Comment: Dr. Douskey, although many CHEM 1A students do not have much experience with her, is a fantastic person and educator. She is the one who wrote the lab manual (consists of slight errors) which has allowed me to appreciate "green" chemistry at a much more application based approach. LOVE HER.

Comment: As my first lab lecture class in college, I expected the professor would go over procedures of the lab, but what she mostly did was explain the ideas and concepts behind each experiment which was never revisited. Pre-lab, post-lab questions, and the final project was too much for a one unit class. The final exam was pretty easy though.

Comment: The most boring lecturer ever! If there weren't iClickers I would have never gone. The lectures are absolutely useless and do not help with labs whatsoever. However, she was quite enthusiastic and helpful, and was always in favor of the students. The OWL Lab HW assignments were easy points and also not very useful. The exam was mostly easy as well.

Comment: Assignments: For a one-unit class, the assignments are ridiculous. The lab reports and pre-labs every week take up so much time, and they're worth a good amount of points. It depends on how hard of a grader your GSI is, but the amount/length of work is far too much. ● Enthusiasm: She's fairly enthusiastic, and she tries to be friendly by talking to the students in the front row. But it doesn't make up for how boring the class is. There is literally no point in going to the lectures because she goes into more detail than the lab manual, and the manual is already overly and unnecessarily explicit. ● Helpfulness: I guess she explains what you're supposed to do in lab well, but you don't even need that help. You can figure out what to do on the fly and be perfectly fine. She overemphasizes green chemistry far too much, too. ● Exams: There was only one exam, which was the final. That exam was pretty fair, but I don't think there should have been a final for a one-unit class. On top of that, there was a poster project due on the week before Dead Week. Personally, I think that just doing all the lab reports and all the work at lab was sufficient enough for the class. The project wasn't relevant to the class since it was a topic-of-choice poster (although it was quite cool seeing what other people researched). I believe my year was the first year that the exam was instituted as well. ● Recommendations: It sucks that most people have to take this class. Don't go to lecture (you can switch off with someone for iClicker duties), just show up to lab and spend a good amount of time on the reports. If you're doing well in 1A, the lab exam shouldn't be too difficult.

Comment: Her lecture is useless. The class itself is pretty simple if you get Chem 1A material in general. Class grade really only depends on how good or shitty your GSI is. Lab exam as a whole is not difficult. Infinitely easier than Chem 1A final, but what makes 1AL's lab exam difficult is that Douskey does not offer partial credit. Honestly, just make sure to get a decent GSI. Her lectures are useless. If it weren't for iClicker, I would not even go.

Comment: This class was ok, way more work than the 1 unit it takes up. OWL labskills were awesome, with unlimited submissions of answers. Douskey herself was pretty boring, with a kind of drone voice that makes people fall asleep. My GSi though was good. I liked him and he was able to help a lot on the labs, reports, and the formal writeups. This was the first year of a lab exam, and it was ok. Future years will at least have practice exams to get a feeling from so it could get better.

Comment: She doesn't teach you anything in lab lecture, but you should still go to get an idea of the lab and for iClicker points (go mostly for iClicker points). The lab exam was relatively easy (I got an 86%, average was 73%). However, I was very bitter with the class because I heard everybody got an A in Chem Lab, but Fall 2012 was the first semester they introduced the lab exam, which brought everyone's grades down and I got a horrible GSI. Rob Johns is his name, switch sections immediately if you end with him. He teaches okay and is a friendly guy, but he is an evil grader. I suppose a B+ in the class isn't terrible considering he gave me a 59% on one of two formal labs in the course, but I was still very disappointed seeing how much effort I put into this worthless, 1-unit class. Be nice to your GSI. Go to their office hours.

Comment: Success if Chem 1AL is based entirely on your GSI and how they grade your work. I was fortunate enough to have an awesome GSI in Jean van Buren who made 3 hour labs much better than I thought they were going to be. There was an assignment every week and as the semester wore on, they became increasingly tedious. Also, Lab Lecture was pointless. I didn't learn anything and was only forced to go to get the iClicker points. All the material I was supposed to learn from 1AL I learned from 1A instead. The final exam was incredibly easy and I aced it due to my GSI. Overall I am still trying to figure out why they separated this class from 1A. Also this class should be 2 units. I put in way to much work for a 1 unit class.

Comment: Chem 1AL is way too much work for a 1 unit class. The course was all conducted by GSIs. She was kinda fun to listen to in lecture because she talked about some interesting green chem topics (although she put most people to sleep). Other than that, she was pretty unhelpful in terms of learning chemistry concepts. I learned all those from Chem 1A lecture. There is one exam; a lab final. There is also a lab report due almost every week. It's all up to the GSIs in terms of grading. Some will grade harder than others, so it's basically luck of the draw.

Comment: Caution! This review is not pertinent to anything but Chem1A Lab Lecture... She is super enthusiastic and tries to make the subject fun! Comment: Chem Lab is a chemistry lab, what more can be said. You'll find them exhausting to go to and the payoff isn't even that great. Most times you will find yourself in lab for 3 or 4 hours just doing titrations. Lordy lord knows how much we love titrations. The lab write ups weren't too bad, but the formal lab reports were graded quite harshly sometimes. The final project wasn't too bad or stressful. Most people did them the night before. Overall, this course is not the 1 unit it comes with, but hey, you have to take it with Chem1A, so there you go.

However usually your GSI will more than make up for that. 2 full lab reports. However I hear she writes the exams for Chem 1A. Her tests are not nice. Study hard ESPECIALLY if you aced/took Chem AP (like I had). Tests are based on synthesis of information (e.g. explain this concept that you didn't even know about using info you did know), NOT like just straight problem-and-answer high school tests.

Comment: The professor has a lab manual and that's it. You will probably never see this professor. The entire lab is dependent on your GSI - he/she lead the lab and discussion, grades your lab reports, etc. There are a total of 10 labs and 1 poster research project. Although the class is for one unit, it requires a lot of work and attentiveness. In addition, the labs are only somewhat related to the lectures.

Comment: Michelle Douskey is not the instructor of 1AL; rather, your GSI is entirely responsible for your individual lab section. That being said, the course consists of approximately ten labs, none of which are especially relevant to lecture (or free from tedium), and a laughably elementary poster (general chemistry "research") project which can, in some cases, boost your grade a letter grade in only a few hours of work.

Comment: Your time in this class is 75% determined by your GSI and how easy he/she grades and instructs you. This 1 unit class has way too much work for just one unit, and the four hour time block for a freshman is no pleasant experience. You will probably have to take this class, and you will not die, but you probably wont be enjoying your time either....

Comment: the weekly labs can either be extremely boring and mostly busy work or really interesting... the lab is done entirely by the GSI. My GSI was decent and my ratings reflect the course and not Dr. Dousky as I have never met her. Formal lab reports are time consuming but probably the most useful thing to take from the course...

Comment: I gave average ratings for Douskey because my experiences of interacting with her were just "meh" (hence, average), but I had Alex Hudson for my GSI. BEST GSI EVER! Seriously, he's so helpful. Not sure if you have the option of choosing him, but if you do get him, you're one lucky person. But labs are pretty stupid, not going to lie. Kinda sad that my high school sophomore year labs were much more difficult (hence FUN!) than Berkeley's chem labs...

Comment: Although is says Dr. Douskey is the the instructor, the labs are actually run by GSI's. Some labs are fun and some are straight out boring. It all depends. It really helps to have a good lab partner and to do the lab notebooks AHEAD of time because they can sometimes take an eon to accomplish. The worse part is that these are four hour labs (1 hour of discussion and 3 hours for labs). If you finish your labs fast then you can leave a lot earlier.

Her exams are very irrelevant from lecture material, but looking at past exams helped to some extent. Knowing how to do various calculations helps, as well as understanding the underlying principles. However, she's really cold outside of class. I went to see her to discuss the special poster project, and she did not help at all, constantly working on her own research writings on her computer when I was talking, and pointing out flaws rather than suggesting improvements.

Comment: Dr. Douskey is a generally very organized and thoughtful lecturer. She always takes the time to properly answer student questions during lecture, and is genuinely interested in her students when you go to office hours to talk about coursework (especially the Chem4B special research project). She became very interested in our project and gave us lots of ideas regarding possible ways to expand our ideas. EXAMS: Though many people may say Douskey's exams are unfair, this is generally not the case. She will include a few curve-ball questions in exams, in order to reward students who read thoroughly... and even though these things seem frustrating at first, they won't make or break your grade overall. If you really understand the general concepts she covers in lecture, you will do fine. She is an engaging lecturer even though she seems subdued on the surface. She is a great professor to introduce you to analytical chemistry.

Comment: Maybe I'm just a freshman, but this is honestly the worst class I've ever taken. The material is definitely boring (albeit Douskey's part is probably useful if you actually do analytical chemistry). I've also never felt more like grades weren't reflecting what we know as in this class: midterms suffer from being unnecessarily time limited, test grading is so strict to the key that you end up losing A LOT of points just for not having your answer in the vocabulary of the key, and homework is graded even more strictly for accuracy than tests. There aren't very many opportunities to practice problems and concepts, and the class is so random that every single review/study group that I've been to has completely failed me because tests and the actual curriculum aren't really consistent from year to year, so anyone who has taken it before who hosts any kind of study group can only help in either obvious or outdated/unrelated ways. I know there's still the final coming up, but I've never felt this bad about a class ever. The only good thing I can say about this class is that Douskey is a pretty nice person.

Comment: Dr. Douskey is one of those people you both love and hate. First of all, chem 4b is nothing like chem 4a, which was a very challenging and very rewarding class. Chem 4b should be its own separate lab class (which we are required to take anyways--chem 105). Douskey is not an actual professor, just a lecturer, meaning she does no research. All she does is teach half of chem 4b each year, as well as supervise/write the chem 1A labs. Thus, she has a lot of extra time to focus on teaching, meaning she should be really good at it. Which she is! Her lecturing style is very clear, and she explains concepts really well, and is obviously super enthusiastic about teaching. She would go in on weekends to the lab to generate data that she would then use as examples in her lectures, bring in actual equipment to show the class, and knew a lot of people's names. Teaching style-wise, she is top-notch. Unfortunately, the lectures are nothing like the homework, which is nothing like the exams, which are nothing like lecture. Lectures were basically devoted to stating what various chemistry processes (chromatography, spectroscopy, etc) are, but not in-depth at all. Homework required very difficult, lengthy calculations that had never been discussed in lecture, and was a complete waste of time. It is all out of Harris, which is good, because the solutions manual has even-numbered problems as well (there was not a single person who actually did all the homework). They also came assigned with a TON of reading, which would be useful for professional chemists, but extraneous for the class. Then, exams were reminiscent of the ACT science section, where a flood of data is presented to you, and you have to quickly analyze it and answer hypothetical questions about it (with a few simple calculations). Unfortunately, many of the processes on the exams had never been covered in either homework or lecture. All in all, this class was very frustrating, because so much time in lecture was devoted to essentially useless information for an intro chem class, that we didn't really learn anything. If you are a chem major and Douskey is teaching this class, you don't really have a choice. The good news is that labs are really fun (chromatography, extraction, EDTA titrations), and grading usually isn't too harsh. Don't worry if you don't understand anything/feel like you haven't learned anything, because no one else understands it either. In short, Douskey is a mixed bag -- TERRIBLE homework that takes forever, exams that are unrelated to anything covered in lecture, and lectures that are interesting but seem to be full of fluff. The sad thing is, people only hate Douskey because of ther hw and exams; if she could make these better, she would be a very popular teacher...

She does not go over example problems, but gives lots of analytic problems for homework. My advice if your using Harris is to get the solution manual to help understand the stuff or expect to go to GSI office hours a lot. Homework was fair as were her midterms. But she was very nitpicky about answers and results in lots of lost points. My biggest complaint was her extra credit. She gave a lot of extra credit in the class for projects that weren't completely relevant to the course. It made the students who did well on the exams have a worse score due to the extra credit. She is a very helpful professor who you can learn from if you try.

The main thing that ticked me off was that she didnt post her annotated lecture slides on bspace. She only posted the blank ones which were of absolutely no help at all. The homework she assigned was fair. Mostly book problems, but a few supplements from stuff not covered in the book. but covered in lecture. Douskey was excited to teach and always came to class enthusiastic despite not a lot of people playing attention in lecture. SHe was most helpful during the special projects part of the class where she recommended a technique to do a portion of our project which ended up producing the best data we had for our project. Mad props to Douskey for her knowledge on potentiometric titrations...Advice for this class is not to study or depend too much on the previous years exams, because the topics differ from year to year. Keep in mind the stuff being covered in lecture or you might end up studying the wrong material.

Comment: Douskey's enthusiastic, yes. However, her enthusiasm doesn't always mean that the lecture material is relevant. You NEED to read the book if you want to stand a chance in this class -- going to lecture alone isn't going to cut it. It's very easy to underestimate the midterms and final, and they WILL bite you in the behind if you don't give this the same attention you'd give any other course.

Comment: Her lectures do not help you understand the material at all. However, you must go because the book for this class Harris: Quantitative Chemical Analysis is completely unintelligible and absolutely no help whatsoever. Basically the entire class lives in a fog where they don't understand anything until two days before the exam where they try to interpret her lecture slides which are poorly designed because she doesn't post the new ones with her annotations on it. Basically you are stuck with her anyway so you should hope you get a good GSI. Try to get an experienced one she uses the same GSIs every year. Its the greatest day every when Oxtoby problems are assigned.

Comment: Douskey is pretty hit-or-miss. I wasn't a very big fan. She's clearly knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the material, but doesn't really impart that information to the class very effectively in lecture. A couple of warnings: this was easily the most disorganized class I've taken so far. Absolutely no collaboration between the 4B professors and the 4A professors that taught the previous semester. One example: one of the labs in the manual was literally exactly the same (as in a direct photocopy) as one done the previous semester in 4A. They had to completely rework the lab assignment for three weeks: tons of bspace postings, where getting the relevant information to just be prepared for lab was a nightmare. Concentrate on lecture and not the homework assignments to prepare for tests. The homework assignments are much harder than the exams and about half of the material assigned for homework never shows up again. As I said, easily the most disorganized class I've taken.

Comment: She didn't teach much for Chem4B and most of the studying was self-study out of the Harris book or were based on the lab manual and lab procedures, but her tests were fair and covered the main concepts that came out of lab. Her lecture slides that she puts up are next to useless because she's always using her tablet and the things that she writes on the slides is not saved and put onto bspace as well.

Comment: The stuff she lectures about is only loosely related to the homework/midterms. It's mostly just interesting tangents/details. Her midterms are pretty basic -- lots of problems similar to homework/lab stuff, although they do tend to have random conceptual questions that aren't specifically learned, but you just sort of have to pick up on. Super helpful and has a very interesting sense of humor. And she listens to The White Stripes. Pretty awesome prof.

Comment: Okay professor, although some people really didn't like her... Her exams are ridiculously easy, which is bad (high curve). She doesn't seem to care too much about her lectures; they're very basic and won't teach you anything. Read the textbook to gain better understanding of 4B material. She's helpful when it comes to midterm review for office hours, but regularly, she can't answer questions that the book doesn't know. Overall, she was okay. Chem 4B was much more fun with Prof. Moretto once he came in for the electrochem topics.

Comment: Very clear lecturer. She's adept with integrating demos into lecture and her teaching philosophy of having us think critically as scientists sets the tone for the class. A lot of the material covered was analytical-based and got us thinking about experimental design. I only wish she hadn't made her exams so easy--a lower average is in some ways better, because it ensures a more fair curve.
