Comment: Okay, so he likes to draw curves with colored chalk. He not the best lecturer, but not the worst. The book is pretty good, so I would strongly recommend reading that before lecture if you want to understand what is going on. Tests are a bit theoretical. He helps answer questions in office hours.

Comment: Do not take a class with this man. His lectures do not cover anything that is on the homework or on the tests. The tests are BS since he likes to weight the multiple choice rather heavily. Emphasizes theory in Math 53 when even our GSI couldn't explain the theory to us. Avoid at all costs.

Comment: He was, hands down, the best professor I've ever had. He was engaging, loved the topic and went above and beyond the call of duty to stay past office hours, even showing up at my house when I emailed him to answer my questions. He literally stayed up all night with me, past 5 am helping me with concepts I found difficult. Before he left he also gave me his test and solutions. It was great!

Comment: Prof. Teleman presents the information well, but often did not explain enough when people asked questions. The math itself is a very dry topic, as it is basically repeating the same steps over and over again, only with more complexity as the semester progressed. If you can afford to, try taking the course with a different lecturer.

Comment: Teleman is clearly one of the smartest mathematicians in Berkeley but therein lies the problem. He is too smart to teach undergrads. Don't get me wrong, he is a nice guy but it's just too much for him to dumb it down. His accent and poor handwriting doesn't help either. Exams are fair, though -2 points for each incorrect true/false is annoying.

Comment: Teleman is the quintessential math professor. He absolutely loves math and has an incredible breadth of mathematical knowledge, but should definitely not be qualified to lecture to undergrads on a subject as basic as introductory linear algebra. In the lectures I did attend, he would often jump ahead, referencing material that we were not scheduled to learn for another 3 or 4 weeks into the course, leaving everyone in the lecture hall more confused than when they arrived. His exams were fair, however, with true/false (be careful here though, as he penalizes for guessing which can really mess you up), multiple choice, and very simple free-response. The curves for the tests are usually very forgiving as well. Once differential equations starts, your success in the class is almost entirely up to the helpfulness of your GSI. The book provided is very lackluster in explaining theory behind the math for this section of the course, so make sure to spend a lot of time in GSI office hours if you don't want your grade to tank at the end of the course (like mine did). In short, Teleman sucks, but Math 54 isn't a hard subject to self-teach. If you are the kind of person that needs to learn from lectures, wait to take the class with a different professor.

Comment: Sigh... I came into class knowing all of the material taught. I attended lecture for a month, realized I STILL was not following what he was saying / falling asleep too often, and eventually skipped lecture all together. His exams were very fair, if you know the material well you will do well. Get a good GSI -- seek them out if you must and get into their section. Overall, the course packs too much material into one course to teach you all of it well, which is unfortunate because having already known a lot of the stuff, I got a lot out of the course (seeing a lot of the concepts clearly that I can't imagine people going through the course for the first time would understand at all). His way of calculating grades is screwed up though. You cannot afford to screw up on any exam or any of the weekly quizzes, it makes it really hard to get an A if you get below a A- on any one component of the course (hw, Midterms, quizzes, final). Teleman is a hella smart mathematician, too smart to teach a lower div.

Comment: Teleman's lectures were somewhat OK during the Linear Algebra part of the course (although he did infamously spend an entire 80 minute lecture on one irrelevant problem on transformations), but were absolutely dreadful and almost nonsensical during the Differential Equations part. His lectures are incredibly disorganized, and they display his unacceptable lack of preparation. He also sometimes made fun of students for asking questions during lecture (albeit usually the questions asked were pretty dumb). Exams were fair, although the True/False was rough. It is not the worst thing to take Math 54 with him, just don't bother attending lecture.

Comment: First of all, Teleman is not a great lecturer. Half the time, you won't understand what he's saying or read what he wrote. He doesn't answer questions well, so don't expect too much from asking in lectures. However, his exams are very fair. The exam questions are like homework questions, except he gives true/false questions that take a big toll when you get them wrong (better to leave them blank). He went through heat and wave equations in only a week, but he made that question on the final extra credit to make it fair. Homework assignments are regularly given and mostly easy. I suggest studying with the book and learning in discussions.

Comment: His lectures are hard to deal with because it really hard to understand what he's saying, though I'm sure if I had gone to one of his office hours, I could learn that he might be a lot more helpful then. A lot of the grade was more based on the GSI because they are the ones that end up teaching you what you need to know for the course.

Comment: Extremely poor lectures. I stopped after midterm 2. I had taken a linear algebra course in high school, so I survived off of that and the linear algebra textbook. Differential equations is absolutely killer, and the textbook isn't very good. Make the effort to write up cheat sheets on how to solve different types of differential equations. The midterms and finals were quite doable. However, this meant that the curve was extremely tight and small mistakes could bring an A down to a B+ (my case). Time consuming homeworks. WHICH GSI YOU GET IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. I had a really bad GSI (Raymond Christopher) who was bad at lecturing and also gave us inordinately difficult quizzes. AGAIN, GET A GOOD GSI!

Comment: Lectures were extremely confusing and hard to follow. I stopped going after the first week. For linear algebra, the textbook is great and you can learn everything easily by reading and then practice with the homework assignments. Quizzes every week were different by GSI- mine were pretty hard which prepared me well for the exams. The textbook for differential equations sucks so make sure you don't skip section or homework because the majority of the final is on it. Exams were fair and always very similar to past exams, sometimes even with the exact same questions.

Comment: Really hard to understand in lecture; you have to read the book very carefully and even try a few problems beforehand to understand what he's saying. If you can do that though, you'll see that he actually has a lot of insight about the material (though this often makes things more complicated than they need to be). Exams were pretty straightforward, which meant small mistakes could bring you down a lot. There's also T/F with a guessing penalty which sucks because one wrong answer can lower your grade a lot. DiffEq also gets really complicated toward the end, so brace yourself and be sure not to fall behind. Just make sure you get a GSI who can explain things well and has hard quizzes so you'll be prepared for the midterm/final. Here's what I know about them: Per Stinchcombe: AMAZING, GET HIM Xin Jin: meh. a little to understand sometimes but if you can you'll be able to ace the tests Qingchun Ren: avoid, impossible to understand and has trouble understanding students questions. Comment: He's definitely an awesome professor. Yes, he talks about mathematics in an entirely different way that we can hardly understand him. Comment: Teleman is very difficult to understand. He uses odd words like "interesting" and "flavor" to describe mathematical concepts. Lectures were pointless to attend and I often left more confused than I began. Tests are manageable. There are T/F, multiple choice, and free response questions. In my opinion the material in the course is not that difficult so I did not suffer greatly from missing lectures, but if you can get a different professor, do so.

Comment: Despite the many bad reviews Teleman turned out to be a great professor. He really wants students to do well and gives all the necessary tools to do so. His hw assignments gave a good understanding of the material without an excessive amount of problems. His tests were definitely tricky but many people claimed his test problems came out of nowhere but honestly before every test and midterm he gave a practice test with the exact same format and types of question. He gave a ton of partial credit, if you had an idea of how to do the problem you could usually get most of the points even if you don't come close to computing it. I agree he's not the best lecturer, but if you ask questions he will stop to actually answer them. Also there is a true and false guess penalty which scared me at first but it did not end up being that bad because he uses all true in false from his practice and past exams and weekly not-graded quizzes on bspace. So read the book, do the bspace quizzes, and practice tests and make sure you understand (not memorize) the answers and you'll do great. I would definitely recommend Teleman .He has clearly tried to improve his teaching since past years, honestly people were complaining about him when they never even went to lecture or used any of the resources he offered. Also he is very friendly and if you go to his office hours he really tries and wants to help students with questions.

Comment: HW assignments are very reasonable. Exams can be tough but are usually fairly predictable. Lectures are HORRIBLE. Although I heard he improved from previous semesters (he used to use PowerPoint!), I learned absolutely nothing in lectures (which are about 1/4 full). Comment: This guy tries. I'll give him that. And he's pretty helpful in office hours (I think). But what pulls him down is the fact that even though he seems to be trying, I can't understand what he's saying. He is a bad lecturer that he had to basically beg us to come to class via bspace. Homework and quizzes are entirely by the gsi so pray for a good one. The midterms are ok since teleman gives you practice midterms which help A LOT. But the final. Oh man. Let's just never ever mention that horrible thing again.

Comment: If you want to get a decent grade at all in this class, DO THE HOMEWORK. Seriously, that's probably the only thing that could save your grade. Not because of the points you received for doing it (which for this semester could have been up to 40% of your grade if I remember right), but because it's the only way to practice and get example problems. Teleman seems like a really smart guy, but he is absolutely terrible at communicating his thoughts. Lectures were literally empty midway through the semester. He just rambles up at the board expecting that you know what he's doing. You can tell he tries, but he really needs to figure out a different system. When almost the entire class fails every test (yes, he does curve it thankfully), there's got to be something wrong. You GSI can help immensely. I had Sarah Brosky, who was great, but would rather talk about theory than go over actual example problems that would help us on the tests. Overall, you will do a lot of self teaching from the text books, and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND KHAN ACADEMY for the linear algebra stuff. Literally everything is on that site. But for differential equations, have fun. Oh, yeah, and good luck!

Comment: Probably one of the worst lecturers. (But then again there aren't many great lecturers in the lower div maths) I had a bad lecturer for 53 but I could stick to coming to lecture for the whole semester, but that is not the case for Teleman. Comment: Despite what the ratings say, Teleman was not a terrible professor for Math 54. Although lectures were hard to understand (I didn't go to a single one after the first midterm), the class was structured well. Homework was reasonable and helpful. Tests got harder towards the end but were fair and curved very generously. Teleman welcomed criticism and dressed nicely (the few times I went to lecture). Comment: Okay, so I don't necessarily think Teleman should be rated in the red. True, he isn't too great of a lecturer, and a lot of the material was self-taught. However, he is truly a brilliant person; he just wasn't able to communicate his thoughts in a way that the rest of us could understand. The class itself was not hard to do well in. I ended up getting an A, which was very surprising. The homework was doable (the Linear Algebra book is disorganized and there aren't many good practice problems, but it explains things fairly well. The Differential Equations book is very wordy and proof heavy in its explanations, but it had good practice problems). The tests were alright. the first one was easy, the second and third fairly difficult, as well as the final. However, Teleman curved very generously and welcomed feedback when we had particularly low distributions. He also dressed very sharply and always came to class with a smile and a heck of a lot of hope, which was nice I suppose. Overall, not a bad class, great material, just be prepared to do a lot of self-teaching.

Comment: Prior to taking this class, I was terrified based upon the previous ratings this professor received. However, my apprehension over the course soon faded. To start, Teleman isn't the greatest lecturer. It is apparent from day one that he is on a different level of thinking than both the class and the GSIs. Because he is so smart it is tough for him to understand what students are struggling with. However, Teleman puts a lot of effort into his teaching and constantly asks for suggestions about how to make lecture more enjoyable. He communicates effectively and always keeps you updated on the class. He is enthusiastic about the class and constantly likes to talk about higher level concepts that are related to the material. There was a lot of homework for this class. Way too much for a lower division math class. There was an assignment for every lecture, which got old really fast. He began reducing the amount of problems as the semester wore on, but still, 3 HW assignments per week was ridiculous. (Although being 40% of our grade was awesome.) There were 3 midterms for the class. I felt as though the exams were very variable in their scope, the first being very easy, the second being much harder, and the third being somewhat of a middle ground. The good news is, one of the midterms is automatically dropped. A second midterm can be dropped if one does well enough on the final. The final was incredibly easy if you prepared for it and Teleman gave the class a list of what questions would be asked on it and dropped a ton of hints in OH and dead week review. Overall if you can teach yourself well enough and are diligent in terms of study you should do fine in this class. Also, Teleman is the best dressed Berkeley professor, jus sayin.

He is a terrible lecturer and dwells too much into theory, never doing examples and flying through his powerpoint slides. Lectures are unintelligible unless you study the material beforehand, which ruins the whole point of going to lectures. The two ways to learn in the class are to either read the book before lecture and review or to read the book while doing the homework. Teleman has a very large ego and on the second midterm, he actually lowered the curve because not many students were showing up to lectures. Avoid this professor at all costs.

Comment: Not only are his lectures indecipherable, but his homeworks are long (sometimes taking over 5 hours during diffeqs), and his midterms have a significant true-false component (because everybody loves guessing penalty). The grade makeup is probably the only not bad thing about the class, as it is pretty lenient: 20% each for midterm 1, midterm 2, homework, in-section quizzes, and final. Tests are pretty fair; free response is very similar to homework problems, although the true/false is pretty tricky and can hurt your grade a lot. I would not suggest this course unless you are good at learning material on your own from a book, are willing to put in the significant extra work on homework, or absolutely need to take it the specific semester that Teleman is the only professor.

Comment: I went to almost every lecture, and I never got anything out of them. Its obvious he knows his stuff but he still makes no sense. After reading the book you then realize what Teleman was TRYING to say. His homework assignments can be pretty lengthy and are 20% of your grade, while the two midterms and the final only weigh 20% each themselves(last 20% was quizzes). However, his exams were pretty fair. If you know your stuff you will do well. Less proof based and more problem-solving based. If you're not good at learning out of a book, avoid him. But if you are, you will certainly be fine. Outside of the professor, I found the course material itself pretty interesting.

Comment: Lectures are useless. He tries really hard but no one can understand him or learn from what he's saying. It's generally a hopeless case. It's pretty easy to learn from the Linear Algebra book however. The differential equations book is more cryptic and I had to rely more on my gsi. Overall, the homework is straight forward and the exams are based on the hw.

Comment: Don't underestimate this class, especially with Teleman as the professor. Come to class having read the material, and if at all possible, having done the homework. Lectures will not teach you the material, but will reinforce it and add some more theoretical basis to it. Homework ranges from easy to excruciatingly difficult, the latter moreso at the end. Lectures demand complete attention and a swift note-taking hand. Lean on your GSI, and go to lecture to be taught the heavy-lifting of the theory. Also, Teleman is quite a character, and occasionally funny.

Comment: Teleman enjoys teaching himself. His writing on the blackboard was unintelligible, small, messy. His writing using the projector was quick, and though readable, hard to follow at the pace that he speeds through his own notes. He uses powerpoint, which does not work, as he speeds through them, and it's somewhat cluttered; these were a help if followed closely, with pre-knowledge of what is going on... but why bother: don't. He uses strange grammar and uses too many words to explain things-never mind the accent. Lectures were therefore useless. By the 1st midterm, half of class empty. Class was really empty afterwards. He got "mad" at us. Assignments not too helpful for his tests. I was surprised his "study guide" for the final helped. lambda. lambda!

The textbook for the differential equations half of this course is terrible and just as confusing. On the plus side, he gave students a chance to vote on teaching methods (and for some reason the majority voted to have him use PowerPoint slides, which unfortunately led to wordy notes that hardly anyone can keep up with). Also, he truly has a fabulous eye for fashion.

He makes easy things much more complicated (I figured that out when he taught something I already knew before). He hates his students because they don't go to his lectures, and his students hate him because of harsh curves. Prepare to self-learn your way from the book. Comment: Professor has a heavy accent that is hard to hear, but that's not the main concern. Main concern: the way he goes about presenting the material in the class. He is a wonderful professor in terms of trying to help students learn, but he's really awkward in trying to explain concepts. He assumes that you understand many things when you go to either lecture or Office Hours (which in all defeats the purpose). He makes concepts that could be easily explained very convoluted. He "presents" in the form of lecture slides (100+ words per slide). Tends to focus his tests on T/F questions. Penalizes you for incorrect T/F Questions. If you must take his class, please go to Study groups after his lecture or at least go to Sections. The GSIs have a way better explanation.

Comment: Do not take this professor. Avoid him at all costs. If you do decide to take him, prepare to self-study out of the book (or hope that you have a good GSI). Teleman has a slight accent which can make him hard to understand at first, but it shouldn't be that hard to adapt your ears. However, once you can actually understand what he's saying, you realize that the problem isn't his accent. He cannot teach if his life depended on it. Lectures are absolutely worthless, and probably around 25% of the class shows up on any given day. Punishes the class with harsh curves because of low attendance, but can't seem to understand that poor attendance is a reflection on his horrendous teaching abilities. Half of the midterms are True/False questions, which seems okay at first except the questions are designed to trick you. Along with point penalty against wrong answers, missing a few problems on the True/False can destroy your grade, even if you can solve all the other open-ended problems. Tests also contain ridiculous arithmetic that does not reflect your understanding of the material, but whether or not you can perform long-winded calculations that take up all your time. Teleman has consistently received dismally low ratings on multiple websites (ninjacourses, ratemyprofessor, etc.). With all the budget cuts going on, I cannot understand why he is still teaching. He clearly knows math but cannot impart that knowledge onto others. He belongs in research, not a classroom.

He clearly does know what he's talking about, but his lectures present the topics in a convoluted manner and he often seems unprepared (he does make powerpoint presentations, but the examples he does are made up on the spot and usually yield ugly results). Comment: Rating was for the content of the course. Teleman is not exactly a good lecturer. Could be funny sometimes, but that was pretty rare. I don't think I got much from him as a teacher. However, the exams were fair and had decent curves. They *were* harder than the homework problems, but well, it's an exam. Homework was standard fare: just a bunch of problems graded on completion that were sometimes annoyingly long. Office hours were okay...I wouldn't count on them to teach you the material, though. The linear algebra book by David Lay is excellent, and you could probably learn a lot just by reading it. Make sure you have your definitions down. If you don't understand those, you're screwed. I don't think that memorization is an option for this portion of the course, but I suppose you could pull it off if you're hardcore enough. True/False questions are your friends. However, the diffeq book (Nagle, Saff, Snider) was quite possibly the most disorganized piece of crap I've ever read. How well you understand the diffeq material will probably depend on your GSI, but a complete understanding is definitely not necessary to succeed. You'd just have a bit of memorization on your hands if you choose that route.

Comment: It was a challenge to adapt to this class- the initial material is essentially Math 1B, but this professor's style of lecturing made it difficult to determine what material would be examinable, or considered more important to the class. Lectures were hard to follow, partly because of a teaching style that assumed our minds worked similarly to his, and partly because of disjoint material that situated itself somewhere between pure theory and pure applications. But the professor did seem to grow as an instructor over the course of the semester- after an exam with a particularly bad distribution, he openly invited constructive criticism, and the process went through respectfully. Midterms can be more stressful because there is no final exam, and homework should be taken seriously because it is weighted equally with a midterm (this in fact saved my grade). Past exams are very representative of future exams, and should be studied thoroughly if you are worried.

Comment: Assignments are what you'd expect from a math class. His exams are tough, but I think he grades very generously. I can tell that when he is reading the exams he is looking for the student's understanding of the concepts and their thought processes. There have been times where I'm crunched for time and the calculus is long and tedious, but I knew how to do it. I simply do rough calculations to set things up, stop where it gets tedious, state what I wanted to do with it assuming I got through the boring calculus, and come to a conclusion from that. BAM, nearly full credit on that question. What I really think he needs improvement on is his understanding of how us undergrad non-math majors MISunderstand these concepts. I felt like there were no attempts at trying to view these things from our point of view. He probably never struggled when understanding math, which may explain why he cannot step into our shoes. However, he did provide help and even offered extra if you wanted it. It's just a shame that his help just isn't that helpful.
