Comment: Colleen was super enthusiastic and made lectures easy to follow. She cared about her students and is always willing to help. The exams are tough, but fair. The homework was often pretty hard, but it was graded on completion.

Comment: Colleen did a great job of teaching us the basics of what we needed to know and was extremely enthusiastic about the subject matter. That said, I still don't think I would have survived the course anyway without my awesome UGSI. I spent long hours in the lab, but I thought the course was interesting and rewarding overall.

Comment: Super enthusiastic professor! Material isn't too bad, it's very hit or miss in terms of understanding the subject. Really enjoyed the first half of the class, but it got a little boring toward the end. Exams were open book and really were not that bad, despite a somewhat low average. Homework assignments were a little tedious and boring. Great class to take if you're interested in CS.

Comment: Her exams are really hard. Final was intended to discourage many students. She is an enthusiastic teacher but doesn't seem to know the material too well. She would often ask students if anyone knew the answer to the question that another student asked her. The class was too fast-paced. There was not too much time to absorb the materials you just learned because you had to work on the project next day. After few days, there was a midterm, homework was due next day and the final. Too Crazy class, she should've redesigned the coursework to fit 16 weeks of materials into 8 weeks of class schedule.

Comment: Colleen is incredibly passionate and dedicated to teaching. She is far better in a smaller environment (as a TA), in fact she's probably one of the best educators in Berkeley as a GSI; however, she has room to grow as a Lecturer. No doubt she will rise to the top of the Lecturers in Berkeley in no time flat, but for now she has some growth. She has difficulty commanding an entire Lecture Hall with the same focus she can lead a discussion section. Still, I recommend taking a class with her anytime.

Comment: Colleen is an awesome lecturer, and she is always willing to answer questions, but I could not go to enough of her OHs. She is very enthusiastic, which was great, but the material took some time to digest, which was hard sometimes, as labs were cryptic and hard to follow. She did her best to respond to lab questions and the discussion group online. Lab hours were nice, but it was hard to wake up at 8 and run to soda. Also, the lab experience really depends on the TA. mine was ok, but he didnt take the time to do mini-reviews or mini-lectures; it was pure lab time. That was the hard part. My grades were not bad, but they could have been better: tests were graded very harshly; it's easy to lose points as some questions are weighted extremely harshly and projects and tests took a long time to grade.

Comment: Projects were really fun, labs not so much. Colleen has a lot of enthusiasm, but I didn't feel like she answered questions particularly well. Exams were really annoying: they seemed really easy but there were so many ways to lose points that you could feel great coming out of an exam and still get a mediocre score on a straight scale. Overall, I like Colleen but I do not recommend this course. I would've learned a lot better from being able to ask questions to a lecturer than by working my way through vague lab exercises, and I thought exams were poorly done. Also, don't read any textbook, they assign tons of reading that's never tested.

Comment: Great lecturer (although we didn't get too many in this lab course), and very very very enthusiastic. She cared a lot about our feedback and tries to make sure everyone understands. I agree though, that the exam gradings were (annoyingly) nitpicky. At least the projects were pretty cool.

Comment: She gets really excited when she lectures, and her lectures are informative and chock-full of sample code...but that doesn't mean lectures are always interesting. I found the lab-based aspect of this class to be great in that if you finish the labs within the 3-hour lab section (usually doable if you have prior Java knowledge and don't mess around), then there was very little homework (with the exception of projects). However, not everyone can sit through 3 hours of coding (many lab pairs chose to put off some of the labs until right before the midterms). It's important to find a great project group if you want a good grade / you don't want to code 2-4 students' share of project work. Some of the project specs and exam problems are confusing, but the worst part of this class was how long it took to grade everything (i.e. each project took a month to grade, grading complaints weren't resolved by the end of the semester). I learned a ton and gained many useful skills in this course... I just hope that the next time 61BL is offered, students won't have to go through the administrative frustration our semester had to endure.

Comment: Colleen clearly really wants to teach and tries hard in lecture, but ultimately this class is not a very good class for a few reasons. First, there aren't homework assignments (or very few, most students finish in lab). As a student, I'm happy that there's less work, but I know that to get fully comfortable with Data Structures and various Searching & Sorting Algorithms, you simpily need practice. I learned a lot in CS61A mostly because of the difficult homework. Exams are also very easy. Projects in this class are good and teach a lot, especially working in larger groups. They're not too difficult but they're not easy either (except for the first project). Overall, I'd recommend taking 61B with Shewchuck over 61BL

Comment: The projects are challenging but doable. Since there is only one hour of lecture a week, they are usually too fast to understand the material. The labs are well done, and the conceptual and coding exercises in lab give you a better foundation of data structures. Daily quizzes are a good benchmark, though they are not that in-depth. Exams are mostly straightforward although a bit too open-ended. The class is graded on an absolute scale, which is nice. 61BL is good class for someone who learns by doing through trial and error.

Comment: Professor Lewis is very energetic and very cheerful. However, the most annoying thing about this class is the exam. All her midterms and final are worded poorly and deduct lots of points for mistakes you make and does not award you for the things you do right.
