Comment: Pretty straightforward class. Go to lecture. Assigned readings are not necessary to do well on the exam. This class barely takes any time, except for the two assignments which aren't too hard if u know what you're doing. Requires you to identify pieces that are discussed in lecture .

Comment: This class is completely straightforward if you take the time to really study the different music pieces. I'd recommend this class for sure!

Comment: This was my first music class and I absolutely loved it! Professor Smart is very knowledgeable and is very honest with her own opinions of pieces and composers. She doesn't force you to like everything and gives you space to appreciate music in your own way. Tests are always really fair. Just go to every lecture and she rewards you with the answers to the exams. She's always really helpful in office hours and Piazza. Assignments are nice. Take this class!!!

Comment: Pretty interesting class. Broken up into 3 main periods of music for Fall '12 class: Baroque, Classical, and Modern. Prof. Smart is a decent lecturer, but at times the class could get a bit boring, but that is the nature of older music. I definitely learned a lot about music I traditionally skipped over while on youtube/spotify and it was a good experience. Liked most of the classical and baroque stuff but found the modernist music a bit odd and unusual. Prof. Smart was more than willing to help students understand material in class and OH's and you can tell she is really passionate about music. GSI's were helpful too. Section was a bit of a waste of time but reinforced things learned in lecture. One would think it would be hard to fall asleep in a music class, but in the big Hertz concert hall, it is VERY easy to fall asleep. Some of the music was that dull. People say this class is an easy A, but it is not, especially if you have classes that require more effort (engineering...). The people who have time to commit to the class will get A's and the people who don't get B's. It's that simple. You probably have to TRY to get a C or lower. Almost no work for the 4 units you get. Great deal for the 2, 1-hour lectures and 1 hr discussion per week.

Comment: Professor Smart is passionate about her field but is very indecisive when it comes to explaining what it is a musical piece is expressing. As long as you can back up any assumption you have about a piece of music with some musical technique that sounds plausible you should be okay. Go to lecture, read the listening charts, and listen to the pieces on repeat.

Comment: Professor Smart was clearly enthusiastic about music, although I felt like sometimes she didn't know how to express herself and seemed a bit disorganized with the structure of the course. Nevertheless, the material was interesting enough (I personally like listening to classical music - the modern stuff got way weird way fast though), assignments were easy and exams were straightforward, with study guides given before. Overall, I thought it was a easy A with minimal effort - good intro class, perfect for fulfilling the Arts & Lit breadth.

Comment: This class may seem difficult at first, but I wouldn't recommend taking it P/NP because it ends p being fairly easy, and could easily be a GPA booster.

Comment: Very enthusiastic, very detailed lectures. Detail was helpful in describing the music for the assignments. Descriptions were simple and concise, yet rich enough to entice me. I had no experience whatever in classical music before this.

Comment: A+ with minimal effort. Granted, I have some music theory background (up to level 10 CM if anyone knows what I'm talking about...) so I knew some things about different periods in music before the class. Also my GSI was pretty cool/useful (Nell! <3). I was unconscious for most of lecture (just be awake for the clicker sessions; I think those are graded on whether you press a button). Kind of amazing how easy it is to fall asleep when you have Beethoven's Eroica Symphony blasting from a giant speaker three feet away from you. 2 midterms, 1 essay, 1 "assignment" (do whatever you want pretty much), 1 final. Midterms and final consist of listening section, multiple choice questions, short essays. Gives out study guides before the tests which are pretty useful. As for Smart herself, I guess she was interesting enough when I was awake. (At any rate it was a nice break from my 3 technical classes) In short - easy A if you have music theory/history background and a cool GSI (like Nell!) :D

Comment: Okay so the main problem with this class is that it's called Introduction to Music and this is NOT an introduction to music. It's more of an analysis of the classical, romantic, modernist, etc periods and 80% of the songs you have to listen too/analyze/somehow know what the "message" is are actually painful to listen to. If you're into weird music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6LyYdSQQAQ we actually watched that in lecture) then maybe, just maybe you'll enjoy this. She also talks about their super boring lives AND a lot of art at the time (art history status aka BORING). So like if you have done music before, this is still not an easy A and it's a very painful A to get cause it's so boring (but, the lecture hall has very comfy seats for sleeping so that's always nice). Oh and you can't have laptops in lecture which is the only thing that could have made this class better. So basically, don't take it.

Comment: Easy but really boring class. Most of the assignments/hw comes from your GSI, but there are two assignments that Smart assigns herself. I wouldn't know much about her helpfulness considering I never went to office hours. Her midterms are pretty easy considering she gives you a study guide and you can find the answers on her lecture slides.

Comment: The class was overall a mix, with lots of essays/short writing assignments and listenings. Some of the assignments were really cool, like when we got to do an ethnography of the music department/our own research paper, but there were a lot of difficult/unclear assignments as well. Not too bad though, just a lot of work for a 2-unit class.

Comment: she's really interested in what she talks about, so i wish her class was more organized. she had a really interesting schedule on the syllabus but most or all of those lectures were scratched. assignments consisted of a few "journal"-type entries, a shorter paper, and a longer research paper. she's a good grader.

Comment: Professor Smart is very knowledgeable about opera and she selected a very diverse spread of operas to introduce to us for the semester. Class is sometimes unstructured and we spent much more time on some operas than others. Assignments required time, but her grading is not too difficult, especially if you have some music background. Overall she is an interesting, helpful professor.
