Comment: This is for the photoshop seminar. There are no exams and the assignments were like "take a photo" or "color this photo of my car." I didn't know what I was expecting for this class exactly but if I didn't need the unit I probably wouldn't have taken it. It was easy but really boring. I think he was BSing a lot of things or trying to show off but honestly, clicking the paintbrush tool on photoshop and making squiggly lines isn't that impressive. Overall, everything he "taught" for the past semester can be found online on photoshop tutorials or something. It was basically how to use the buttons in photoshop and that was it.

Comment: much of the course taught by student presentations. I would rather learn from the professor. He gave good advice and tips upon review of your presentation

Comment: No exams for the seminar. Just prepare a presentation and a 5-page paper to pass the class. Professor Tongue is very well-versed and extremely entertaining and clear when explaining things. Overall, a great seminar with an unique educational experience.

Comment: Ohhhh man. This class was the hardest I've ever taken at Cal, and I've taken a ton of other courses (including a grad one). The homework started off easy but then became way too difficult. One GSI was bad but the other, Kan, managed to save me from failing the course. The dude deserves a medal. I think many people prefer midterms over quizzes, so be warned about those. Each quiz is one problem (easier than homework, which says something about the difficulty of the hw), and that one stupid problem is worth almost 10% of your grade. You can either make your quizzes worth a ton or your final, but like others have said, the final is ridiculous. ... I do like Tongue's character though... if only he had more than 1 hour of OH a week...

Comment: Quizzes were moderately difficult, but fair. The FINAL WAS KILLER. Homework was hard as heck, but his enthusiastic teaching made up for a lot of it.

Comment: There are no exams. There weren't this semester, anyway. We had a "mini quiz" each week that our grade was going to be based on. Basically, it was either 70% mq or 70% on the final exam, with 10% going to homework regardless. So if you fail on the mq's, you're pretty much sunk in the class. The final was pretty crazy. Do not brush off the mq, they are where you can really get points. I would not plan on getting a good grade on the final at all. The lectures are ok. They often times don't have much to do wtih the homework or quizzes though. So read the book and practice examples there. In a lot of ways, there is no way to really prepare for the quizes. Just do your best to understand the material

Comment: He has a great personality and keeps you interested in class, however lectures do not necessarily help you with the homework. Discussion is very helpful for that.

Comment: I understood the class well and worked my butt off. I didn't make it to class everyday, and he knew it. No one can deny that Tongue plays favorites. As someone mentioned before, the quizzes were huge in the class, and I worked super hard to stay on track. Of course, right after pulling an all nighter studying for one and acing it, I went to turn it in as the prof was walking towards the door; I shouted at him and he pretended to ignore me. I ran after him; right as his foot stepped out of the door, I caught up with him with my quiz out. He refused to take it, as he was "out the door" and refused to take my quiz. This was one of, what, 5-6 quizzes? C+ it is.

Comment: He's extremely enthusiastic but his quizzes and exams were much more difficult than the material presented in his lectures and homework assignments. Funny and entertaining, but he makes your entire grade based on quizzes and the final so don't take this class unless you beast on tests.

Comment: He's a very enthusiastic lecturer, but picks easier problems than on the homework/miniquizzes. Final was fair and straight forward. Since homework and discussion are not mandatory, it's up to you to keep up with the class.

Comment: Most interesting professor in the ME department, very funny teaching style. Got lost in the lectures after a while, but the GSI can always pick you up. Gets a quiz once couple weeks, do your homework and you will be fine. The final is just many quiz questions put together.

Comment: Tongue was always excited to teach us about dynamics. He has some fun demos and shows interesting videos during break. The homework wasn't too difficult as long as you pay attention in class. Exams were straight-forward and followed the homework. Also, we had mini-quizzes instead of midterms, which was nice.
