Comment: Stankova was the best professor I've had at Berkeley, she was very clear in her lectures and focused on abstract concepts which I found very interesting. She was always very receptive to students at office hours, made herself available, and tested us vigorously but fairly. Her lectures are very vital to success in the class though, because she does such a good job explaining everything (and sometimes things that aren't explicitly in the book), so I would recommend going to all of them. Overall wonderful wonderful professor and I highly recommend.

Comment: She is a fairly good instructor and knows the material well enough to give the students a good understanding of the material - provided you went to lectures. Exams were fairly difficult as is expected, but she curved the grades. If you took BC and got a 4/5 I would recommend skipping this unless you want to revisit old information. Its basic calculus 1, but if you haven't taken it before, your understanding and grades ultimately depend on your GSI. I had vinicius gripp who was great at slowly teaching all the information and constantly repeating himself. He really pounds the content into your brain and he was clear and easy to understand.

Comment: Holy hell, her exams were hard. Definitely do-able if you attend lecture and do the homework but still very hard. GSIs were ok. I found it unfair that since GSIs wrote quizzes for their sections, some were vastly harder than others (and this didn't seem to be accounted for in the grades).

Comment: I did fine in this class without doing the homework but I had already taken Calculus before. Comment: She's a great lecturer, very enthusiastic. She encourages students to drop by office hours. Her assignments are not painfully long and it covers more of the topic she introduced in lectures. However Stankova's midterms are fairly challenging. It's challenging to earn points as she requires lengthy explanations and so forth. Her lectures are introductions to the material, you have to do outside work and delve deeper into it; homeworks can help with that.

Comment: The professor is really enthusiastic about the class, but she also goes on weird tangents to tell stories. Her lessons were good, but they don't cover everything in the homework. (Homework was optional, but it's really helpful to prepare for the weekly quizzes.) The first midterm was bad enough that the class average was around 50%, and the second midterm covered only a few weeks' worth of classes before it. My friend and I both took high school calculus before this, and having that experience helped us a bit too.

Comment: Prof. Stankova is extremely enthusiastic about her job. You can really tell that she loves teaching. Her humor definitely made the class more bearable. Her lectures were mostly clear and detailed but she has a habit of skipping over things she assumes everyone knows. Having not taken any Calculus course before, this was especially frustrating but could easily be rectified if you have a good GSI to fill in the few gaps. But don't expect her to slow down and explain everything, even if it's obvious that more than half the class is lost. Her midterms test some more conceptual understanding so make sure you understand above the simple "plug and calculate" knowledge. The good thing is she is pretty fair; the curve for the first midterm was pretty low so she compensated by making the second midterm really straightforward. Overall, an EXCELLENT professor and definitely a major reason I'm continuing on with her in Math 1B.

Comment: Professor Stankova is a really good professor because she cares more about the students understanding the concepts than challenging them with super hard algebra and stuff. She really babies her class a lot and gives nicknames to things so that you understand but when it comes down to tests you have to know your shit and expects you to know what the real theorems and definitions are not just her nicknames for them. oh and don't forget the quotes on tests... they can really bring down a grade. Overall she is a great professor of math 1a.

Comment: Professor Stankova is probably the best professor to take math with at Cal because she's enthusiastic and relatively clear in her lectures. Her exams and assignments are all also pretty straight forward as long as you do the homework properly. Go to every lecture and you'll definitely have a good idea of what to study for the exam. Beware though that the course is curved (not by her design) and some people will have to suffer at the expense of others. Regardless of this curve though, if you do your homework and review the major concepts (with a little practice problems too) before the midterm and final you'll be perfectly fine.

Comment: Assignments: There was no homework in the class, which I personally loved (not because of less work, but it let you relax if you already knew what was going on). ● Enthusiasm: One of the most enthusiastic professors, which is especially hard to pull off in math. Interacts with the class regularly, and stays in a good mood unless you interrupt her while talking or she suspects you're cheating. ● Helpfulness: Really explicit with all of her work and makes sure you understand where every equation and formula comes from. Goes much farther in depth than any high school class, and helps you understand the math on a different level. Her analogies sometimes help and sometimes make the concepts more confusing, but the former occurs more so than the latter ● Exams: Extremely fair exams. She could definitely make the exams much harder than she does, but she wants to test your comprehension of the subject matter instead of pushing you to improvise on the spot. There is a 15 point bonus question on each exam which you can probably scrape out a few points on. ● Recommendation: GO TO LECTURE! Take thorough notes, because they'll help you when studying. Try to get a close seat because she tends to write small.

Comment: Stankova is a good lecturer, she's enthusiastic about the material and even makes up little strange, cute names for certain topics and terms. This helps you stay awake in her lectures and remember the material. Her assignments were long (never graded or collected so it's optional, funding was cut or something) but it was assigned to make sure you master the material. Her exams are killer. She has her own kind of curve where she wants everyone to perform according to that.

Comment: Really enthusiastic teacher. She made lectures bearable and taught pretty well. Homework was not required, just there for if we wanted to do it. Answers for HW were posted before quizzes. Comment: She was a really great teacher. Her teaching style was very conducive to the students naturally learning process. She would explain abstract things very concretely. Make sure you study EVERYTHING on her review sheet. She only tests you on about 60-70% of the stuff so don't worry if you don't get everything down 100%. She LOVES true and false questions and other theory based questions. I loved her lectures, the only downside was that she would always bring up how these socially handicapped group of kids were learning the same stuff we were in like... the 3rd grade. Really made me feel like a sack of shit. But overall, stankova kicks ass.

She really helps you understand the concepts during office hours and the thing about her lectures is that they are organized, she teaches you tricks on how to solve ANY kind of problem :D. Comment: She's not that hard of a professor considering the class was basically Calculus I. But the curve for 16A is absolutely ridiculous because everyone does well on the tests and the fact that she never wants to answer students' questions, really shows how out of touch she is. Comment: Stankova is very enthusiastic and tries to let students understand all the major concepts. However, her homework problems take up a lot of time but don't entirely help, since her exams mostly test problems similar to those demonstrated during lectures. She constantly emphasized that word explanations are necessary on her exams, but I found out that it wasn't true. Comment: Stankova has the most organized lectures I have ever experienced. Her notes come straight from the book but she does a good job presenting the material. She is always reminding the class of useful theorems, techniques, etc. that are employed in single variable Calculus to illustrate how these techniques extend into multivariable calc. Exams are quite manageable.

Comment: Zvezda is a great teacher. She's incredibly engaging in lecture and her examples really helped me understand the concepts she presents. Her assignments can be difficult at times but the GSIs can help if you have a problem. Her first midterm was pretty fair based on the material we covered in class, but the grading was a little harsh.

Comment: Stankova is probably the best math professor I have had at Cal. She is very enthusiastic about the material. Lecture was always filled up. Her homework is not graded and she posts solutions. Also her exams are not that difficult if you put in the effort to know the material. Her final was not cumulative so that helped also.

Comment: Crazy teacher (in a good way). One of the better lecturers in the math department. Assignments were not graded, and solutions were (although not always the best because not from solutions manual) posted after assignments were "due". Midterms felt more like a time crunch than an accurate evaluation of your capabilities, and the final was a quite weird, I feel like my midterm 1 grade should have been much higher and my final grade much lower.

Comment: Stankova is a decent instructor, at best. She is VERY unhelpful outside of class. Her "let the TAs do all of the work" type of attitude is horrific. Moreover, she isn't very approachable, just look at her Math 54 homepage. She wouldn't let kids use the bathroom during finals, that says a lot. She made 10 kids RETAKE the final exam because they forgot their school IDs. Don't take Stankova unless you want to retake the class.

Comment: I had Stankova for 1B and 54. She was great for 1B, and taught you everything you needed to know so you hardly had to read the book. She was not so great for 54, and I imagine it would have been a very difficult class for someone who didn't read every section of the textbook/have a good GSI. Lectures for 1B were extremely helpful, 54 not so much, but she is definitely an awesome professor and is very entertaining. Homework isn't ever due but it's useful for studying. Exams are fair but make sure you're prepared for anything. The 1B final was tough, but the 54 final was pretty easy if you studied a lot. In both classes there were some tricky true/false questions on 2 of the 3 tests.

Comment: Zvezda is an amazing lecturer. She makes the dry material in the book come alive. However, she does have quite a thick Bulgarian accent. Her homework is straight out of the textbook, mostly evens, and a different GSI will post (generally correct) solutions each week the day before the weekly quiz. Homework is not collected and doesn't count as part of your grade, but you still have to do it to prepare for the quiz, which will gauge how well you understood that week's material. Both of her midterms for an 80-minute class consisted of 4 problems and 1 bonus problem. The 3-hour final had 5 regular problems and 1 bonus problem. Since her exams are so short, they are often not comprehensive and really only test you on a fraction of the material covered in class, which can be unfair for those who selectively study. That said, study everything and don't be surprised to reach the end of one of her exams and not have been tested on several key concepts. Her office hours are kind of weird. On Tuesdays, they would be held right after lecture outside of 155 Dwinelle as she sat on a bench, and people would surround her and ask her questions. However, on Thursdays they actually took place in her office before lecture, which might have made more sense. Overall, she is just a very funny person, and a clear explainer of mathematics that I would highly recommend for any math course. Even though this was her first time teaching Math 54, she did a great job and really blew me away.

Comment: She's alright at best. Extremely, extremely annoying person though. She runs her classroom like a dictator, don't know if it has something to do with her heritage. But she specifies that she will not help anyone outside office hours, tells you not to email her for an infinite amount of reasons; not to question her. She will not start the class until she has ensured everyone says good morning to her in Bulgarian, and then will end class 5 minutes late. She's not a bad lecturer, but she often confuses people and moves on without any care or sympathy for people who don't follow. Exams are fair; true/false questions are tricky.

Comment: Math 54 is somewhat of a boring class. Stankova did a pretty good job teaching the material, although sometimes she would teach things not in the book and just confuse everyone. The exams were not too bad.

Comment: Good professor for this course. Very organized and clear in lecture. Exams were not too bad, though the true/false section has a pretty brutal grading scheme so scores were generally pretty low. The curve was fine though. There were 14 quizzes and you got to drop 4 of them so it didn't matter if you missed/completely bombed a few. Her teaching style seems ideal for any lower div courses

Comment: 15% weekly quizzes; and something like 20% each for 2 MT; 45% for final. if final >= MT, replace MT with final score, can apply to both MT which means final can be 85%. Good Prof, good lecturer, friendly during Office hour, no homework collection, give extra knowledge outside of books, she is born to do (olympic) math. hard exams, mean was about 60 for MT; 50 for final. Must mention, if you choose a wrong answer for multiple choice, she deducts your points.

Comment: The Prof: Don't listen to the bad reviews from her math16A. She is one of the best professors I've had...like ever. She trains the US math Olympiad team, and won some intense math competitions as a kid, so she knows how to give really intuitive explanations to everything. I found myself reading the book and wondering why so many of the theorems were of things that seemed obvious after her lectures. Homeworks had a good balance of easy and hard problems. Final was killer though, but I think it got curved very generously. The Class: felt like a mix of all the fun stuff you didn't get to do up to now. Sometimes could be a little scatter-brained, but it's all connected in really interesting ways.
