Comment: mastering physics sucks. midterms were amazingly hard, but since class is curved it's not a problem (just be prepared for an average of 30 with a standard deviation of 25). great lecturer, obvious that the guy knows his stuff and is a genius.

Comment: Insanely hard midterms. However he likes to reuse problems, so look for old ones for examples of what to look for and you'll do fine. Soso at lecturing.

Comment: Good and Enthusiastic professor. He is ALWAYS willing to help students during office hours which is a plus. His exams are longer and more challenging than some of the other professors, but this can work to your advantage if you stay ahead of the curve.

Comment: Charman is a really nice guy. He is lively during lecture and very nice during office hours. The problem is that his lectures to me made little sense. He explains things in very mathy and abstract ways, when there is probably a plain english way to describe it. He, like all physics professors will try to derive everything, which is useless for physics 8. Despite this you can still get a good grade in the class by doing many problems. His tests are not easy. They go like this. 5 parts to a question. 3 parts are pretty easy. There are your points. The fourth, kind of hard if you didn't practice problems. The fifth, very difficult. If you can manage to get a good amount of partial credit for the last two parts of the problem, you're in a good place. The only way to do this however is to expose yourself to many different types of questions. Taking Charman will work for you if you're willing to put some extra work in that your peers will inevitably fail to do. His exams set a real nice and honest curve, which is a good thing

Comment: Go to lectures. Charman explains the material well and is very open for questions and is very patient. MasteringPhysics is a pain, but you'll have to do it for any physics class. Great experience overall. Fair tests with very generous curves. Definitely take it with Charman!

Comment: don't take 8a with charman--his exams are almost impossible given the so-called "teaching" he does in class which mainly include derivations and demos that do not work. this class was almost 100% self taught.

Comment: The homework assignments are hard, and the exams are also really hard. I think it's because Charman isn't used to teaching 8A. He usually teaches 7A (which is for physics majors and engineers, and involves a lot more calculus). So he doesn't understand that the people who take 8A are usually bio or architecture majors, and that many of us have little to no previous physics knowledge. So basically, don't take 8A from Charman unless you have at least a year or two of high school physics.

Comment: Very intelligent teacher. Sometime he gets too excited in class and talks very fast etc. His tests are a little on the difficult end, but I would simply say this is a fairly challenging class. Read the book and DO PRACTICE PROBLEMS!! He takes one problem from homeworks and one problem from review midterms to put on the test, which is pretty generous.

Comment: This class is without a doubt the most time-consuming and difficult that I have taken here at Cal. The homeworks are unbelievably lengthy and difficult (normally about 10 required multi-part questions and taking upwards of 20 hours per week) and Charman introduces some notation that is beyond the scope of the class (covariance and contravariance). That being said I learned so much from Prof Charman that I can't honestly be upset with him. He is so passionate about Physics that you get the feeling that the reason he assigned so many problems was because he thought they were all interesting and couldn't choose between them. He has a ton of office hours and even teaches section every other weeks as well. The content covered is pretty cool and you get to solve some pretty interesting mechanics problems. Tests were easier than the homework but extremely long so averages were still under 50%. He gives you opportunity for extra credit with "optional enrichment project" although I'm not sure how much it actually helps. If you are going to take the course from Charman I recommend not taking it with 111 lab as I don't see how you would have time for both.

Comment: Aright so this class is ridiculously time consuming. Of my last semester's 13 units, this class took up about 60% of my time. Problem sets take about a minimum of 20 to 25 hrs to complete (and working with others is pretty much a must). But all of this was for a guy that is average at physics. But, Charman pretty much devotes his time to this class. He loves physics. His homework solutions are 30 pages and are so extensive in that they include every possible way to solve the problems and all theoretical approaches to the problem. He has such a sound knowledge of the material that it's intimidating to ask him questions about it. Also, he taught discussion sections every other week and what other professor does that?!? His exams were definitely pretty hard, but seeing as his problem sets were ridiculous, that's understandable. Averages usually never exceeded 50 %. And the mathematics involved in this class is pretty high level math. Which is why most people take this their senior year second semester. If you put the time this class takes and are enthusiastic about the material, you'll learn so much and probably get a fine grade (he curves the class pretty generously). Good Luck!!

Comment: He was one of the most passionate professors I've learned from. Horribly hard homeworks that destroys brain cells, but then if you e-mail him about how hard they are, he would drop hints and even e-mail back you to make sure you understood the hints. Tests were easy COMPARED TO homeworks, but then homeworks were nightmarishly hard so... Anyway, learnd a whole lot of materials, made me appreciate classical mechanics, e.t.c. All the good stuff if you put in the work.

Comment: He is one of the best professors I have had at Berkeley. He puts so much effort into the class. I am very grateful for all of his efforts. His tests and homework assignments were ridiculously hard, but I learned so much from the class. He was very funny and approachable. Take his class. You will learn so much from him.

Comment: Definitely best class I have taken at Berkeley. Charman really put a lot of efforts in his teaching. The class is very demanding, it requires you have true enthusiasm in the subject. But if you put your effort and follow the pace, you will definitely learn a lot. His problem sets can be very long, but the questions are inspiring. The final is extremely hard, I would say the hardest I have had. Also make sure to do his enrichment activity, because this can boost your score a lot due to very low average of the exams.

Comment: Great instructor for physics 112, but the class is very demanding so you'll need to be somewhat enthusiastic about the subject, which really is interesting. This was my favorite course in the physics dept in 4 years. Homeworks can be (sometimes very) long and challenging, but the problem set is usually quite diverse and interesting. Lectures are very thorough, though sometimes he will cover important points in the blink of an eye. Exams are difficult, especially the final, but Charman's complicated grading system is designed so you will probably get a good grade if you worked hard on the homework. He clearly gave a lot of thought into organizing his lectures, and is open to answering deeper questions about the material. If you do well in the class, I think it's safe to say you've mastered the subject (at the undergrad level and probably a tad more than that).

Comment: The problem sets probably took 30+ hours a week. In many situations, I found myself rushing to finish the homework rather than spending enough time to completely learn and understand what I was doing. A pretty good lecturer, and really nice guy in office hours, but there were many problems with this class. First of all, the GSI's were absolutely terrible, lazy, and disorganized. They gave almost no partial credit on exams even when the professor told them to. Problem set grades were not available at convenient times either. The exams were extremely tedious, expect really low averages. We ended up covering a lot of material that would've been covered in 137B, so expect the pace of his lectures to be fast. I highly recommend not taking his class if you are taking 111, as you will actually have no time to do everything.

Comment: I really liked Charman (affectionately known as Charmander by all) as a professor. We spent a great deal of time in lecture just talking about G.R. concepts and answering questions (fun fact - one of your dimensions of time becomes a dimension of space after crossing an event horizon!). His homeworks are long, but doable if you collaborate with others. Tests are generally more straightforward than homeworks (though very, very long), and are fine if you thouroughly understand the easier homework questions. Plus, he curves the class very well. Overall, a very passionate and engaging professor, who is worth the work of the class.

Comment: Good lecturer overall, but he could use some work making his notation clearer, and I would have preferred he spend more time on the math before jumping into the physics. His exams are relatively straightforward, the problem is that they're very long. Homeworks are hard and the problems he writes are sometimes poorly written/ambiguous in their phrasing, so it's not as clear what we're supposed to do. However, he's helpful in section and office hours and he's a cool guy in general. Be prepared to do the twin paradox about eight times on various homework assignments and exams.
