Comment: He is the most eccentric professor I have had at Berkeley. He is very passionate and very interesting. On the teaching side of things, he didn't really get to cover a lot of topics in depth, but he taught us what we needed to know for the exams. He would get side-tracked a lot and that was a bit frustrating, but he was very effective in getting us to know what he wanted us to know.

Comment: Didn't teach a whole lot in lecture. He mostly talks about what he likes to talk about, and frequently picks on students. Although not everyone appreciates it, he does make plenty of hilarious and sometimes awkward remarks about the class. Exam wasn't bad, but I feel like it didn't represent the material very well. Meh, what did you expect from chem1B?

Comment: Moretto is literally the worst professor I have ever had. He has no clue what it takes to be a teacher. He spends all of his time attempting to be funny (and failing), forgetting that he is actually supposed to be teaching us something about chemistry. He spends entire lectures going around the room calling on students and asking them questions, instead of just telling us the answers to the questions and moving on with the lecture material. Plus, he says downright inappropriate things, like to one girl who couldn't answer one of his questions: "I want to strangle you with your own hair." In the 5 weeks or so that he was my instructor for Chem 1B, I learned next to nothing from him, teaching myself everything out of the textbook or learning from the GSIs. The homework didn't relate to what was covered in lecture, considering the standard Chem 1B material (according to the course curriculum) was barely brought up in lecture at all. Looking at past exams on the material he was supposed to cover, he was utterly unsuccessful in going over the material in even close to as much depth. I feel like I truly missed out on learning kinetics of chemistry, one of the main (or only) reasons I was looking forward to Chem 1B. His exams were predominantly qualitative, with only a couple mundane problem solving questions, despite the fact that kinetics, nuclear, and electrochem (the three topics he was SUPPOSED to teach) are fairly heavily quantitative. Avoid Moretto if you have the option to. If you need to take Chem 1B, I hope for your sake you don't have Moretto so that you might learn something and not waste your time.

Comment: do not skip his lectures; exam was entirely based on his lecture!!! course had website, but he did not update. no credit given for exam unless problem solved as he had done in lecture. maybe not a problem for an upper div class, but maddening when all he is teaching is acids at an ap chem level.

Comment: Okay at lecturing. Fair midterm; hint: study his previous midterms, they're very similar year to year. Oh, and he's also a small boss in the Cyprus mafia, so don't anger him during lecture. Or he may kill your family. Watch out. Don't go to his office hours, you might die. Just attend lectures, take notes, and be gone.

Comment: Not a fan. Full of interesting stories and excitement, but not good at actually teaching you anything. I bombed his first midterm because even though I went to every lecture, I didn't understand most of what he said. Had to teach myself between the midterm and the final.

Comment: Wasted a lot of time telling long jokes. Became more focused on the coursework itself as the semester progressed. Unique sense of humor, likes to pick on students. Don't sit on the front if you can't handle pressure.

Comment: okay, so there were digressions and "picking" on students in the front. however, he gives thorough explanations of concepts and techniques, and he really cared for our comprehension in his reviews, telling us what the hell went on and why we should care. much better than how douskey did her review session (which was pretty much how to do your special project and how to study in groups, la-de-da...)

Comment: Funniest, most engaged chem professor I've ever had. He's not afraid to call people out and make them answer his lecture questions. Be sure to stay awake and follow the lecture so you won't be as embarrassed when he calls on you. His exams were hard but fair, although a bit too long to be finished in 50 minutes. He really cares about his students, so don't be afraid to approach him with questions!

Comment: One of the awesomest professors. He fills his lectures with side anecdotes and jokes. Some people complain that he spends too much time on stories and jokes, but what he's really trying to do is to deliver extra tidbits of chemical information and tell us why chemistry is such a beautiful science (and better than physics or biology).

Comment: Luciano loves teaching. His lectures are very entertaining. He goes off on tangents about European history and random facts. Don't worry though, those are not on his tests. However he is not a very effective teacher. Make sure that you read up on the side. His tests are fair and are based on what he lectures about, so make sure that you focus on those while studying.

Comment: A bit full of himself, but a good lecturer. He likes to talk about all things Italian, but he still gets the job done. His personality got a bit annoying after a while. He really wants you to understand concepts rather than know how to memorize formulas.

Comment: Very enthusiastic about Chemistry and being Italian. Sit in the front and interact during lecture, feel free to shout something when he asks. His exams were fair. 4B labs typically very analytical and special project usually takes up a lot of extra lab time.

Comment: Moretto is an enthusiastic Italian man, which makes for entertaining lectures that cover material for the most part. His part of the class spends a lot of time on seemingly minor elements of electrochemistry. His exams were fair and reasonable.

Comment: He's a great lecturer– demands class participation in a way that feels more old-school than awkward. This semester, his assignments often lagged behind the lecture by a week or more, and combined with the numerous typos and vague wording of the text, this made homework extremely difficult to do. Classes were only two 50-minute time slots per week, so we got through a medium-small amount of material and I would have preferred a third lecture.
