Comment: I'm not even an English major; in fact, I'm a intended STEM major. That being said, Paradise Lost was a pain in the ass for me to read, so I was perpetually behind on readings, but I did find that lectures were helping me understand the text a lot better. I started attending lectures before reading the passages, and the reading ended up being a lot less painful. You can tell that Knapp loves his subject and he's the type of guy you'd want to chat with at a cafe on a Sunday afternoon. His final was very reasonable and in fact a lot easier than I'd expected. I highly recommend hi-lighting/ jotting down the page numbers of the passages he references in class, as those will be on the final. Try not to skip lecture, although I didn't find discussion very helpful mainly because it lacked structure. That being said, my GSI was very helpful in improving my writing. I started out with a C+ essay and had jumped one-and-a-half letter grades up by the end of the course. My main recommendation is write and revise and then write and revise again; you will do well if you write multiple drafts. An easier final and participation grade (ie, showing up to section) will compensate for the hard grading on essays (most people receive B's).

Comment: I highly recommend both the class and the professor! We read 11 plays overall, and while we weren't able to go quite as in depth with the amount of plays, Professor Knapp did a great job of lecturing and tying everything together with some great concepts in a limited amount of time. He always came to class with a smile and I really recommend going to office hours! He's really energetic and fun to talk to and extremely helpful. Essays were fun, topic-wise, though they were all graded on a curve, which kind of sucked. In short, however, loved this class (::

Comment: A great class to take, even for a non-major, if you have some experience or writing ability, and some interest in Shakespeare. Knapp is an entertaining lecturer, encourages questions, and is apparently very helpful during his office hours in terms of finding or honing down paper topics. He gives very basic plot-based "pop quizzes" to ensure you've been reading, but otherwise no surprises; in addition, the two papers he assigns are not restricted to provided topics (his prompts are "suggestions only").

Comment: Professor Knapp is awesome. He jokes around and makes studying Shakespeare fun and enjoyable. He has some very insightful things to say and organizes his talks well. Excellent professor, even though I am not a huge Shakespeare fan he made it a great class. The essays are a little vague in what exactly is desired but otherwise they are fine.
