Comment: Very relaxed class with pretty minimal work. Grading was based on attendance, weekly 300 word responses, and two open-book, open-note exams. Dewulf is incredibly nice and genuinely wants to help all his students and get to know them as much as he can. He's very accommodating to students' needs too. I'd say the amount of work is about 3 hr/week to get an A assuming you show up to class and talk too. I'd recommend any class with Dewulf!

Comment: my third dutch class with dewulf. Extremely interesting professor and very kind. best professor ive had at berkeley. the only work outside of class is a 300 word written response per week thats more for credit than content. A midterm and a final. The final is usually done for his class the week before dead week which makes it easy to do well on. I highly recommend the class, he makes it quite interactive too!!! Take it if you want a interesting easy course

Comment: He is my favorite professor at Cal. If i have room I will go for a Dutch minor just because I want to take more of his classes. He is such a kind hearted professor who really cares about the material. One midterm, weekly bspace forum posts and one final. A very lenient grader. Just do not take him for granted and make sure you do the reading because he does cold calls every class. It may seem like he doesn't care if you don't know an answer but he highly takes it into account for your final grade. It is a very easy class if you just show up and pay attention and learn. How hard is that?

Comment: I'm a senior and Jereon is the BEST prof I have ever had at Cal. He is so nice and sweet and he made this history class extremely engaging. Workload is reasonable and the tests are graded leniently as well. LOVE LOVE!

Comment: Fantastic instructor. Enjoyable course material, even if you're only taking it for the AC credit. Take good notes and you'll ace the midterm/final; read and complete the weekly responses early and you'll ace the homework section. Attendance and participation count for credit, so don't skip class. Professor Dewulf really wants all of his students to enjoy the course.

Comment: Class was extremely interesting and enlightening. Jeroen is also the sweetest guy ever. However it was pretty and it was clear that a large contingent of the class was there for that reason and took advantage of it.

Comment: Weekly responses, open note midterm and final. Dewulf is very enthusiastic whenever he teaches and tries to engage the students as much as he can. He even tried to get to know everyone's name despite having about 80 people in the class! Grading is quite lenient but you do need to attend class regularly and respond on time for the weekly bcourse question. Missed 5 classes, and 2 weekly responses and still received an A-! Fairly low work load too, about 2-3 hours a week.

Comment: Jeroen is a nice guy. I took this class senior year while running around the country doing medical school interviews. I missed sixteen days of class and ended up with an A-. Like the other reviewers have mentioned, there is a 300 word response due every two weeks. These responses are low stress and you just write whatever you think. There were no essays and just an in class midterm and final which were fine. I feel like a lot of science people and engineers take this class. I saw a lot of my classmates coding or reading graphs during class. Professor Jeroen took a personal interest in my medical school application and would ask me when I came to class whether I got in or not. Happily, at the end of the semester, I had good news to share with him and he was very happy for me! I feel like he is very understanding and a low stress professor to take a class with. He also has an interesting perspective on the Dutch colonization of America! One thing to note, the grading scale is pretty weird. The cutoff for A is 95%. All the grades are shifted like this.

Comment: Dutch 171 with Professor Dewulf is a great way to get rid of the AC requirement. We had one assignment on bSpace due every two weeks that you got full credit for doing and participation and attendance was a large portion of our grade. Both the midterm and final were open book and open note and were graded fairly lightly. The only real drawback to this class is there is a 10 page paper due towards the end of the semester, however the subject of the paper is entirely up to you and the Professor discusses with each student about the subject of their paper. The Professor also speaks very softly and dreamily, and during some lectures I found myself fighting sleep, but as long as you continue to preoccupy yourself with note taking you should be able to stay awake. Also note that the Professor makes cold calls in class that are part of your "participation" grade, and if you fail to answer the question correctly he will take notice. Overall Professor Dewulf is extremely nice and understanding. I really enjoyed the relaxation and lack of stress that came with the course. This definitely helped make my first fall semester at Berkeley an easier one.

Comment: Boring class (sorry, I'm a science major and the humanities bore me), but the instructor was very kind, helpful, and enthusiastic in class. Lectures would be interesting to people interested in the subject. Tests were very easy (in class essays, loosely graded) and I got a 100% on the final essay, which makes me think the professor was very generous in grading. Great class to get the AC requirement out of the way. Work load is small.
