Comment: He's really funny and engaging in lecture. The weekly homework can be difficult so working in groups and finishing it before section is really helpful. The exams are not as difficult as the homework.

Comment: The homework assignments were pretty tough, but don't be too discouraged by them. I didn't do so well on the homework, but I got good grades on both midterms. Michael is pretty enthusiastic about the material, so this was a good class.

Comment: Homeworks are pretty tough. Give yourself ample time to understand the material, because 50% of the grade is dependent on them.

Comment: The first few assignments were very hard, and went beyond the scope of the class, I believe. Later on, Michael (yes, that is his last name) adjusted the difficulty to the point of being almost too easy. Exams I found were just right. Michael tends to go on tangents during lectures, and if he's talking about subject matter you're interested in, this can be a treat. Otherwise, it tends to bog down the lecture.

Comment: Super enthusiastic and is really clear in explaining concepts. Defiantly one of my favorite professors on campus. The homeworks were a bit hard at times, but going to his office hours helps tremendously. I have absolutely loved this class and professor.

Comment: Michael is an excellent professor – he grabs your attention in class and explains concepts very well, and he's always open to students dropping by during office hours. Did I mention he was great to look at, too? The only downside is that there's a lot of homework. There are weekly "micro-essays" (350 words) and blog comments, and a wikipedia project along the way. I found this fine because I'd rather do short essays than long papers. Michael's grading structures means you're always on the ball with readings, since they're the basis for blog posts/comments and his weekly 10-min quizzes. If you're interested in sociolinguistics, Michael will teach you everything you need to know, and you'll be fascinated with the class. If you're not into that area, then avoid this course.
