Comment: Took ESPM 15, not 150, but 15 isn't on here for some reason. Pretty good intro to environmental science and issues surrounding the environment. Barely went to lecture as slides were posted online and a good skimming through them was sufficient for midterms/final. Discussion was pretty helpful for getting clarification on homework questions and concepts in class. Some lectures were more boring than others but there were frequent guest speakers and other professors who would guest lecture so it was a good change of pace from Potts and Fung who were very good and passionate lecturers. Learned about water and air quality, change on a global scale, ecosystem services, some ecology, waste management, and the technical, social, and political approaches to environmental management.

Comment: Although I didn't dedicate much time into the class, the course was definitely one that anyone could succeed in! Tests and assignments were reasonable, and Potts was definitely enthusiastic and fun to listen to.

Comment: Potts really cares about his students and is obviously passionate about what he's teaching. Tests are multiple choice and free response that comes from lecture. Reading is not necessary. Lecture slides are posted but it's best to take notes in class since that's what's going to be on the tests. Potts talks quickly though, so it's really hard to take good notes and keep up with him. Discussion is used to answer homework questions so GO! You get all the answers to the homework which can be difficult if you don't listen carefully or take good notes in lecture.

Comment: Really enthusiastic about what he is teaching. Go into his office hours and GSI office hours, show interest, and you will basically be able to get the answers for the homework. Don't buy the book unless you plan on being an Environmental Sciences major.

Comment: I've never been a science person, and merely took this class for breadth. However, I found myself anticipating each lecture, as the material was simultaneously relevant and engaging, and Potts made for an enticing lecturer. Granted, the midterms and final weren't necessarily on par with the helpful weekly homework assignments, having entailed bizarre multiple choice questions regarding topics we'd seldom discussed, and short answer questions that were vague to the point of excess. Overall a great class, most managed to do well regardless of the exams, and I would recommend ES 10 to others.

Comment: Nice slides, sometimes class materials are kind of scattered. The class does not challenge you intellectually, doesn't require analytical skills. but you have to remember a lot of stuff. And sometimes Potts is not as clear as Goldstein.

Comment: easy class. come to lecture. goes off topic sometimes, but the topics he teaches are the easier ones. he teaches with goldstein, who is ALOT more detailed and YOU MUST LISTEN TO EVERY DETAIL HE SAYS. not so with potts

Comment: Like Peter, Matt is very interesting to listen to/discuss environmental issues with. This GETH seminar really doesn't ask anything of you that you wouldn't already be doing as an environmentally conscious individual. Weekly seminar meetings include talks given by guest lecturers or discussions with Peter and Matt that are always the best.

Comment: Matt is an enjoyable professor. While this course is only for the members of GETH it is great nonetheless. Most classes actually spent indoors will involve discussions about issues with long, funny, and intelligent exchanges between the two teachers. The class is worth it no that fact alone. Then there the field-trips: kayaking near otters and talking with various professors around campus or going to a farmer's market. Really, join GETH...totally worthwhile if only for this class.
