Comment: Maharbiz is a great professor. You'll definitely find yourself wanting to go to lectures just because he makes them so easy to attend and pay attention to. Don't worry about the exams--that's why there's a curve. The thing with Maharbiz is you really have to work to get an A, you can't just coast along and rely on understanding of basic concepts and basic calculus. You're going to need to breathe this stuff, and even that might not be enough. But if you're in engineering and you expect a 4.0, you need to stop being so obsessive and calm down. This course is fine, you'll be fine, everything's fine.

Comment: Very good professor. Though you could learn everything by yourself, his lectures were actually very interesting. Very helpful in the class. HWs were easy. Tests were fair, not too bad. Labs usually took less than 3 hours. The final proj was fun!

Comment: I like this course because I feel that professor care about our knowledge. Maharbiz always explain material before asking it (unlike some other EE courses). It always clear what to read if you get stuck (Textbook!). Homeworks are easy - couple hours per week. Labs are kind of messy because they changed labs, and even GSI did not know what would have be in the next lab. Tests are little tricky, but doable. Generally I studied a lot without extra stress.

Comment: I really liked Maharbiz, he seems like someone I could be friends with. Unfortunately, I can be a somewhat self-absorbed and apathetic individual, something Michel seems to share at times when it comes to this class. Don't get me wrong, he cares about his students, but doesn't really bother much with catering to their needs. The biggest example was probably that you couldn't enroll in labs on telebears, as it said he'd take care of it in lecture. But in lecture the first day, he ended up just saying, yeah, sorry, lab enrollment is first come, first serve so show up at the lab you want. That caused quite a bit of stress. He presents material pretty well in lecture, I found the topics fairly easy to understand. Assignments weren't very helpful though. A lot of narrow, tedious problems that consumed a lot of time, and ended up being very different from what was on the exams. And speaking of the exams, they varied widely in difficulty, the first was ridiculously difficult, with tons of trick questions unlike anything we'd covered. The second was very straightforward, and the final was somewhere in the middle. Be prepared for anything I guess. Labs, and the project consumed tons of time, both for prep work, and during actual lab time. My partner did most of the design portion, then I did all of the construction and testing, which ended up being a good 20 hours from each of us, so be prepared to work that out as well. So yeah, he's an alright guy, but if you want to do well, you might need to take a page out of his book and look out for yourself. And speaking of his book, he requires a textbook he wrote, which costs over $100. Yep.

Comment: Well idk if this help but… I found this class okay, I never bothered to go to lecture (only on the first day) and relied on selfstudy. Just go through his slides and examples on textbook and make sure u understand the material like all the methods to solve the problems. Labs are annoying and especially frustrating during the actual lab period. Make sure u grab a responsible lab partner. (mine was an ah and I did EVERYTHING the whole semester) Just know the rules and u ll be fine. I am a non EECS major and ended up an A.

Comment: Extremely poorly organized class. I'm a CS major that thought it would be interesting to learn about hardware. Nope. EE 40 (circuits) is basically just memorizing a series of rules that you apply to solve circuits (e.g. find the voltage or current at a certain part of the circuit). You don't even gain an intuition for anything. I seriously should have listened to the review below that mentions "if you're leaning more towards CS, you will probably hate this class with every fiber of your being." If you're reading this and you're leaning towards CS, but you're "interested in learning about hardware," that the exact same attitude I had when I decided to take EE 40. Huge, huge mistake, and that probably ruined my semester. Don't make that mistake. Other aspects of the class: homeworks are straightforward, except for about 3 of them, which are really hard. Tests are really hard but the curve should work out in the end (tests are curved such that the mean is a B, and 1 standard deviation above is an A). Labs are truly a nightmare. Maharbiz explicitly tells you that the labs cover material not covered in lecture. This means you spend 4 hours on prelabs and then another 3+ hours on really frustrating actual labs. The final project is also killer, that takes 20-30+ hours. If you're a CS major, you should take EE 20. That class actually leads to other classes that are relevant to computer applications (EE 121, audio processing stuff, etc.). The ironic thing is that I got an A in the class, but it was at very high personal/social cost (time wasted). Another ironic thing: because the labs basically tell you what the circuit should look like, I still have no idea how to design a circuit to do something, by myself.

Comment: Terrible professor. If you come into this class liking EE, you will probably like this guy, but if you're leaning more towards CS, you will probably hate this class with every fiber of your being. Since the class is about linear circuits, you mostly just learn a bunch of rules to solve problems. Maharbiz's lectures are a mix of explaining these rules and relating it to the real world. Homeworks are straightforward and only take a few hours. However, the tests are ridiculously difficult, and you don't feel prepared for them. 90% of the 2nd midterm and the final were about topics we barely covered in class or homework (transfer functions, filters). The labs are a nightmare too. Prelabs take a long time, and the labs often take longer than the 3 hour period, so you'll end up having to do them on your own time. The final project also takes a ton of time- way too much for a lower div EE class. In the end, your grade and interest in this class will probably tell you whether to lean towards CS or EE, but if you aren't interested enough to spend an excessive amount of time in this class learning on your own and working meticulously on the labs and project, you will hate this class.

Comment: Maharbiz is a funny dude and his lectures are quite lively. He's really helpful in office hours. He's a bit PG-13 but it's cool because he seems much more like a peer than a professor. Homework is pretty straightforward, but I'm pretty sure he draws up his exams by hand the night before and doesn't really proofread them because they're really messy and hard with occasional typos.

Comment: Maharbiz is really enthusiastic about EE, but his grading scale is insanely difficult - I think it was a C+ average for our class. Labs take a long time, but that is probably to be expected. The EEG project at the end was cool (if you got it working). Sometimes he didn't show up for office hours and other times he was marginally helpful. In summary, if you come into this class and already like EE (and are good at it!!) then Maharbiz will be your best friend. Otherwise, good luck to you.

Comment: I really like this guy as a person and would love to know him outside of this class. But hes kind of horridly apathetic. He NEVER replies to emails. He's always traveling. He always makes it seem like he has better things to do than teach this class. His exams are really unfair because they aren't like the homework or book in any way. I did alright in his class, but I didn't appreciate his attitude as a professor. As a person he's chill, and you learn a lot in the class regardless.

Comment: For the most part, the homework assignments are easy, but they often don't cover the same material as the exams. Be aware that the lab assignments are ahead of the lecture (so you'll be doing stuff you haven't learned about yet). Maharbiz is really enthusiastic about EE and tries to teach everything that will be useful or relevant in a career, but he can get off-topic in his lectures. Also, he doesn't really tell you what will be on the exam which is bad since he covers so much in his enthusiasm. Warning: He can be a jerk if you don't understand a topic and come to him with questions. He even makes fun of students when they ask questions in class.

Comment: I don't know why some people from previous years hate him, but I think he's grown softer over his time here. What was new this past semester was his modules which were 20 minute youtube videos where he actually teaches the material. In lecture he doesn't always teach the material well, but he is very enthusiastic about what he does and very entertaining to watch. I am actually one of the few non-EECS majors who took the course, and I'm glad I did. It was a rewarding experience and I learned a lot of useful skills. His exams and homework are very straightforward and test if you actually understand the material.

Comment: Overall a good class: Lecture- consists of throwing questions at Maharbiz and watching as he works them out. Actually learning course material comes from his Youtube modules or the textbook, both of which were very helpful, but took some time to outside of class to watch/read. Homework- About 6-7 problems a week. Easy enough to complete-- with the catch that it wasn't nearly enough to really prepare for a test. Lab- frustrating because it was both ahead of lecture and under equipped; luckily the GSIs were amazing, and the final project was really fun! Tests- Easy first midterm, difficult second midterm, appalling final (but thankfully it had a generous curve). Maharbiz can be snarky, and kind of inaccessible to students... he's a busy person so he's often unresponsive to students' queries outside of class and posts things like homework/videos/final exam information very late and only after multiple promptings. He's enthusiastic in class, but not an effective lecturer either. BUTBUTBUT, it is my firm belief that he's not a bad person because he bumped me up a grade at the end!!

Comment: First let me clarify: I am not an EE person. I should've taken EE42 (as an L&S CS), but I took this due to schedule conflicts. I generally hate circuits. That being said, Maharbiz is very enthusiastic about his subject. You can tell he loves explaining the material, but at a catch. If nobody's told you yet, he can be quite a jerk sometimes. In a tough love way. His labs are weeks ahead of lecture (so you're wondering what on earth is going on) and generally take up the entire time slot if not more. HW assignments are chosen from the book and normally pretty fair, but they can take some time if you're not comfortable with algebraic manipulations (it's a lot of math). Also gives 'quizzes' in lecture, though they're effort-based. All in all Maharbiz is a good guy that's just tough - don't expect an easy time unless you're comfortable with EE already.

Comment: Not as bad as people say he is. Maharbiz is quite sarcastic and is an unorthodox professor. you won't hear any other teacher swear as much as he does. He is very enthusiastic and cares about students learning as evident by the breaks he takes and asks if we are following him or not. Exams are really not that bad. The first midterm was pretty straightfroward and the second one had one really hard question, which required thinking critically. The final was fair just as he promised it would be. The one complaint would be lab, as it is many weeks ahead of lecture, so the pre-labs at times are extremely difficult. Overall, a pretty chill class. Homeworks were not very hard and the final EEG project was fun. He loves his BJTs.

Comment: I really enjoyed this instructor because of the way he structures his lectures and labs. He often talks about applications of EE40 in industry and that really intrigues me and makes the material all the more meaningful. If you are the kind of person who just wants to take the course for a grade, this may not be it for you. The labs are on material that we have not covered, or may never cover. This forces the students to think on their feet and figure things out. Dealing with uncertainty is something not everyone would like to do, but is necessary in real life. All in all, a stimulating instructor who never just gives things to you. Seek things out for yourself. I wish assignments would be less algebra heavy.

Comment: This guy is absolutely the WORST professor in the EECS department (and most of UC Berkeley). I'd much rather take a class with someone crazy hard like Paul Hilfinger or Dan Garcia because they would actually TEACH you a lot about the course. From day 1, it is very clear that Maharbiz doesn't give a sh*t about the class. He's too busy with his research and watching stupid "adult swim" videos on cartoon network to spend time and create meaningful lecture slides, homework assignments, and even exams. His book is absolutely USELESS. It will confuse you more than help you, and you will have to consult some other online source in order to understand what the heck is going on. The homework assignments are basically "busy work" that involve a lot of algebra and don't really teach you anything about the course or the material you are responsible for. The exams always consist of stupid little "tricks" that you've never seen before, and everyone bombs them. In lecture, Maharbiz doesn't really teach that well. He just shows up, displays a bunch of pictures and says 2 words about them and goes on to the next topic. On top of all of this, this guy is just a plain ***hole. He constantly curses in class, acts mean to students, and enjoys when we have difficulties. Oh yeah, did I mention that the prelabs and labs are on material you won't see for another 2 months later? The lesson to be learned is: DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS WITH MAHARBIZ. I absolutely hate EE now because of this guy, and I'm set on just doing CS.

The labs were sometimes hard since they covered material a week before we did in class (the pre-labs were thus very difficult), but this helped me learn more than just being spoonfed the information. The lab was pretty cool that we actually built an EEG and the tests were somewhat fair in my opinion. Comment: The labs were all redone so that they covered materials that were not seen in class but didn't have enough support to be as helpful as they could of been. Assignments were of varying difficulty but were bad because we didn't get any readers until past halfway into the course so comments on homeworks weren't helpful. First exam literally had an impossible question and the second one was way too math intensive while we didn't have a calculator. Even though these comments may make Maharbiz seem bad, he's a great teacher. He revamped the class and made it more interesting. Our final project was building an EEG and testing it on him. He was extremely chipper and happy which helped make class more exciting since it was at 9 am. He made concepts more applicable by including real life examples. Comment: Maharbiz is smart and energetic, and obviously enjoys his subject matter, but I don't think he enjoys teaching. In class he almost never uses the blackboards, and only goes through slides, explaining concepts qualitatively. He never actually works problems on the board or in his slides, and this completely ridiculous considering how much math is in the course! The concepts are not that hard to understand, but the math is hard to remember without seeing at least a few example problems done right in front of you. Would you take a math class from a professor who never works examples?? I didn't think so. I've heard a lot of people complain about the labs, and it's true that many of them are done about 3 weeks before their material is covered in class. I agree this is badly organized, but I think they would be fine if they were put in their proper place. Oh, and his book (the class textbook) is not very helpful. It covers the standard material just like any textbook but almost none of the chapter problems in the back. So if you want to go study you have no idea if you're doing things right.

Comment: Maharbiz is a slightly-above average lecturer. He tends to go through material extremely fast and then go off on tangents about stuff he likes (his research, industry). That being said, the concepts are pretty simple and straight-forward, probably why he says he bored all the time. Homework is assigned weekly and takes 1-3 hours. The labs were the worst part of this class- the labs were several weeks ahead of lectures and several chapters ahead of the material we were currently going through. Midterms were fair, but each had an impossible question that were designed to throw off the average student. Maharbiz seems extremely helpful and answers questions pretty well
