Comment: All the history professors and high school history teachers in America should take this class. The lectures were superb. After the one on the Russian Revolution, I wanted to stand up and clap. Enthralling, and surprisingly easy to take notes on too. Final was phenomenal too, all questions that were totally answerable, but allowed those who paid attention and dug in to truly shine. Assignments were totally manageable, two essay, good enough prompts. Props to GSI Yotam, guy killed it. Go to his office hours. Talk with him. Leave inspired. Brilliant professor, great class.

Comment: Shagan is absolutely amazing - I am already a history buff, but wow, this guy just reminded me of how little I actually know. He brings Europe to life and really gives a thorough understanding of European history. He is witty and extremely helpful. I actually didn't think that his midterm or final were very difficult - very straightforward and same structure for both with a timeline, identifications, and 1-2 essays. We also had to write 2 essays for the class which were a bit difficult - I felt like my GSI expected a lot from us even though this is a lower div class. Overall, a great experience.

Comment: Grade definitely depends on your GSI. I had a really bad GSI and section since the GSI was really picky about readings! There are a lot of readings and you needed to relate all of them on the midterms and finals. Regret taking this class and taking it for later grade. Material is very boring. Shagan is however a good history lecturer but hated the 2 hour long section and GSI. Suggest not to take this class unless you're really interested in European History.

Comment: Professor Shagan was, without a doubt, my favorite professor this semester. He's very enthusiastic about the material, and explains everything with a passion that I have never seen before. He always composes his lectures with an arc or theme and then ends with a short conclusions. Never a boring day in that class! Great choice for the Historical Studies breadth.

Comment: Professor Shagan has fascinating lectures and are usually centered around a particular theme. It's almost as if he's telling you a story instead of lecturing about European history. The midterm was graciously easy, and the two 5-page papers are of comparable difficulty. Reading is usually very light (50 pages/week), but sometimes you will have to read entire books, such as Mary Shelley's Frankenstein or Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness. There are weekly reading responses, which are generally easy. I highly recommend this class if you need to take care of your history breadth requirement as an L&S student.

Comment: A great professor! He is incredibly passionate and knowledgeable about the material, and every lecture is riveting. Grading is to an extent dependent on the GSI, and there is a moderate amount of reading involved, but it's manageable. I recommend taking this class, expecially with this professor!

Comment: I love his lectures! There's a ton of reading, but all in all a great history class. Midterm is fair and there are only two [rather brief, open-ended] papers. Grading really depends on the GSI.

Comment: Amazing professor. Incredible knowledge of the subject. Lectures are structured around themes and he definitely keeps them interesting. Loved this class. I could listen to him tell me stories all day long. Two papers, a midterm, and a final, nothing too big or difficult. Lots of reading to keep up on and the 2-hour discussion for the class isn't always the best, but if you're looking for a great intro history class this one was all I was hoping for.
