Comment: Overall, exams and assignments were fair. Labs poorly written and hard to follow. Culler is pretty enthusiastic about making sure you understand the material though.

Comment: Culler is a super enthusiastic professor. He cared a lot about the class, and was very helpful. He is not a great lecturer, but he is definitely a good one. The class itself was undergoing restructuring, so there were definitely hiccups along the way. The projects and homeworks were cool, but tough and at times poorly specced out. But CS162 is a very worthwhile class!

Comment: Prof. Culler is great. The TAs on the other hand... Assignments and exams were complete B.S. None of the projects were graded until project 3 was half done, which ruins the purpose of having to complete design documents.

Comment: Prof. Culler is one of the most invested professors I've met. He's really into teaching and cares a lot about personal development. Assignments are challenging and take a long time. If you can do them, you'll get a lot out of them. If you can't finish them, they're the most frustrating goddamn things in existence.

Comment: Lectures made me fall asleep almost every time -- his voice is, uh, soothing, I guess -- but other than that they were pretty clear, though not the greatest way to learn the material. Homeworks didn't have much substance and were basically finger exercises in C. Projects were more substantial, but still felt like extended finger exercises, since you could get through them without knowing the concepts very well. Exams were of variable difficulty (with one with an average of 38), but given that they're still working out some kinks, they were reasonable. Decent class for getting an overview of OSes and systems programming.

Comment: This class was tedious and difficult for all the wrong reasons. The exams really killed this class. The first midterm was a good, fair test with an average in the high 70s. For some reason, this didn't fly with the TAs so the 2nd midterm was insanely difficult with an average in the 30s and the final was pretty difficult too. In general, the exams involved low level coding and deep understanding of concepts that were only superficially covered in class, so most of the tests ended up being guesswork. Projects were long and meticulous, and somewhat difficult. Homeworks were the same way, though shorter. Overall, the professor was an ok lecturer and seemed reasonable, but the course staff seemed harsh and although they seemed interested in improving CS162, I don't think they did a very good job of it. For the effort I put in, I don't feel like I learned much from this class.

Comment: Great professor and great projects. HWs left much to be desired, but overall, I learned a lot. Exams were ridiculously hard. But you could tell the TAs worked really hard to put this new iteration together. I would recommend taking this class.
