Comment: Best prof I've ever had. Extremely insightful and amazing lecturer. Everything he says is amazing. Elucidates really complicated text (like Blake) really well.

Comment: love this class - you HAVE to take an English class with Goldsmith, seriously one of the most insightful, intelligent, and witty professors at Berkeley. It was hard though b/c there was a lot of reading and he expects a lot from his students, but he is very fair and extremely willing to help!

Comment: One of my favorite professors in Cal. He is super insightful, very interesting, and offers a wide variety of views and interpretations of each novel and story. He may be hard to follow sometimes because the material he covers is so dense and fast, but once you get used to it, it's okay. And I didn't think his essays or exams were too difficult at all--he is very helpful in office hours and will help you develop your essay ideas if you ask.

Comment: Goldsmith is a very clear lecturer. The material was interesting and his thoughts were straightforward - the hardest part of the class was the essays, primarily because we weren't allowed to use any of Goldsmith's ideas presented in lecture. Overall, my GSI was helpful and the essays and final were fairly graded.

Comment: Goldsmith leads a very interesting lecture. He includes many diverse interpretations, occasionally to the point of incredulity, but still fascinating. Doesn't seem to have a whole lot to do with the GSIs, who mainly create the prompts. This is not an easy class by any means, and if you don't like Romantic poetry/literature, this course will suck. Honestly this was one of the hardest (humanities) classes I've taken.

Comment: Gives really interesting lectures on 18th and 19th c. literature. As the comment below said, it's possible to go through the course w/o him knowing you or your writing. But if you go to his OH, he's very helpful. Gave me tons of ideas to write my paper on. Not to mention he's super nice w/ a sense of humor! It's too bad I won't be able to take his Bible as Lit class in the spring.

Comment: Very smart, and genuinely wants to impart his knowledge to you. The only problem is that there is no real time to get to know him, rather, you must get to know your GSI. You could go the whole class without him ever reading your work or talking to you, but that isn't his (or your) fault. Suggest going to office hours to get the most out of this professor. Assigns a TON of reading, even considering the class.

Comment: A wonderful, delightful professor. If you are blessed to take the class with him, go for it! It was a delight to listen to his lectures in the morning. However, the assignments are tough and the TAs grade very harshly so be aware! Get the essays done in advance and get their feedback

Comment: I love Goldsmith. I have been a Christian for most of my life and have much knowledge of the Bible. However, Goldsmith brings out so much from the Bible that I have never noticed before--he makes very interesting observations about the style and tone and themes of the Bible, and though I may interpret some of the stuff differently, they are insightful observations nonetheless. Furthermore, he is lectures with an amazing enthusiasm and attitude. The essays are a little difficult, but go to office hours and he will help you flesh out an argument.

Comment: Took this as ReligSt C119 but am an English major and this was my first upper division class. Goldsmith is definitely interested in what he's teaching and his lecture style, as a result, is very clear and organized. However, he has a lot to say in each lecture and will use up every minute of class (and go over a little) just to leave you with "food for thought." One of the nicest and most patient professors I've ever had. Readers apparently grade harshly but at the very least, you're supposed to get a different reader for each essay you write + the final. Essay prompts were creative and really let you engage with the text (yeah, you don't make up a prompt yourself! Kind of nice.)
