Comment: I am not sure what's going on with this class. They don't teach any of the two topic well (probability and discrete math). Berkeley should stop offering this class and change the requirement to one semester of discrete math and one semester of probability.

Comment: Amazing professor. Wagner could probably explain the most difficult concepts in computer science to someone in junior high. He is crystal clear, extremely helpful to anyone and starts each class off with a joke. The assignments and exams are difficult, but that's to be expected from this class anyway.

Comment: Wagner is a GREAT teacher. He is really enthusiastic in class, and really does his best to make sure you understand the concepts he talks about. A really really excellent teacher, by far the best I've had at Berkeley so far. I personally did not think the exams and homework were too difficult, but he was very fair about everything. Always very helpful at office hours.

Comment: Wagner is an extremely enthusiastic professor who really cares about both his students and the material he's teaching. He tries to be as fair as possible, and when he wrote an exam that was far too difficult for the class, he admitted it and said he'd correct it. Just an overall great experience with Wagner.

Comment: I never fell asleep in his lectures despite the lack of rest I was getting because he was so engaging. I was pretty impressed by his skilled in taking in-class questions and getting to the heart of the confusion. He is consistently on Piazza and often writes multi-paragraph long, thorough answers. Also, he is also very patient and never condescending to even impudent students. In short, Wagner is a wonderful pedagogically and as a person. My favorite professor so far.

Comment: Wagner is definitely enthusiastic and a great lecturer. However, the way he ran the course wasn't very good. The exams were super easy or super vague, making silly mistakes a big factor in how your grades turned out. The projects were way too strictly graded - you missed points for something you didn't know you should write about. Homework was fair and interesting, and lecture was good. TAs were also generally responsive on Piazza.

Comment: Wagner by far tops the ranks in helping out students on Piazza and his enthusiasm is unbounded. The material was fascinating, but the assignments and exams were poorly executed. The exams were either way too easy, or way too difficult, and most of the questions were very vague. Assignments were also a pain and very harshly graded.

Comment: Overrated. This class is an interesting overview of security but is executed poorly. Wagner is enthusiastic, but his lectures are simplistic and don't cover everything you need to know. Homework is actually pretty difficult because we barely learn anything in class, and then when it comes to applying concepts, you're pretty lost. Projects are irritating and involve really low level hexidecimal garbage and stupid tricks, although they do help you learn the material. A lot of it involves x86 architecture, which Wagner did not cover AT ALL in class, and you really need to know it inside out to complete these projects. Exams sucked. The first one was a joke with a mean of 94%, so to compensate the 2nd midterm was unfair, time pressured, and too difficult. This class just feels like a crapshoot, and networks really should be a prerequisite for this class as 1/3 of it is about network security, so you will probably feel lost without taking that class.

Comment: A wonderful professor. Extremely enthusiastic about the course and very good at explaining the material. He was a stickler about due dates though. I had a problem getting the file onto their server to turn in and was late by about 10 minutes and lost 10%. Other than that, great professor though.

Comment: Wagner is a fantastic lecturer and explains material well. His homework is on the slightly easier side in that you don't learn the material extremely well from them. You learn it pretty well though, but you should practice more to really become awesome at 170. What was horrible about this class was the exams. Truly poor exams. To get an A it's about not making dumb mistakes. No question challenges you much on midterms, it's like you know it or you don't sort of. The final was also horrible. 12 design your own algorithm questions + 4 other questions in 3 hours gave you absolutely no time to really think. It was just a scramble of writing down the algos you could think of fast to get through everything. You will probably learn well from him, but grades may not come out the way you want it. He also taught us trivial machine learning in the last 2 weeks of class which was kinda a waste (too basic).

Comment: Wagner is really friendly, empathetic, and curves relatively leniently. That being said, his lectures basically went over the textbook’s material (the textbook is extremely concise and readable), so they didn’t add too much value (except towards the end of the semester). Wagner was super, super responsive on Piazza, often given long detailed explanations of answers to questions, which was great. The problem sets were really long (12+hours/week). That being said, I heard that they’re even longer with other professors. Wagner’s 2 midterms were very straightforward and easy - almost no proofs. However, this did mean that there was less of a curve; his final was challenging and difficult but not painful. As another note, future versions of Wagner’s 170 are likely to contain ~2-3 lectures worth of material on machine learning at the end (not in the textbook). If you’re taking 188/189, this material is rather redundant.
