studying for this class you are getting an A i don't even understand how anything else is possible. acland's teaching style does make it sort of difficult to follow at times, but come on he gives you the fucking lecture notes and the class is webcasted. come on guys.

Comment: His lectures took a while to get used to, but he is very helpful and cares about his students. Exams were pretty difficult, you had to know the material really well to get an above average score. Some problem sets were really easy and others were hard (there were 11 total).

Comment: The problem sets were very doable and were based off the lecture material. He made forums on bSpace for people to discuss any questions regarding problem sets. Readings were relevant to lectures. Exams had challenging sections (which he often labeled 'Harder') but overall people could get a decent grade even if they didn't/couldn't answer those sections. In general, exams were fair and didn't require much math/calculations; people were mainly required to understand the material very well. Lecture was sometimes paced slowly (he talks quite quickly, but spends a lot of time on some topics and didn't get to finish the material on his lecture slides), but he was quite engaging and left time to answer questions. As a professor, he is approachable and gives good advice, so going to office hours is a great idea.
