Comment: Alani makes this class totally worthwhile! Much less work but much more interesting than most other R&C classes at cal. The readings are straightforward and don't take much time (2-3 hrs per week). She is very easy to talk to and really helpful when it comes to meeting students in office hours. She appreciates open-minded people and participation in class.

Comment: I had my reservations about taking a GWS course, but Alani definitely made it worthwhile. She is great at giving feedback and is super helpful! The class discussions were also very engaging. There is not too much reading, but a good amount of writing for this course. In addition to the almost weekly reading responses (1-2 pages), there is a 3 page first essay, 6 page midterm essay, and a 10 page final essay to write.

ITALIAN 1 (Fall 2011)

Comment: If you do the workbook, then the quizzes will be cake, they are pretty much the exact same questions. She is an awesome teacher that made the course interesting and fun! The speaking exams were always my fear, but honestly she made it very easy and relaxed. She would just begin it and, they pass the reigns to the person being tested (which means you could talk about topics you knew words for).

Comment: She is a great instructor. The readings she assigns are interesting; I have to say this was my favorite class this semester. She leads class discussions extremely well, so time goes by fast! You do have to do the readings because she calls on people during class if you do not participate. She is really helpful and easy to talk to. I recommend taking this class!

Comment: Alani is such a great instructor! She's very passionate about the texts she teaches, and often utilizes a lot of outside sources to contextualize the readings. She assigns a lot of reading, some of which can be a bit complicated, but she does a great job of leading class discussions so that everybody gets what they were supposed to get out of the text. She does tend to put people on the spot by randomly calling on them to ask for their opinion, so make sure you always do the reading and know what's going on in the class. She is also really helpful during her office hours, and is generally easy to get a hold of via email. Great class!

SPANISH 25 (Spring 2015)

Comment: She is a patient, approachable, encouraging instructor--especially for students who were not as comfortable with speaking Spanish. She engages each student at least once per class, so there is plenty of time to practice (yet if you're a bit on the shy side you won't be put in the spotlight). She responds promptly and professionally to emails, but let her know that you're coming in for OH in advance. Her feedback on written work is extremely thorough, and it's obvious that she takes her time reviewing what you write. Perspective: I was in her 8am discussion (not a morning person), and this was my first language class at Cal. The class is doable though (coming from a native speaker). DO THE READINGS ON TIME. Overall the homework/readings are not time consuming, but mentally prepare yourself for the 4 papers you'll write. Would recommend her to future students.
