Comment: No exams, almost no assignments, and interesting discussions made this my favorite seminar class. I would recommend it to any engineer.

Comment: No exams, virtually no homework, incredibly easy class and complete push-over professor. I spewed absolute crap into my word processor for two hours for the final paper and got a B+ in the class - presumably the requirement for an A is demonstrating some kind of significant effort. This is a convenient way to get the AC requirement out of the way. That said, the ease of the course is almost insulting, and Azevedo is nowhere near as smart as he thinks he is (which makes dealing with him feel somewhat insulting, too).

Comment: Pretty much an easy A. I got an A for showing up to 3 lectures during my semester. From what I can see when I do show up to lecture is that Azevedo really does care about engineering ethics and helps stimulate everyone's brains about the different ethical engineering topics there is. His entire class is based on participation (which I got through his cyber classes), two short essays he does in the beginning and the end of the semester, and a final paper.

Comment: Easy P/NP class with 5 reflection assignments (around 1 page each) throughout the semester. Final is another short paper too. In terms of releasing stress I find it helpful but a lot of people would just come in and listen + rest for an hour.

Comment: I didn't know what to put for most of these ratings (what exams?), but I think PACS 94 was nice, I guess. To be honest I didn't go to most of the classes (and the only assignments were I think 2 one-page reflection papers and a few online responses). When I did everyone around me was asleep. If you're not interested in meditation, you won't get anything out of this class except for a free unit. Obviously it's an easy pass and you do some fun exercises, but most of it is just listening to someone in the front (sometimes not actually Azevedo, I don't think he showed up that much this year) talk about spiritual stuff for an hour. Again, it can be kind of a drowsy experience if you're not that into it.

Comment: Really not that bad of a class. I think if you read the book (really short reading assignments each week) then you can definitely get something out of this class. The biggest thing I think that I got out of this class was the concept that we need to live in the moment. Live in the now, not the future or the past, because life is short. You'll learn little life lessons like this if you pay attention :D

Comment: This is a really good class to take. There are minimal writing assignments and no exams, and the class only meets once a week. Class typically includes at least half an hour (if not more) of mediation. I would definitely recommend this class; it's great to learn more about the art of meditation.

Comment: No exams, assignments were like "how did you feel while meditating this week" - write a page on line paper. Very chill, easy pass, easy one unit. I think if you took it seriously it might help you relax and actually meditate but this class was always before my midterms and quizzes I either didn't go or just studied (which he says not to do lol). But yeah, pretty chill/cool class. I did try to meditate once or twice but as he says, it takes concentration and practice.

Comment: I've done meditation before taking this class, so some of Azevedo's views and practice were somewhat different from my approach. But all in all, this was an excellent class. Very good for learning to relax and just chill. It would probably have been better if the class wasn't in a 90 degree auditorium.

Comment: Some take this class seriously and attend every week, make a real effort to meditate, and participate. Others sit there laughing and playing games on their iPhones. Azevedo is wonderful; I don't think anyone could dislike this professor. It's a pass/no pass class, and as long as you turn in at least 3 of the 4 short assignments, you pass.

Comment: This class has been my favorite at Cal. Azevedo is a doll and you really can't help leaving the class each week with a refreshened smile on your face. Not many people can lead a meditation class with so many people and make it such a success but Azevedo is for sure one of the few who can. I took the class with a group of my friends and it was a great way to get together each week even with everyone's busy schedules. Great help in managing your other classes too. Take and re-take and re-take as many times as possible guys

Comment: If single unit courses appeal to you, then this is definitely one to look into. As an avid yoga practitioner, I was skeptical of partaking in any sort of organized oral meditation as my relaxation fix, but Azevedo made his class engaging and ultimately very calming (I dozed off many a time, as did others in this 300-some lecture class). Assignments are due every few weeks or so, but they seldom took long enough to get your adrenaline running (and thus ruin your serene state of mind). Granted, you're probably not going to come to class every week, but rap battles are cool and discussing the logistics of meditation was well worth my while. Good vibes in Stanley 105.

Comment: Firstly, Azevedo isn't really the head of this class - it's Sunshine Workman who keeps order. Both her and Americ are inspirational and really provoke you to think about the deeper meaning of leadership and your involvement in creating social change in whatever field you are passionate about. Not exactly "life changing," but definitely life enriching. Go in to Office Hours - Sunshine really knows how to give advice. Bond with your classmates - you meditate in the dark, meet outside of class, and share stories together. Weekly essays/assignments - they allow redos if you don't do well. Final grant proposal - either a social or personal project. Final presentation - short speech in front of the class.

Comment: Grading: no exams, point-based grading (i.e., 15+ = A, 14 = A-, etc.), final was a presentation Instructors: Professor Azevedo is a gifted, sincere speaker. He's very softspoken, but he nonetheless commands the attention of everyone in the room. Anyone can tell how passionate he is about nonviolence and life in general. That being said, he led very few of the class discussions because he believed in and tried to cultivate Bohmian dialogue (i.e., no lectures, only free dialogue between classmates and instructors). I personally didn't like this structure because it led to the more confident students dominating the discussion, but Bohmian dialogue itself is interesting and something you'll learn about from the readings, provided the book list stays the same. There were two readers, one of whom rarely showed up to class because of another commitment. Wendy, the one who *did* show up, always started class with "mindful presence" exercises that were extremely useful and helped me mentally prepare for the three hours ahead (the class meets 3 hours/1 day per week). She tends to be the fairer grader and is very generous with extending due dates if you have a legitimate reason. Assignments: It's easy to fall behind on the readings and PhotoVoice assignments because Azevedo believes grades are a form of institutionalized violence and thus doesn't emphasize grades. Just make sure to stay on top of the assignments, and you're good. One last thing: ATTEND AZEVEDO'S OFFICE HOURS. He is a great listener and knows a lot about a lot. I've had many interesting dialogues with him.

Comment: Great professor who was genuinely interested in the lecture. However, he had some family problems in the middle of the semester and the class was left with guest lecturers and a poorly structured class. The assignments were really easy considering you actually put thought into them, but all of them were given back at the end of the class... so you had no idea if you had to improve or not or how to improve.

Comment: Oh Azevedo, I am disappoint. After hearing rave reviews about his seminars and meditation class, I decided to take PACS164A with him. The course description looked interesting, but the class itself was nothing like it. For roughly half of the classes we had "guest lectures" - presentations that had nothing to do with the "historical overview of nonviolence", as promised. Azevedo does seem passionate about the subject when he lectures, but such lectures are too few and far in between, scattered amongst barely coherent class discussions and the substandard guests lectures. The grading was poorly thought out and poorly executed. The original syllabus assigned 30% of the grade to midterm and final; neither took place, so I have no idea how the final grade was assigned. More frustratingly, not a single piece of graded assignment was returned before the last day of the class. My guess is that much of the grade rested upon the "vision project" that students completed: a field work project of the student's choosing.
