Comment: Exams were WAY too easy, which ended up making the grade based on minor mistakes or true/false questions. For reference, the mean score of the midterms and finals were 90 and 84 out of 100. The GSI, Auyon, was amazing though. He was extremely helpful during office hours!

Comment: Homework and midterm are doable with the help of friends and GSI (assuming the GSI is good). Watch out for her final. Most hardest exam ever and a f*** you kind of exam

Comment: Hochbaum wasn't a bad lecturer, but she left a lot of the class structure to Tianhu, the GSI, who was absolutely terrible. I enjoyed the material covered in class, but the assignment instructions were often unclear. The exams were filled with confusing grammar mistakes and it was obvious that the test hadn't been proofread before given to the students. I feel like a lot of this isn't necessarily because of Prof. Hochbaum and the class could've been much better with a different GSI.

Comment: AVOID this class (or the Prof). Homework assignments were from the textbook, which only loosely related to what's taught in class. Term project was two trick problems that were adapted from programming problems found online. Extremely badly organized in that a lot of the materials covered in great rigor in lectures didn't end up being included in the exam. Prof has very thick accent, which made it really hard to follow what she's trying to say.. reiterated the same point over and over again as well. she never indicated what she thought was important or specified what she expected, and her approaches to problems differed from the required textbook and also contradicted with what the GSI emphasized.. The most ridiculous thing was that, 30 MIN BEFORE the FINAL would be OVER (no kidding), they made clarifications to 2 of the problems on the exam and told us that "if you don't know how to fill in those blanks, just write down what you know about a min cut (an IEOR concept)" Then people just literally laughed at such ridiculousness... You would too if you were there

Comment: pretty easy class, short project. Hochbaum is not a great professor, doesn't allow laptops in class, hard to understand, etc...

Comment: This class is pretty useful in covering a lot of common problems that IEOR deals with. However, the pace is a little slow. Especially if you take it concurrently with 162, prepare to do A LOT of linear programming formulation. The midterm was was nothing surprising, pretty close to what we did in class.
