Comment: This professor literally talks in a monotone... it haunts me to this day. The class is entirely the memorizing of animal bones and nitty gritty little habits (i.e. is this monkey considered a arboreal locomoter or a terrestrial locomoter? Does it eat gum or fruits? Does it have a lumbar vertebrae or not?). Super dumb and pointless. If you don't care about australopithecines don't take this class. You will seriously regret it.

Comment: Professor: He's apparently pretty prominent in his field, so I bet he'd be cool to talk to in office hours. He was really enthusiastic about his subject and made really cute monkey sounds. Lecture: I skipped more than half and still got an A in the class. Deacon posts all lecture slides AND podcasts online, but honestly, you only have to look at the slides. The only thing you're missing if you skip lecture is the videos within them... they're quite funny sometimes, but not worth sitting through 90 minutes of pretty much straight facts. Quizzes: Weekly quizzes, but Deacon posts a list of around 10 questions a week ahead of time. GSI's pick 1 or 2 out of that list for the quizzes. I was really frustrated at the beginning of the semester about how a lot of the quiz questions didn't seem to be in either of the textbooks... But then I realized that you ABSOLUTELY DO NOT have to ever open the textbooks. You only have to look at the slides to succeed in this class. If you look carefully enough, you can find almost all the quiz answers in the slides. Lab: Stayed for the first 2, then realized everything the labs covered were covered in the lecture slides. FOCUS ON THE LECTURE SLIDES, PEOPLE. Deacon and the GSI's say that you should do the labs in section because they'll help you in the midterm and final, but there's very little to no material exclusive to labs that you can't find in the lecture slides. Exams: Format for both midterm and final was split between true/false, multiple choice, and short answer (as in, very short answer... 2 sentences at most). Exams cover lecture slide material only, nothing from textbooks. You really have to be willing to memorize a lot though... especially all the specific things about primates. Material isn't difficult, it's just that there's a lot to memorize.

Comment: Overall, Anthro 1 is just a memorize, memorize, memorize class. Did I forget to mention that all of the memorization is about why this monkey has this kind of tooth and why this monkey has that kind of tooth? Yep, monkeys monkeys monkeys. If you're good at memorizing a ton of material and then spitting it out on the tests, then this class is for you. And even if you're good at it, be prepared to be studying every week for the weekly quizzes. While Deacon does give you a list of around 8-13 quiz questions a week (you will be quizzed on 1-3 of them I found), most of them can't even be answered based on the lectures/books. A lot of it is googling, hoping to find someone elses quizlet flash cards online, and then hoping that they had the right answer. My GSI was not very helpful, and if I asked her a question, she'd say why didn't I get that from lecture? Because it wasn't in the lecture... Deacon does podcast all of his lectures, and post slides of them the week after they are given. The quizzes are a huge portion of your grade, and if you don't have a helpful GSI to answer your questions ahead of time, your discussion/quiz grade will not be very good.

Comment: Oh man... something about this class. I just could not get myself to go... I still ended up doing relatively okay, considering I lived for a semester as if I never signed up for this class. All I did was go to take the weekly quizzes and midterm/final. Maybe if I didn't listen to all of the podcasts in two days time, at 2x speed, I would've done better... maybe. But still... I could not get myself to go to that class... jeez.

Comment: Deacon makes being in class fun. He shows interesting video and it was helpful that he would provide the slides and the podcast for the class. It is very helpful to do the quizzes and stay during discussion to ask more in depth questions and gain helpful examples. The exams were straight forward yet his short answers some of the GSIs wanted the answers to be specific and contain more terminology.

Comment: Not sure if it's because his voice is a bit monotonous, or because the content's boring, or because lecture was right after lunch, but I just couldn't stay conscious in class. The class wasn't bad, but it just wasn't very interesting to me. The weekly quizzes aren't bad either, but they don't let you make them up if you miss them (even if it's for a legit reason, like a family emergency or doctor's appt.), so make sure to go to section! GSI matters. I didn't go to lecture one week and my GSI got all snarky on me. Kind of killed the class for me. But the tests weren't hard--just make sure you give yourself enough time to study.

Comment: This was my favorite class this semester! Professor Deacon is amazing and funny, showing interesting graphs, statistics, pictures, and best of all, videos! I am literally obsessed with David Attenborough's nature films after watching so many clips in this class. The class moved at a really good pace, covering general animal behavior, monkey/ape/primate behavior, hominid evolution, and modern human culture. Quizzes are posted online beforehand so there is no excuse for not getting 100% on every quiz, tests are easy, and there is no homework! Honestly this class is more like 2-3 units of work, but it's definitely an great GPA booster. I think a lot of people don't like the excessive science in the course, especially the days he spends over an hour on basic biology. However, the title of the course is "Biological Anthropology", and I consider it a science class, not a humanities class. So, don't be surprised when Deacon starts explaining different regions of the brain in extreme detail!

Comment: Quizzes were easy and you could get away with reviewing the questions the day of your section. The midterms and finals however (as I've learned and am learning) require memorization. You could get away with skipping lectures as the audio and slides are posted online, the only thing you miss out on are the videos...but those are worth skipping out on. Professor Deacon is very passionate about the subject so that makes the class better but it's so tempting to just go on your laptop and focus your attention on other things. That being said, if biological anthropology isn't your main area of interest, take another class to fulfill your breadth- one that will actually be interesting. I'm taking this pass/ no pass but wish I had just taken one that sincerely interested me.

Comment: The lectures were fun most of the time, but there are about five or six that are dull because of the straightforward biology info being presented. Deacon is a great professor and you can tell he really likes teaching. He makes even the most boring material sound interesting. His teaching style was so engaging. There is a lot to learn in this course, and the weekly quizzes are a pain, but the questions are not too hard to answer, and they help you keep on top of the material. I found the Human Evolution Coloring Book very useful because it discusses the more important points that Professor Deacon mentions in his lecture slides. I think I only used the book about four times throughout the course, so it's up to you whether you think you need one or not. Most of his test questions and answers are from his lecture slides, but the book does help to clarify confusing points.

Comment: Deacon is a great lecturer and professor, and he is at the forefront of his field. I absolutely loved him, from brief Hitchhiker's Guide jokes to his "romantic" pre-valentine's day lecture (lots of videos of nasty animal sex). However, I absolutely despised this course. To me, the subject matter was dry and boring, and after an hour there was nothing I could do to keep paying attention. Extremely difficult to take as a 1.5 hour course...I have never had this problem with other 1.5 hour courses but...if you're not crazy about apes, monkeys, and fossil apes (ie australopithecines, etc.) do not take this course unless you have to. However, the grading was extremely fair, generous curve, you get what you work for. STUDY THE QUIZZES!!!!!!!!! Seriously, if you know the quizzes really well and just go over the slides, you will get an A. I didn't understand this for the midterm and got a B-, condemning me to a B+ in the class instead of an A. Also, all the stuff you learn in the beginning about DNA and Darwin and stuff is largely useless, there were maybe 2 questions on that stuff on the midterm/final. Fossil apes all the way. Know monkeys/apes/fossil apes backwards and forwards and you'll get an A+. I heard Deacon was extremely approachable in office hours, and very helpful. I didn't love the class, but my friend thought it was the greatest, so...if this stuff sounds interesting to you, go for it. He's a great professor. Beware: extremely different from 3AC!!!!

Comment: Deacon is a pretty good professor in terms of keeping up some of the energy in lecture and he is great in answering questions and connecting them back into the lecture so that tangents don't happen too often. He does try to cover a lot of material in a single lecture, so his pacing will definitely keep you on your toes. Weekly quizzes can be pretty annoying and tedious, but if you keep up with them they come in handy on the long run for exams. Exams are generally straightforward but at times I feel like I could have used some guidance as to what will be on exam. Overall, the class is challenge if you don't give it enough attention.
