Comment: This was a great class and Professor Ratner is a great teacher. Her teaching style is as follows: write a theorem, do a proof, do a problem showing how the theorem can be applied; repeat. Math is easy to understand when Professor Ratner teaches it, everything is well organized and perfectly logical. On top of that, she dispenses 'words of wisdom' to the class, which are both profound and entertaining. "When you want something, get it".

Comment: *Warning* Weeder class. This class will bend your GPA over and beat it till it bleeds out. Ratner has an even grade given distribution, ie. 20% A's, 20% B's, ... 20% F's. No lie. She doesn't curve and her tests are extremely difficult. On the contrary she is an excellent lecturer. Very engaging and hilarious.

Comment: Ratner is the best math professor I have had. She is a cute, old, Russian lady who will make you want to come to lecture and learn integration. This class requires doing a lot of problems and work, but is definitely worth it. Take Ratner!

Comment: The best Math 1B professor ever!. Teaches very well so that you won't have to read the book. Gives hard problem but the level of diffuculty matches her lectures. If you try all her pratice problem, you will become a pro... ace her midterms.

Comment: Professor Ratner is a really engaging and fun professor. Her accent is pretty thick, but she's really enthusiastic about math, and she even got me interested too. The assignments were long and hard, but it helped you prepare for the midterms. The exams were difficult, but very fair and straightforward. Overall I recommend taking math 1b with professor Ratner

Comment: Professor Ratner is a really great teacher. She's enthusiastic and makes math lectures really engaging, even at early hours of the morning. She's also practical, much more focused on application and problem-solving skills than theory and proofs, which was a great relief after my math 1A professor. Homework assignments are generally pretty reasonable. There are usually a couple tricky questions per packet, but there's plenty of time to ask questions in discussion sections and you get 9 days per assignment, so that's usually not a problem. Quizzes are also pretty reasonable so long as you understand the homework. The midterms are definitely a step up from the quizzes and homework. However, they're not impossible. So long as you carefully comb through the midterm review and any other problems who might have struggled on, it's not incredibly difficult to do well. However, the final was a completely different story. I feel like there wasn't a thing I could have done to prepare for that exam that would have helped at all. It was a nightmare

Comment: DO THE PROBLEMS SHE ASSIGNS. As everyone will tell you, the class is not curved. Don't let the two easy midterms fool you, the final is ridiculously difficult. Still a class worth taking because she is an amazing lecturer (and funny too!). Just don't expect to get an A in the class without some serious hard work.

Comment: Ratner is a great lecturer. But the class isn't curved, and the average on the final is close to 50%, and the test is 45% of your grade. Don't take this class with Ratner.

Comment: Really good at what she does, but watch out for hard midterms and an impossible final. Do everything on the review sheets she gives out, especially the really hard ones, because those are the ones she puts on her exams.

Comment: She is an awesome teacher. She has her cute little Russian accent, and she tells jokes in class. SHe is also really good at explaining how to do problems. Her midterms are very easy, but they are graded harshly. Oh and her final is impossible so be sure to spend a lot of time studying for it

Comment: Ratner is hands down the best 1B professor out of the three teaching now (Borcherds and Aganagic are the other two) and probably one of the best math professors at Berkeley. She REALLY knows her stuff, hardly needs to look at her notes during lectures. People say she is tough, but her exams are definitely fair and are not hard if you pay attention in lecture. She is a truly great professor and teaches you everything you need to know. Don't be scared--take her!

Comment: Fantastic lecturer, one of the best I've had at Berkeley. Her accent's fun to listen to, and she has a great sense of humor. You'll never need a book if you go to lecture, because she really demystifies integrals/series/sequences. Quizzes are tricky given the time constraint. Midterms are, meh, fair. But the final is a killer.

Comment: BRILLIANT instructor. DO NOT PASS UP THE CHANCE TO TAKE MATH WITH HER. She changed the way I look at math and gave me a new passion for it. She administers the course with great attention to detail and is very involved with her students. Also she's really fun to listen to when she's lecturing. Math 1B with Ratner still remains my favorite course I've taken at Berkeley.
