Comment: He was somewhat helpful in classes. The problem sets were helpful but quite difficult. Midterms were also quite challenging.

Comment: Wilkening is a pretty good professor. He struggles sometimes, but always tries really hard to be helpful and answer questions. Kinda awkward in a cute math geek way, like a baby giraff.

Comment: Prof. Wilkening's exams were some of the most unfair, out-of-place exams I have ever taken in my life. No matter how enthusiastic he was or how helpful he tried to be, no one in that class was the least bit prepared for the midterms and ESPECIALLY the final. I literally thought I had failed that final, though the curve was so big I ended up getting an A-. So, at least he curves exams? Because otherwise everyone would have failed.

Comment: Homework was helpful, especially if you did all of the assignments. Weekly quizzes were curved (lucked out with my gsi) and there were several extra credit opportunities for section. However, exams were nearly impossible and super long. Half of the exams were "no partial credit" which sucked. Yet this caused an amazing curve and made the class not as hard as it seemed.

Comment: As a professor I thought he was very kind and really cared about helping his students succeed. However his exams were very difficult and long, especially the final. The curve was very generous and overall it was an OK class. My GSI was very helpful!

Comment: As a person, he was very kind and obviously cared about the students success - he made sure to add humor to his lectures which made them a bit more bearable. However, his midterms were horrendous. He does add a curve which helps. Both midterms, no one left the class a minute early and as we walked out everyone had the same horrified look on their faces - which was reflected in the class averages. Grading policy is nice.

Comment: Pros: Professor Wilkening was very helpful during office hours and answering questions in class. The homework was a bit tough, but the professor provided a sufficient amount of help, along with other students, in order to fully understand the homework. Cons: The course, in general, was a bit out of it. The textbook did not really have enough examples to help understand the theory that it presented. The professor followed the textbook closely, and at first, did not really provide many examples. I probably should have put in a bit more effort in understanding the basic theory presented. The problem sets seemed a bit detached from the theory, but the exams rested heavily on understanding the theory. A few suggestions for Professor Wilkening would be to (a) provide lots more examples, and (b) make up questions that resemble the theory and exams a bit more. Overall, I think the professor did a great job, but I think a few things can be improved. If possible, I would suggest bringing in a new textbook that has many more examples and questions that link back more closely to what has been discussed throughout the chapter.

Comment: Professor Wilkening is a great lecturer, enthusiastic, and helpful in learning the material! The homework assignments and programming assignments were very reasonable. However, his exams were very difficult. Thankfully there was a reasonable curve.

Comment: A bit of an uneven lecturer but he more than makes up for it in office hours. He's incredibly easy to talk to and his enthusiasm for the subject really comes out during office hours. Book homework was a little tedious but the programming assignments were pretty cool. It helps to have a little bit of programming experience (or at least exposure), but it's not essential. Exams were pretty good, if a little easy. If you plan on going to office hours, Wilkening is the best. Otherwise, he's still pretty great.

Comment: Honestly, I had Wilkening for Math 1B. That sucked, no arguments there. And I was a little hesitant to sign up for 128A when I saw that he was teaching it. But I was pleasantly surprised, shocked really, to see the amount that had changed in Wilkening since I had taken Math 1B as a freshman. Prof. Wilkening was approachable, responded to emails quickly, held office hours (often longer than they were supposed to because he just wanted you to understand). His lectures were a bit abstract and hard to follow, even if you had read up on the material before, but he honestly did his best to communicate his knowledge to you. Homework assignments were pretty difficult, as well as the exams. The projects in Matlab, but were very manageable though, as Wilkening was willing to guide you every step of the way. I had no experience in Matlab prior to this class, but had decent experience in Java and C. To be frank, this course really reignited my interest in Math, and I did better in 128A than in any other upper-div/lower-div Math class.
