Comment: Picks up more in the second half of the class. Very enthusiastic professor, you can tell she really wanted everyone to learn despite the lectures being rather dry at times. Exams were all multiple choice and felt pretty fair to me. There's a paper, but there's plenty of time and the sources are already given. Overall, a pretty good class, though I might consider another if you're just doing it to fulfill the AC requirement.

Comment: This was one of those classes that gets you really excited on the first day but becomes something to dread twice a week after that. The professor was very enthusiastic about the material but I feel tried too hard to make the course challenging when the material itself shouldn't have been that complicated.

Comment: Sometimes the information Professor Hlusko is telling is hard to follow because a story may jump around or because some slides are vague, but many of the stories are really interesting and help to cement the knowledge in our brains. Overall, very interesting class and I learned a lot about our history I wouldn't have learned elsewhere. Even better, it counts as an AC!

Comment: Although Hlusko is passionate, I found her to be rather annoying. The first half of the class is incredibly boring, however, the second half I think was much more interesting. This is one of those classes that appear to be an easy A and but in reality are not. Overall class was alright, but definitely not my favorite.

Comment: Professor Hlusko is a kind, enthusiastic and energetic professor. Her emotions really delve into what she teaches. The first half of the class was really interesting, but the second half, to me, just seemed like random stuff related to the course, as the topic varied almost every week or two. Her exams are quite tough, as you are required to memorize important dates of evolution, and the gradings of the paper were quite harsh regarding the paper format. The lab was easy and quite fun. Overall, I do recommend taking this class for AC and other requirements only if you are taking it for P/NP. If you take it for a letter grade, you should make sure you really know your stuff, because it's quite a rough path towards an A.

Comment: She's incredibly passionate about her subject, but for a psych major merely taking this class to fulfill the evolution requirement I felt it was okay... There is A LOT of memorization in this class. And I mean random anthropological dates and facts about fossils and the like. I also found Hlusko a bit arrogant and unwilling to take questions during class, which I found annoying. They grade really strictly on the paper, I got points taken off for not bolding my name on the first page, and random points for not elaborating enough in the body paragraphs. DON'T take this class to fulfill your AC requirement - unless you take it P/NP. Overall, not an easy class, and I wouldn't recommend it unless you're interested in anthropology and basic biology. The average for Fall 2012 was a B- (82%), if that helps. As a non-biologically inclined psych major, I put in a lot of work and effort into this class and only got a B. Also-save yourself 60 bucks and don't get the book - it's totally not necessary.

Comment: Engaging lecturer, interesting topic. It'll take a decent amount of work to get an A in the course. Exams are mostly multiple choice with a few short answers. One 3-4 page paper due before Thanksgiving. A class worth taking for the AC requirement.

Comment: Too much anthropology first half of the semester. Overall though, the content was absolutely great and taught me a lot. Great melange of material. Prof Hlusko knows her subject material well. However the 1.5 hour lectures make it easy to feel sleepy. Exams require too much memorization of details regarding dates etc. Another con is that there are no discussion sections. No webcasts either so attending all the lectures is a must.

Comment: Prof. Hlusko is amazing. She's not only passionate about her subject and teaching that subject, but also about her students. I went through an awful personal situation while taking this class, pretty close to when the essay was due, and I emailed her about it. She responded immediately and gave me a two week extension, even though I couldn't get a doctor's note. She emailed me several times over those two weeks to see how I was doing and emphasized that I could take an incomplete in the class if I didn't think I had enough time to finish the essay. Since the class she has continued to email me and ask about how I've been doing, making sure that I'm doing alright. Yes, the exams were a bit hard to study for, but after the first one you start to understand her testing style, so it's not too bad. The three group assignments are easy and straightforward. I enjoyed this course initially because of her enthusiasm, but ended up loving it because of her consideration. This professor cares. Professors like this are the reason that I came to Berkeley.

Comment: There's a LOT of material in this class. The AC-ness of this class feels forced at times. Professor Hlusko is a very good lecturer, but her exam questions are just stupid because they could be random facts from lecture. There's also 3 annoying group assignments where you have to physically meet with 3 other people to complete (pretty much just busy work). In retrospect, I think I would have skipped this class. Interesting, but no thanks.

Comment: Really fascinating class. I took this class to fulfill my AC. Going in, I didn't expect too much of it and thought I wouldn't be too interested in it. The topics were well chosen and overall the material was very interesting, perhaps one of the most interesting class I've taken at Cal. Recommended, especially if you take this P/NP (very good for engineers fulfilling breadth). Exams are no fun. Memorize, memorize, memorize. Assignments aren't nearly as interesting as lecture.

Comment: She is very enthusiastic about each of the very interesting topics she covers, such as phenotypic variation, racial formation, and anthropological evolution. I loved how she separated those 3 concepts into 3 parts of the class and that near the end, she brought it all together to really show how different people are. Her tests demand a lot of detail, but if you really study and really care, the information will just come naturally to you. The first midterm is the hardest; the final easiest, at least for me. The GSI's are all very smart, and hopefully they'll provide discussion sections to help students understand the vast amounts of material. There is not really any homework, just easily graded group assignments and a big essay that will be graded somewhat fairly. This a is great class, and what you reap will be what you sow. Good luck!

Comment: Hlusko is very enthusiastic and likes to tell stories about her work, esp in the field. The organization of the class is kind of weird, but then again it's a weird course in the first place. Touches on human evolution (don't worry much about dates, know them relative to each other, BUT do know which dig produced what discovery), stats, skin color, hella random stuff. So it is a bit difficult to study for. Going to the GSI-led review session is helpful though. They give you a pretty good overall picture of what the course went over. Mind you, you still have to look things over on your own. Test questions are multiple choice, with essay/short answer portion. If you went to lecture, a lot of these are pretty intuitive. However, I did not like the group assignments. It's just a paaain to do and I did not feel like I learned anything from them. They were just a chore. Tip: AP Bio helps so much for this course. That and knowing some stats. You can seriously breeze through this course if you have those two under your belt. Otherwise, it's still pretty easy.

Comment: Does an okay job. Lectures are organized strangely. The lectures before the first midterm, for example, can be easily organized into two categories: chronology of human evolution and Darwin's theory of natural selection. The obvious way to organize the lectures is to either to do all of chronology and then follow it up with a series o lectures on natural selection, or to do it the other way around. But no, Prof. Hlusko intersperses the two. First lecture goes up to early Australopithecus, and then two lectures on natural selection follow. And then we are back to chronology and go up to genus Homo, before going back to natural selection again. And then she goes back and finishes chronology up to modern H. sapiens. Such organization completely disrupts the flow of the chronology. Nothing too unexpected with exams and assignments. There are 2 midterms and a final. Roughly half of the final questions are taken directly from midterms. There are three sets of discussion questions to be done in groups of 4 students. There is a "research paper" for which the professor provides all the sources that she wants you to cite, so really there is no "research" going on as you don't have to look for suitable sources yourself.

Comment: Want a fun easy A class? Never took a college bio class and thought this class was cake. Interesting content (learned about cannibalism in island cultures!) + extremely enthusiastic and helpful professor & GSI's. No discussion, no homework- just VERY short reading assignments & a couple (like 2?) group assignments (EASYYY) and a paper (EASIER! easy grading easy content ... everything). Hardest part about this class is getting in...do it phase I, especially if you're a freshman.

Comment: Class is scaled not curved, so technically everyone can get an A (not gonna happen anyway lol). A lot of memorization involved for exams; try to take notes during lectures since the ppt slides she posts on bspace are very brief. Group assignments a major pita since trying to get 3 other random people to meet up at the same time is not as easy as it sounds. Assignment itself graded based on effort i think. 1 research paper with sources provided, so no need to do your own research. Final recycled a lot of questions from the 2 midterms. Easy way to fulfil the AC req IMO.

Comment: Hlusko was so enthusiastic about the course materials it was infectious. I don't think I would have gone to class every lecture if she wasn't as enthusiastic because the material was, at times, a drag. A downside is that she makes you do group assignments which, though they are not hard, can be time consuming because she encourages you to meet with your group to do the assignment. Exams are easy and readings are merely "recommended."

Comment: Puts up Powerpoints for lectures before class starts, so it's easier to take notes but not as helpful when you don't go to class because some of them are just pictures. Seems to know quite a bit about the topic and explains it well enough. Abridged version of the textbook. 2 midterms that were not too bad. 3 easy discussion assignments with the same 4 (randomized) people from the class. 1 paper with sources already given. Final wasn't too bad.
