Comment: Fantastic breadth course! The professors are all incredible in their respective fields, and they blend their work together to create a flowing novel of a syllabus that will leave you a much sharper critic of the world around you.

Comment: Prof Campbell is a nice professor. He is reachable and easily to talk to. If you want you can have a more than half hour talk with him after class about topics either correlated or not closely correlated. (You know when you learn philosophy, there is always some random questions run up...) And his class and the material is pretty interesting. You have many chances to ask a question in the calss and he will response you seriously although he is kind of "old" and hard to follow the question a student asked in a class.

Comment: Amazing professor, the lectures are interesting and exciting. two 3-5 page papers each semester, but they're graded easily (at least by my GSI). final exam questions are given in advance

Comment: This was a great class. Very little reading and you didn't really even have to do all of them. Campbell was very entertaining and explained the concepts very well. There were only 2 midterm papers and we had a lot of time to do them.

Comment: John Campbell is the shit. If you have to take a philosophy class, take it with him. I'm a science major and took Phil 3 for breadth. The whole grade was based on two essays and a final. The readings are dense but there aren't too many and he explains them all perfectly in lecture so you don't really need to read it all anyway.

Comment: Professor Campbell is extremely helpful. You could get by in the class without doing the readings because he explains them so well in his lectures. He uses lecture slides but doesn't really read off of them, but he moves on pretty quickly so it's hard to jot down what's on the slides. He is HILARIOUS and uses great examples that make complicated concepts really easy to understand.

Comment: Very engaging professor that has the most charming Scottish accent. He always takes the time to thoroughly answer questions! Philosophy wasn't my cup of tea so I didn't end up taking it for a letter grade, but he raised some interesting points that I still think about from time to time. Not the easiest way to fulfill philosophy breadth but worth the time. I didn't do a single reading and still passed with just lecture webcasts.

Comment: Professor Campbell was very funny and charming. The subject matter of the course was often a little confusing, but keeping up with the readings and going to lecture helps. Although discussion for this class wasn't mandatory, I found that every time I went my understanding improved greatly. The papers and final exams are very straightforward, and Campbell gives you a lot of options to choose from so you can pick something you feel comfortable writing about.

Comment: I loved this class!! The prof is the sweetest guy with an awesome scottish accent. He has a wonderful sense of humor and really shows enthusiasm about the mysteries of the mind. I would read the readings before lecture but they are so difficult that I found it smarter to go to lecture and learn it from Campbell before hitting the books if I needed clarification. Campbell does an awesome job of explaining the complex theories and thought experiments. Grade is based on two papers and the final - your section can affect your overall grade in borderline situations (my case). Unless you go to Campbell's office hours, your GSI will really make or break your experience of this course though. I had Murray and I highly recommend him as a GSI. He's willing to look over drafts and meet at times more convenient for you - essential to understanding how the essays are graded and what the GSIs are looking for. Would definitely recommend this class, though it is not an easy A, it is worth the effort.

Comment: I am an engineering student. Philosophy isn't the normal course that I would take. Campbell clearly loved teaching the course, and when students challenged him or asked questions, he was able to answer them in a quick adequate manner. He makes jokes and has a great accent. The lectures are very enjoyable as well as great material they go over. Very interesting thought experiments. The final is easy. he give you 12 possible questions for the final, of which 6 will be on the final of those 6, you only have to answer 3

Comment: Enthusiastic lecturer. Sounds better in a Scottish accent anyway :) assignments include two essays and the final. The two papers are graded pretty thoroughly so make sure you understand the concepts and are clear and concise in your arguments. Reading can be difficult but Campbell does a great job of explaining.

Comment: Topic wasn't interesting to me, but that aside, the professor's really great. Might have trouble sometime keeping attention (but not sure whether professor's fault or my disinterest). Assignments were fair, final questions were fair. Grading seems fine, and overall a worthwhile peak into what the philosophical side of language is.
