Comment: Monteiro is a boss. Not only does he know this material front and back (he did, in fact, write the text), he's actually excited about it! He has all sorts of stories that he throws in to lecture to help solidify the material and make it more "real world" in a non-construction way. My only complaint is that I think he should be given more lecture time for all the material we cover in this course. There was no time for taking notes. I felt his exams were fair (not easy, but fair). Some people did very well (like 100% kind of thing) but the mean was significantly lower than the highest grade. The final was comprehensive, but it did not cover old material in such great detail that it would have been impossible to prepare for it. The labs were fun (what CivE doesn't want to break steel and concrete?), but the lab reports were pretty time consuming. You don't end up having a total of 14 labs or whatever because many of them require multiple weeks' time (for curing, testing, etc on concrete samples). Speaking of the labs: Cruz Carlos is super rad. Carlos is cool to be in the lab with because, like Monteiro, he really loves the material covered in the class. Both Monteiro and Carlos welcome questions and are very approachable. I did not feel talked down to at all, nor was I ever treated like I was wasting their time.

Comment: Pretty interesting class. The labs were generally fun. Go to lectures because there are some things he says in class that isn't mentioned in the textbooks. Office hours are extremely helpful

Comment: Very enthusiastic and interested in what he teaches. Homework takes a couple hours of thought and reading the textbook - read the textbook! Labs are fun and very relevant to material taught in lectures. Exams are pretty difficult, however, but shouldn't present too much of a problem if you know what to expect. Expect: Steel Alloy Phase Diagram, Moisture Content problems, conceptual Wood questions, Cement types and Concrete Mixes

Comment: Very interesting class! and a great professor as well. He is quite enthusiastic about the material. I definitely recommend him as the professor to take for CE60. His midterms and final are very conceptual and it helps a lot if you attend his lectures.

Comment: Pay attention to what he says in lecture since the powerpoints aren't super useful. Going to lecture is definitely a must. The exams are reasonable if you do well on the homeworks and labs and go to lecture.

Comment: This is a introductory course in civil eng materials which covers concrete as well. A lot of details to be memorized, but Monteiro is very enthusiastic in the lecture. First exam is easy, second is fair, and the final is harder.

Comment: This class is kind of annoying, it requires a lot of pure memorization and Montiero is reluctant to actually give you all of the answers in lecture because otherwise the tests would be way too easy. Not a hard class. Labs are fun playing with concrete.

Comment: This has been the best class I have taken here at Cal. Monteiro is enthusiastic about all of the different materials you cover in the class so it makes learning the different details about it easy to learn. You do need to read the book in order to do well because he usually puts small details that you need to remember on the test. He will answer any question in office hours even up till a few minutes before the midterms. Labs were fun and a lot of the time you could finish up early. Shout out to the GSI's Sean and Kemal who would help out with any questions about the lab reports or homework. Homework could be somewhat challenging, so you had to be careful with what you turned in.

Comment: One of those classes where it's easy to get lost in the details..some concepts are easy, but a lot require extensive memorization in my opinion. Eg: does concrete strength increase or decrease with aggregate size, air entrainment, etc...it can be very easy to mix up the facts. The lectures and lab were still quite fun..gotta read the book to do well on the homework I think. Study, study, study!!

Comment: My favorite class at Berkeley. Monteiro is an expert in concrete design who succesfully conveys that expertise through anecdotes and an engaging lecture style. Labs are supervised by Lev, a gentleman from Russia who dresses exclusively in denim. Lev, too, is an expert in concrete design and testing, though is from a more laboratory background whereas Monteiro's experience is with industry. The class provides hands-on applications at every turn, with in-class call-outs for example problem answers, and with weekly labs on steel, timber, and concrete. The people who didn't enjoy it seemed to be architecture majors not realizing what they'd gotten themselves into by attempting a structural engineering minor. Prepare for exams by attending lecture and annotating slideshow printouts from bSpace, and read the book if you're shooting for an A. Only drawback was assignments and lab reports, which were tedious and harshly graded.

Comment: Jolly guy. Good lecturer. Will definitely tell you the low-down in the industry. Very eager to ask questions and start discussion. Sit in the front because he doesn't write very clearly on the board and doesn't use good chalk. Homework is easy. He expects you to read the material; this is reflected on the tests. The labs are pretty fun, a lot of hands on work with cool machines.

Comment: I have to say that professor Monteiro has a good personality. He told some interesting stories during lecture so as to make the lectures interesting. However, his lecture slides is not so well done and organized, and he never updated the new version of lecture slides on his website. Also, he is not very helpful during OHs especially if you are the only student in his office. Instead of telling you the answer directly, he would say "You tell me." or "I expect you know this, go back and read the book." There were one MT and one final which were 90% memorize based. If you want to ace the exams, be sure you memorize every thing!

Comment: Great teacher! Really has the long term professional success in mind for all of his students. Doesn't always answer questions directly. Work load is definitely reasonable (a few hw assgn, reading, project). There is a big project the second half of the semester, so prepare for it. Lectures are interesting but early. Bring coffee.

Comment: Professor Monteiro is totally awesome and tells the best stories....even at 8am in the morning. He tries to involve his classes as much as possible, gives good powerpoint lectures that are all on his website, http://www.ce.berkeley.edu/~paulmont/CE165.htm, and is pretty funny. If you had Monteiro for CE60, you know how good he is and I definitely recommend his class. There are only 5 homework assignments and a final project, one midterm, and one final. The homework assignments are kind of long and detailed, especially if you do a complete job. The final project is a 20+ page report, 10 minute presentation, and big poster (we did 36in x 48in) that can be quite time-consuming, but if you have a good group, you should be fine. Everything for the course is outlined in the beginning and you can check it out at the website posted above.

Comment: CE 198 is student-run. Monteiro is the faculty adviser for Concrete Canoe. If your a Civil Engineer, you should do either 98 or 198 because the competition teams look great on your transcript/resume... That said, faculty advisers have little to do with the DeCals.
