Comment: Altieri actually only lectured about twice the whole semester--the rest were guest speakers, as well as the two awesome GSIs (Albie and Justin). Field trips put all the lectures into perspective and let you see actual urban gardens around the Bay Area. Guest speakers from all different aspects of urban ag and food policy pulled it all together. Gardening lab was hands-on really fun and relaxing (and you get to harvest vegetables for free!). Midterm was really long and difficult, but no final exam--just a final project. (They might change the format of exams and stuff next semester!)

Comment: The class I've learned the most in thus far at Cal. Pertinent readings, super informative lectures with some great guest lecturers, awesome field experience throughout the semester. Altieri is walking knowledge, he's just kind of grumpy. Houston is the best GSI you'll get -- he might not seem approachable but he's just a no-bullshit kinda guy...which I think is ideal for someone grading me. I legitimately learned how to write a solid research paper from editing/revising mine a million times with Houston. Take this class!!
