Comment: She really loves the topic and you can tell from her lectures. But her lectures consist mainly of her talking and discussing about the matter more than anything. Your GSI matters. And discussions are super helpful. Felt like I learned more in discussion than anything. Lectures are more for concepts and discussions were more like labs and practices. This class has a heavy workload with the homeworks being super long of about 5 pages each. The homeworks also count a lot towards your grade and so you can't really turn in something you did overnight. Readings were also heavy. Overall I like the material and content, but didn't appreciate the amount of time needed for the class. Also, you have to work in groups for homework so you have to meet up with them at least once a week haha.

Comment: Sweester was a very boring lecturer. She means well but the way she explains things just put me to sleep every single time I went to lecture; so I stopped going to lecture all together. But Oana was my GSI and she knew so much and was so great that I aced the class anyway and loved the material. Without her though I would have seriously considered dropping the class even though the material is interesting; its just not presented that was during lecture. Hopefully you have a good GSI who makes it worthwhile.

Comment: Prof Sweetser is nice and fun to talk to, but not the best teacher. The material for this class is great and very relevant for anyone interested in psychology/the mind with an emphasis on language. However, class is just about the least exciting part. You can choose between reading the books and getting great info without the boredom of going to class or going to class where you get a summary of the important stuff so you don't need to read the books, but face the danger of falling asleep. Most people opted for the first option until pop quizzes were introduced, which sucked. If you're really interested in this stuff, it's almost worth it just to read the books and not bother with taking the class. Then if you ever need an easy A, you know where to go!

Comment: This course is VERY conceptual. Half your grade is based on HW graded on a "✓-,✓, ✓+" system, and the other half is based on a 20-page paper with no given prompt--but the class isn't weighted at all (?). The paper is an analysis of any metaphor of any kind--there literally weren't any guidelines or instructions, other than it should be close to 20 pages. Prof speaks fast and never puts lecture notes up online, so type fast and listen up as best you can. That being said, material was interesting--especially the cog sci stuff. **update: I wouldn't worry about your grades--instead, focus on the intellectual content of the course. I did badly on the homeworks and never participated, but somehow managed an A-. If I knew that's how it would have been the whole time, I wouldn't have had as much resent towards this course.

Comment: Sweetser knows what she is doing. She is definitely an expert in the field of Linguistics. That being said, this is a difficult class. She expects you to know what you're doing from the beginning. Although she is easy to talk to, always offering to read essay drafts, and very approachable, she can't help but sometimes make you feel stupid. Her lectures are pretty dry, but it's nice to listen to her talk about what she loves. Overall, she is a really great person.

Comment: The professor is definitely an expert in the linguistics field, as many older people from other countries took the class just to be under her instruction. However, you should probably go into this class with at least Ling100 and Ling106 under your belt. I took this class as a sophomore undergrad and found the class filled with mostly grad students (a little bit intimidating). The homework assignments aren't too bad...about 2-3 pages of written analysis to questions. You get to choose the topic for the final presentation and paper, so as long as you pay attention to the material, you'll do fine. She teaches the material well and provides a lot of examples, but sometimes it's a little boring (I've fallen asleep a few times in that class). Just be sure to go into the class prepared.

Comment: Course assignments consisted of two HW assignments and one ~20-page paper on a topic of your choice (no midterm or final). This class has a ton of overlap with Ling C105, so if you've taken one, don't take the other. Prof. Sweetser's lecture style mainly consists of talking and occasionally writing on the blackboard. Note-taking can be painful because there is a severe lack of visual aids (PowerPoint slides, handouts, etc. -- even the syllabus was vague and made no mention of grading criteria), and because the lectures themselves are disorganized. However, since there were only 2 assignments (which cover specific topics), one could easily get away with not knowing a lot of the material. Aside from the unfocused lectures, Sweetser was enthuasiastic about the subject and is willing to help if you ask for it.
