Comment: Exams werent too horrible. However, he was absolutely horrible for E and M; taught off a powerpoint, never gave examples. For thermodynamics though, he was really good.

Comment: Professor Liphardt was a very quirky dood. Firstly, I feel like he was much more into his research than actually teaching (evident because he spent an entire class talking about his research because he was tired of talking about thermodynamics). His research is in thermodynamics so maybe he considers it so basic he felt like talking about it was a waste of time. He is a very smart person and had something good things to say about the material, but again didn't care about really knowing anything that didn't directly pertain to his research. In one class he must have said "I don't know, google it" almost 10 times and he was unable to draw how water molecules interact with each other (the whole class had to tell him how). Once we got to E&M, the class and especially the demos got more interesting but by then a large majority of the class had decided never to come to class ever again. Secondly, he had a terrible blunder with his exams. The first exam he gave was a almost exactly the same as one of his previous tests and the class average was an 86%. He had no idea the head GSI had posted his old exams for study material on bspace (nor did he even know the exact day of our exam and was surprised to find it was a week later than he thought when he asked the class). The second exams and the final were original and were of the expected difficulty although even in his second exam he referenced charts and weren't drawn and had to be drawn by GSI's on the board after they found out about the mistake. Overall, not a great professor. Take someone else if you can.

Comment: Professor Liphardt was engaging and presented awesome demos. However, I found that lecture was rarely instructive beyond basic concepts -- I learned to solve problems in lab and discussion. Understand the assignments and work through some old test problems, and you'll do great on exams. Spoiler: Liphardt likes to recycle problems from old midterms and finals, so study up.

Comment: Liphardt obviously does not care about teaching lower division classes like this, and it shows. He was only mildly enthusiastic at best for the Thermodynamics part of the class, but after the first midterm he completely stopped trying. There were always less than 20 students in his class at lecture, and he breezed through powerpoints and equations with either little explanation, or went into great detail about off-topic subjects. His demos are cool, but he seems to only be interested in doing those and not actually teaching. If you teach yourself though, this class should be a breeze. Exams aren't too hard (to offput how much he sucks I guess), and he frequently reuses old test problems.

Comment: Terrible lecturer. Never provided example problems. What he did do though was explain things very conceptually. Unfortunately his lectures would often go on to discuss things that weren't going to be on the exam. On the upside though, exams were very manageable (the first midterm was literally copied from his old midterms that he didn't realize the head GSI had posted on bspace). In short, he's not the greatest professor, but he is a pretty easy professor, and if you put in the time you can still learn a lot of physics from his class.

Comment: Liphardt himself isn't a very impressive lecturer. For the first few weeks (when I attended), he did a few cool demos here and there. The main reason for a decent rating is because of the link to lectures on E&M by Prof. Walter Lewin of MIT. These helped tremendously and Prof. Lewin is undoubtedly a much better lecturer than Prof. Liphardt. Assignments were from Mastering Physics and were boring. Exams were badly prepared (he took them from his old exams), but got progressively better (lower mean).

Comment: He has no enthusiasm to teach. Cool demos in class. Talks too much about big concepts. You can condense his 90 min lecture into 3 minutes. His exams are real easy, but if you mess up, then it game over because of the curve. When over a quarter of the class gets a 100, you know the tests are too easy.

Comment: Horrible lectuerer. Doesn't do any problems, just talks with powerpoints. Lazy when it comes to exams - be sure to go over old exams for he likes to reuse problems!

Comment: Liphardt seems to be very excited about teaching the course. Although he does not go over mathematical problems in class, he goes over the overall concept of the course in lecture. Exams had large parts taken from old exams and assignments were pretty normal.

Comment: Lazy about exams and lecturing - half the class doesn't come to lecture. He doesn't go over the material covered on his exams/homework well, and only does experiments he finds interesting. He's lazy about making exams and constantly uses questions from old exams. At least he's enthusiastic.

Comment: Lectures are very big-picture oriented- lots of demonstrations, typically not too math-heavy. If you want your lectures to gear you up for the next midterm, find another professor, but Liphardt is good for those who need that time to understand the concepts.

Comment: Very eclectic guy. He's very funny to watch during lecture as his idiosyncracies just stand out. He's very busy with his research which explains why he's not as involved with teaching. His exams are ridiculously easy since he just reuses his old ones.

Comment: Hated the class. Liphardt is decent for thermodynamics, but is absolutely terrible at lecturing for electricity and magnetism, which is the bulk of the course. He also copied the entire first midterm from previous posted midterms on bSpace, so the average was ridiculously high. Second midterm wasn't too great either.

Comment: Exams are poorly written (once he completely reused old midterm questions, but he forgot to copy certain parts, so the whole test was just confusing - although since he didn't even bother to change the numbers, most of the class got a really high score, the grade distribution ended up being half a bell curve ending at 100), his lectures are seemingly pointless (cool demos though, and he seems enthusiastic about stuff..), and the physics book is expensive and somewhat useless.

Comment: Liphardt is a genius, but he's not a very good instructor because he's so much smarter than his students and doesn't really know how to explain stuff to people who aren't as smart as him. It was still an interesting class but I had to teach myself everything because the lectures were far too confusing so I didn't go. (Still got an A in the class!!!)

Comment: Professor is the worst professor I have had at UC Berkeley thus far. He is incapable of explaining anything clearly and he gets distracted with his demonstrations that often do not work. Attendance is ridiculously low (40 people or so) considering the class is about 600. Avoid if possible.

Comment: You know, I really liked physics 8A but Physics 8B just killed any remaining passion for physics. I did not learn much at all from the lectures Professor Liphardt, and to be honest, he is not a good professor at teaching. I'm sure he is a decent and passionate guy, but not for teaching. The first exam was easy but the second was a nightmare. I'm just glad it's over, but avoid L. if you can.

Comment: Liphardt is not a good professor. He takes a break during an hour and a half lecture which is unnecessary. You can teach yourself physics just as easily from the textbook and if you have a good GSI I wouldn't bother showing up to lecture.

Comment: He is kind of a funny guy in the lecture. But his lectures are really not helpful. I really don't think one should teach physics with powerpoint slides. It should be taught with black board and chalk. I mostly learn the stuffs from discussion section (which I sometimes don't go) and masterphysics, and the stuffs I learned in middle school. (yes middle school). Overall the materials aren't so bad, but he uses a lot of calculus to solve the problem, which I don't think is necessary. His exam was ok, for the problem solving part. But he also uses fill in the blank questions, which is completely stupid (according to my GSI, most of the GSI's thought in the same way too)
