Comment: The key to doing well in this class are the review sheets of the previous lecture that are handed out at the start of each class. Assignments were a little bit tricky, but exams weren't too bad.

Comment: Assignments and exams were not really related. Assignments were pretty hard. Office hours with prof were interesting, but not for homework. just for concepts from class or textbook. Also helpful for exams. Homework... got more doable towards the end. Not because it got any easier, but got a little more used to the problems. Acing homework =/= acing exams, not always at least.

Comment: Assignments were difficult because no examples are shown in lecture so it can be tough to figure out without going to office hours. However, office hours were not very helpful since he doesn't like answering questions on the homework.

Comment: No question Goldstein knows his stuff and he's personally passionate about it, but that doesn't always come across in his voice, i.e., it can be a bit dry at times. First half of the class is basic atmospheric science while the second half is actual air pollution stuff with LOTS of kinetics stuffs. Pretty standard class.

Comment: The class was very straightforward. Go to lectures, read the book, understand the homeworks, get A. Goldstein is a solid lecturer, he is passionate about the material, and tries to create passion in his students. He tries to integrate recent discoveries and his lab work with the material which is nice though if you eventually realize that you are not that really interested in the material and that you can still get an A by just reading the book like I did, you start to get reluctant to go to lecture. Homeworks are 30% of the grade but aren't very hard if you are a science major. Exams are essentially just like problem sets but tend to focus on things that were not directly covered in problem sets but applying the same principles on them. Plus he lets you bring a cheat sheet which is really nice. Really chill guy too, he gave me advice on my Chem 4B special project and gave the class a lab tour at the end of the semester. Overall, very fun class if you are interested in the material and at least a B+ as long as you are a science major.

Comment: Allen Goldstein is a fantastic professor. He's engaging, open to questions and has a great attitude with students. He is very knowledgeable about atmospheric chemistry. I'd definitely recommend this class, you can learn a lot about pollution. I'm not sure what the official prerequisites are, but you end up needing some math (some derivatives/separable DE's and simple integrals) and a little bit of chem 1A level knowledge (i.e. reaction rates, ideal gas law). Assignments are challenging at times, but they're great prep for the exams. He says he gives hard exams but grades leniently. I found the exams to be reasonably challenging but very fair.

Comment: Goldstein really cares about his students and is obviously passionate about what he's teaching. Tests are multiple choice and free response that comes from lecture. Reading is not necessary. Lecture slides are posted but it's best to take notes in class since that's what's going to be on the tests. Goldstein talks quickly though, so it's really hard to take good notes and keep up with him. Discussion is used to answer homework questions so GO! You get all the answers to the homework which can be difficult if you don't listen carefully or take good notes in lecture.

Comment: Loving this class..Professor Goldstein talks about the physical aspects of ES (atmosphere, oceans, the sun, chemistry stuff) while Professor Potts talks about the biological aspects. I personally prefer Goldstein's topics..I'm an engineering major haha. Potts is more enthusiastic, true, but his material is more boring for me. Overall a good class to get exposed to environmental issues..not too hard at all, especially for more science-minded people.

Comment: Really enthusiastic about what he is teaching. Go into his office hours and GSI office hours, show interest, and you will basically be able to get the answers for the homework. Don't buy the book unless you plan on being an Environmental Sciences major.

Comment: Goldstein loves what he is teaching, but sometimes goes further in depth than should be expected of an intro class. He is great in office hours, so really take advantage of them. Just going to lecture may not always be enough to get a good grade on the homework. Really study the problem sets, because you will be tested on them and more.

Comment: Class is easy as long as you do all of the (easy) problem sets and review a decent amount for the exams. Both professors (Goldstein and Potts) are enthusiastic and knowledgable. Sometimes they would make careless mistakes during lectures that students could potentially get confused about, but they worked with each other to be as clear as possible. The material was easy to understand and interesting most of the time, and the guest lecturers added interesting topics and new points of view to the subject.

Comment: easy class. really detailed speaker thuogh, and it pays to jot down everything he says. less enthusiastic than Potts, but Potts is just an excited guy. Goldstein knows his stuff like mad. He's very accomodating with Office hours, although it seems like he appreciates it if you come with more detailed questions. for basic concepts, go to GSI's and dont waste his time. exams are reasonable, correlate with lectures. good interesting class

Comment: Goldstein and Potts made quite the pair; throughout the semester, I found myself engaged in class and looking forward to attending class each MWF. Although homework assignments were helpful, exams were formatted in a manner more difficult than necessary. Overall an interesting class. challenging without being too difficult
