Comment: I'm sooo not a physics person, so I shouldn't have taken this class. But if you are, then this class shouldn't be too bad. There are awesome GSIs to help you out and Speliotopoulos is pretty nice in person, although during lectures he tends to be kind of snarky. Exams are hard.

Comment: Doesn't deserve the low rating he has. He is an amazing lecturer and makes sure to go over plenty of examples in class after clearly explaining the material. However, his exams are quite a bit hard, which is only fair since he expects you to match his enthusiasm for the class by working through the questions in the book in your out-of-class time. I would recommend taking the class with him. Mastering Physics can be a bitch some times though

Comment: After doing a bunch of his past midterms/finals for practice, it definetely feels like his tests are getting a bit easier. The trick to doing well on his exams is making sure you understand what is going on in class, paying attention to hw (concepts on hw repeatedly show up on tests), and doing the wkbook. Usually, for all of his test questions there's a trick for each question you need to figure out in order to solve them. This makes the tests a bit challenging but definetely doable and well accounted for by the curve in the class

Comment: Spelio isn't as bad as people make him out to be, but he definitely isn't the best. His math/proof heavy lectures were at first a bit overwhelming, but you get used to them for a while. His exams were definitely tough, but after you get the tricks down, they aren't too bad. Also, even if you feel like you did terribly, there's the curve to save you. I would avoid him at all costs, and take it in the Spring if you could because at least this year 2012 the spring professors are super easy in comparison. Comment: He's actually an excellent lecturer in general, but his lectures tend to be mostly proofs (unhelpful for exam and homework assignments). His exams are absolutely terrifying -- but the graders are forgiving and give partial credit. Homework is through mastering physics, which really doesn't ease the pain of the course. Comment: Let it be known that if you want to succeed at exams in Spelio's physics 7A, you can't just do problems from the homework or from the text. You need to (1) know your shit (so read the book!!!!), (2) pay attention in section and work hard on the practice exam problems that your GSI will give you, and (3) get the idea out of your head that you can do well on the exam if you do well on homework and understand lecture. His exam problems require you to APPLY what physics you learned to problems completely outside your comfort zone and realm of understanding. Also, lecture with spelio is nearly worthless. He explains basic concepts very cryptically and spends the entire lecture deriving formulas and solving very specific problems, neither of which will be necessary for the exams.

Comment: The example problems he goes over in class are actually very in-depth and very useful. He also draws some pretty sweet diagrams. When I had him, most of his tests were actually strangely easy, with two or three freakishly hard questions. You need to be at least a standard deviation plus above the average to secure an A-, possibly an A, which is very difficult, regardless of the easiness or the difficulty of the test. I wouldn't rely on the curve too much.

Comment: A lot of people might think I'm crazy for rating Spelio with a fairly positive review. The truth is, a large part of taking any course is finding a teacher who is not only good at teaching, but also has fair/easy exams so that we can get that good grade. Spelio does a good job in explaining information clearly. However, be warned that lectures are very much proof-heavy: he will be deriving equations and trying to go into the sort of deeper logic of it all. I mean, this isn't everyone's cup of tea because it doesn't give a direct answer to the question "how do I solve this problem?" However, it is education, just in a different form. Spelio is not a bad lecturer. I think it just comes down to how much you care about derivations and more on the theory of Newtonian Mechanics. From what I remember seeing, Spelio is fairly receptive to students and is willing to explain concepts if you are willing to approach him. If you have a question or need help, do not be afraid to go to Spelio for an answer. Now, just as an overall critique of the course: the thinking process involved in Physics does tend to be a little different from your usual thought processes. You have to consider all the possibilities in terms of how a structure is situated, and you have to refer your experience to real life. There are equations, but unless you know how to apply them, it won't work out. My two cents for you, the reader of this review, is to do many practice problems (such as past exams). That is essentially the sole way to succeed in a course like Physics 7A. With that said, this course has a fairly good curve, but if you are willing to wait (and don't really care much for Physics - a.k.a. it's a pre-req), then you might want to hold off for an easier professor. Good luck and enjoy.

Comment: Physics 7A with Speliotopoulos was a challenging experience primarily due to the fast pacing of the class. The class moves very fast in which the lectures are very in-depth and has very little focus on the more fundamental parts of the topic. Thus, it's a good idea to read ahead in the book. The lectures can get confusing, but he always stop at certain points to ask if there were any questions. The homework is done through Mastering Physics, and some of the problems are very challenging and just happen to be the even numbered ones without solutions in the back of the book (since they change the numeric value and such in the problems, checking the answer before submitting it would have been helpful). Besides that, there is a discussion (non-mandatory in which GSI assigns problems from the workbook and such) and a lab (they are mostly discussions, but there are a few occasional mandatory labs) per week. Things do become hectic due to how fast the class goes through the different topics, and the book is not very helpful; it only covers the very basics, but the homework and the workbook problems require in-depth understanding of the topic. And as for the exams, all the horror stories about them are true. They are extremely challenging and requires deep understanding of the concepts and how to apply them. While the questions are fair in that they are always on material that are covered, it does not help that they are mathematically intensive and very challenging. Thus, if taking this class, be prepared for fast-pacing, challenging tests and homework assignments.

Comment: What a terrible teacher. I'm just going to list off reasons why this class is horrible with him: 1) Spelio's lectures are useless. He spends time going over proofs that very often are more confusing than they are helpful. Moreover, the proofs he completes during are in the book. 2) Spelio's tests are hard. I don't understand why someone who loved physics so much (he went to Berkeley) would want to create tests with 40-70 averages. What's the point of discouraging students like this when you could just write a test with a normal C or B average instead of an F? 3) If you get a bad GSI, tough luck. This class will basically be self-study for you, especially if you didn't take physics C or B in high school. 4) Mastering physics is a pain... even Spelio thinks so. But you still have to use it. 5) The tests are graded VERY arbitrarily. I got 20/20 on a question I had NO IDEA how to do (I just wrote some bs down and got answers that were ridiculous like 40 m/s^2) but 4/20 on a question I knew how to do, but wrote down one incorrect equation. Someone in my section was awarded 10 points (a lot when the standard deviation is 15) just for writing a page on why he was justified in using a shortcut formula because they never told us we couldn't (other people did not get those points back). 6) The GSIs take forever to complete grading and return tests. Seriously. Math 53 tests are equally as long, but the math GSIs take ONE DAY to grade midterms. It takes these GSIs ONE WEEK. What gives? The math 53 final was graded in one day, with course grades out the next. Physics grades still aren't done and it’s been a week already (I guess I should expect it in another week at this rate). I really regret not delaying physics 7A one semester, but instead had to take it with this awful person (he still isn’t a professor, by the way). If you have any choice at all, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH SPELIOTOPOULOS.

Comment: Don't be afraid of Spelio (long name and creepy smile notwithstanding). Despite what anyone says, I can into this class with no previous physics experience and managed to hold my own. Although his exams do have a low average (the second one had a 46 mean. He actually walked into the room saying he had blood on his hands. Though he had cut himself and meant it literally, I thought it was fitting) they are definitely doable, and everyone comes into this class knowing what to expect. Just be sure to go over past exams, they help.

Comment: People diss him for having hard exams, but he's actually a pretty good professor if you listen to his lectures. Unfortunately, his exams are basically two hour trips to hell and back, most of the time, though he has recently started making easier ones since the 25% average midterm last year. The averages on my midterms were 70 and 40, about. Mastering Physics is an absolute bitch. He also has the grossest sense of style ever. Basically, if you know your stuff you'll probably be okay, because there are plenty of practice exams that pretty much represent what kind of questions will be on the midterms/final. If you don't go to lecture and don't read the book, you're screwed.

Comment: This was a difficult class. If you come in with no Physics C experience, you there is a HUGE learning curve and you will be behind for the entire semester. His lectures can be boring, as they are a lot of derivations, tests have difficult problems, especially midterm 2. However, Spelio has made his tests easier over the years, so that will be in your favor. Saying that, if you learn to really master his problems, you will learn a lot. Spelio loves physics, and well, if you want to struggle and grapple with hard problems, this is the class. Shout out to Chris Gerig as an awesome GSI.

Comment: Mastering physics homework and labs are very easy, and his lecture consist of either 1. proofs or 2. the occasional demo (one of the cool ones was a momentum CO2 Rocket). However, homework style problems/labs and proofs are not on the exam: instead, he gives questions that tend to require much more work and manipulation in ways that his assignments do not. Comment: If you haven't taken at least AP Physics B in high school, don't take this class. I made the mistake of thinking that having taken a high school-level honors class in physics would be sufficient, and I was pretty much destroyed not just because of how difficult the exams were but also because of the "competition." Most of the rest of the class has taken Physics B or C, and this is all pretty much review to them. So, falling within the average is hard if you're not within that percentage. Also, avoid 8 AM classes. You think you'll be able to wake up in time for them, but as the semester gets harder, you'll definitely find that hard to do.

Comment: Speliotopoulos's lectures are highly complicated and in general unhelpful because he spends the majority of the time doing calculus-intensive derivations (you do not need to know any derivations for homework or exams) and solving very high-level problems at the expense of teaching students an intuitive understanding of physics. Comment: No doubt, this is a tough class and if you're not willing to put the work necessary to understand physics then you'll get the grade you deserve. Exams are somewhat tricky but are fair at the same time if you understand the physics behind each question. Midterms were fair but final was pretty hard. Reading the book helps if you dont go to lecture, but as I said before, you're still not gonna know what was covered and you might end up reading more or less material than was covered, so all in all, go to class haha. GO TO DISCUSSION TOO if you have trouble with the material. The problems covered in discussion definitely help you master the concepts before you go off doing other harder problems (Mastering Physics). Labs were sort of general, and not really useful. This is a tough class no matter where you take it. The amount of ways principles of physics can be applied, you'd be shocked at the types of questions that can be asked on exams. Spelio derives equations throughout class most of the time, so naturally this and compounding the fact that I had 8AM lecture Tuesday and Thursday, I did not attend many lectures. Labs were pretty standard, but mostly boring and a time to have a little fun in class. My GSI was super chill (J. Barnes) and nice and smart so it made lab and discussion enjoyable. GO TO DISCUSSION if you are behind or dont go to lecture. It's really helpful and the GSI's will go over harder problems that incorporate all the principles covered in lecture. GO TO LECTURE too. I know you can read the book and go to discussion, but its useless if you dont know whats covered in lecture and you'll end up either over-studying or understudying the material that might be covered on the midterms. The curve for this class is super generous. I know everyone says theres no curves or w/e, THEY'RE LYING. Depending on your 'definition' of curve, there is one. You can get high 50's (out of 100) and 60's on all the midterms and the final and still get a B in the class, so dont trip out too much. Partial credit is generous, so draw FBD's and equations like theres no tomorrow and you'll get points. It helps to write stuff out even if you have no idea where to go from the start point, because by writing stuff out, things will click. Good Luck in 7A!

Even if he curves the class eventually, that doesn't change the fact that the difficulty of his classes causes a lot of unneeded stress. By stress i mean studying really really hard for a midterm and getting back like a 50 or 60 (those aren't my grades, but the averages of his typical 2nd midterm. I don't want to hear about people saying it provided a good challenge or that he's not lazy with writing tests like Yildiz. There are people in the class that have never taken physics and are struggling and usually not succeeding because his tests are so difficult. Physics 7A should not be this difficult, and there should not be such a huge gap in the difficultly of Yildiz and Spelio.

Comment: His lectures are not very interesting and his exams are difficult (usually, but the first midterm in this particular semester had an average of 78), but I find it instructive to be given difficult problems. I hear that Yildiz, in particular, gives exam questions that are identical to ones he demonstrated in lecture, while you will never find such test-writing laziness from Spelio. If you care about really learning physics, I think that his exams and problem sets will help you get better, but you might have trouble staying awake in class.

You CAN definitely learn this class solely from the book, homework, and discussion without lecture, but I think he definitely likes to cover some of his possible hard test questions in class. If you are good at physics, you'll do fine. If you aren't, its going to take alot more self study to make it through

Comment: Physics 7A is one of those universal lower division requirements for most science and all engineering students that, if taken with a good professor and having prior knowledge in physics, can be an educational and enjoyable experience. Having said that, avoid Dr. Speliotpoulos at all costs. His derivations in class are always very tedious and theory intensive, and he often over-complicates systems for no apparent reason. 50% of the time miss a crucial step in derivations and throw the entire system off, and it would take a student to correct his mistake mid-proof. I had calc based physics in high school, which was the only thing that made this class manageable. And his midterms were impossible. Don't get me wrong, they need to be in a class Physics 7A when many of the students have had calc physics before; however, his exam questions were nearly impossible and many students scored well not on their understanding of physics, but based on all the the partial credit they could wrack up by just summing forces and using Free Body Diagrams. All in all, try to take the class with a different professor. I was quite frustrated having understood the material well above average and still on track to receive a B.

Comment: Lectures were always crystal clear. Mastering Physics doesn't help that much since his test questions are a bit tricky--he basically gives you Physics 7A problems that don't require calculus

Comment: Labs were a lot better than 8A. Spelio is very enthusiastic and a good lecturer. Go to his office hours.

Comment: I had Spelio for 8A, and I must say I enjoyed 8B a lot more. The content was much more interesting, and I thought his exams were really fair. I've never taken physics before coming to Cal, so I had to work a lot harder than most students. I earned my A by doing a bunch of problems from the textbook, Mastering Physics (yes, you should actually do them), past exams, and Giancoli's textbook (which I highly recommend reading instead of Wolfon). My GSI was kind of a tough grader during labs, but they were relatively easy. Quizzes are standardized across all sections. Spelio was very open to questions during lecture and OHs. Overall, I'm glad I took 8B with Spelio and I'm even more happy that physics is over!

Comment: I had Spelio for 8A as well and I must say this class was significantly harder. Spelio seemed less enthusiastic about this class and spent so much time in the beginning that we didn't get to a lot of material at the end and rushed through whatever we could get. MasteringPhysics was a pain. Most students just google answers so I don't even know why we still use it. The exams, in my opinion, were challenging, but students seemed to do well on most of them. The nice thing is that as long as you take all exams, you're going to pass the class since 25% get As, 40% get Bs, and 35% get Cs. The quizzes vary from GSI to GSI, but they're all adjusted at the end so that's nice. Labs are graded for effort which is also nice. Overall, my experience in 8B was pretty bad. I didn't learn that much and found lecture to be very confusing. Spelio's lack of enthusiasm and concern didn't help make the already difficult material any easier.

Comment: Speliotopoulos was well known for his ridiculously difficult exams in the 7 series and he knew it. In his 8B class, he would always say to us, "I know who I'm teaching"...or "I won't bore you guys with this..." and kind of made us seem like we were stupid but that was okay to me because he made the tests relatively fair. I personally thought his lectures were really clear and helpful. Mastering physics was hard as usual and there are always 3-4 questions on it that you won't be able to find online. Overall, I would recommend this instructor for 8B!

Comment: Spelio is an interesting guy. He really tries hard to get you to learn, and the lectures are JUST useful enough where you feel guilty about skipping, but not useful enough to actually go. His exams can be tricky at times but if you work on mastering physics diligently and have a decent GSI it's not a horrible class. First midterm covers electricity and magnetism and can be very tricky. Second midterm covers optics and is more straightforward. The final is mostly modern physics (everything but nuclear physics) and is not too bad. Though what is really frustrating is relativity.
