Comment: I absolutely loved Pedersen, though I'm not sure if his final curve was that fair. I wish he showed us what the avg for the final was and what percentage bracket you would have to fall under to receive a specific grade. I loved the way he taught. even though I got a B in this class, I loved Pedersen and he made 3A really enjoyable and doable because even though I never paid attention in lecture, if you do all his practice problems 2-3x you'll understand how to take his midterms. His midterms are very fair and I dreaded taking ochem because of what I heard, but Pedersen and the way he teaches really made my 3A experience amazing. He's so knowledgable and just wants you to apply things you learn to your every day life. Probably one of my most favorite classes at Berkeley.

Comment: He's a great professor, especially for a subject so notoriously difficult, but sometimes notes from his lectures were a little hard to follow when reviewing, especially when you dont write down most of what he says. No real assignments, just practice problems that are all taken from old tests and midterms, so when you get to the tests, nothing looks too unfamiliar, but difficult none the less.

Comment: Absolutely fantastic professor. Lectures were easy to follow, very thorough, and at times actually kind of hilarious. Pedersen made the subject fascinating and the material much easier to understand. DEFINITELY buy the practice exam/key set and do all the problem sets before the exams. Go through all of them and getting a good grade in the course is pretty straightforward!

Comment: Well as many others have said...as long as you do the problem sets you will do fine. I suggest signing up for a study group, it helps you organize and review what you went over in lecture and it never hurts to look over your notes. I received a lot of helpful tips from my study group leader. I am not going to lie, I love OChem (hated Chem 1A) it is fun and much more interesting and easy to comprehend(probably b/c Pedersen is an amazing instructor!) I almost got perfect on both midterms and got an A in the course. My only tips would be go to EVERY lecture+do the problem sets+attend a study group (that's what I did) I also suggest going to his OH...I couldn't attend but I am sure the would have been helpful and fun. Good Luck!

Comment: Pedersen was an amazing ochem professor! Honestly, I was so afraid of organic chemistry before taking this course, but he made lectures clear, was willing to answer questions in class, and even showed personality by telling amusing stories. His exams are easy to prepare for if you review his problem sets. If you have to take organic chemistry, I'd definitely recommend trying to be in his class.

Comment: Guys, Pedersen is the real deal. Everything you've heard is true. He's a wonderful professor who gives you a clear understanding of the material, assigns relevant and useful problem sets, and writes fair, if slightly tricky, tests. I struggled in Chem 1A, but under Pedersen's instruction, I've done extremely well (Read: A) and really started enjoy chemistry. You don't even need to buy the textbook, to be honest. If you do the problem sets, you will succeed. Apart from all of this, the guy is a total sweetheart. Don't miss the chance to take organic chem with him. I'm already looking forward to 3B.

Comment: Pedersen is very straight forward. Make sure to go to lectures and pay attention because his tests are only based on what he said in lecture. The book is practically useless for his class. He teaches what he wants and not what is in the book. Make sure to do the problem sets and this class is pretty easy. His teaching style is good. He's well organized and uses the chalk board so he goes at a pretty good pace. He can be a bit boring and monotone but overall he is a very good teacher.

Comment: Pedersen is great - he knows his material, is enthusiastic about teaching, and made 8 am lecture bearable. His exams can be kind of difficult, but he provides the school store with a book full of his previous exams and another filled with the answers. I cannot stress how helpful these books are. They easily made the difference between passing and failing for me. In a class where your grade is based solely upon exams, the problem sets he assigns for those books are a lifesaver.

Comment: I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed Pedersen. Some commented on his "monotone" voice, but I feel it's more that he has a more casual, "been there done that" approach to chemistry which is actually sort of entertaining and makes the problems seem less scary or formal. (My friends and I joke that he's the Cowboy of Chemistry. Take his class and you'll understand) His tests are ridiculously well-written and fair. Essentially the problem set book is like your golden ticket to passing and even doing well in the class. He's an extremely humble guy and you can tell he went into the field because of his passion. I like how on a weekly basis he mentions how he's rarely in a bad mood. I've never personally been to office hours but friends who have say he's super approachable, which I'd guess based on lecture. He also can easily throw in real-world examples into his lectures and problems. All in all the initial reviews on NC made me hesitant, but after his class I've come to love chem so much that I'm going to take 3B for fun (seriously!).

Comment: The best 3A professor BY FAR (if you want to truly learn the material). He is a little dry in lecture, but he is VERY CLEAR in his lecture. He's BETTER than the textbook, and I even regretted buying the textbook at all. He cares a lot about his student (he actually gave up research to develop the curriculum for 3AL, that's how much he cares) and wants students to succeed. The tests are harder than Frechet because he focuses on learning the material while Frechet and Viernes, more or less, follow strict memorization of mechanism/reactions. He also provide most of his hw from his past exams, so you get A LOT of problems. Over summer, it is about 50-80 problem PS every 2-4 days. So there is a lot of work. But his tests are fair, but not easy. Office hour is a MUST. It is practically a class on its own. Pederson goes over how to do the problems from his Problem Sets (or past exams), so it is very very helpful. Also, he is really nice and caring after class. In short, he seems to be born to teach OChem. I do wish he would consider teaching Inorganic Chemistry, because I really enjoyed his OChem course. (oh yeah, I also dropped Vollhardt to take Chem 3B with him in Spring)

Comment: This class is super easy. The pre-labs simply consist of copying down information from your lab textbook and from online, and the labs themselves are extremely tedious but way easier than any chem 1a lab in terms of the amount of material that you actually have to know. The only hard topic was NMR, but you don't actually have to know it that well to do well on the lab final. Pedersen is very picky about observations though, so make sure that you write down everything that you see or do in lab to receive full credit for your lab grades. As an earlier reviewer said, Pedersen is a super dry lecturer, so make sure to bring coffee or something to eat to entertain you, otherwise you will fall asleep.

Comment: A LOT BETTER THAN CHEM 1A because this class is ACTUALLY USEFUL. You learn the basic lab techniques- TLC, NMR, recrystallization, taking boiling points, etc. Also much more relevant to 1A than to 3A, although you need 3A knowledge when it comes to the substitution lab, for instance. Pedersen was a clear and experienced but boring lecturer, so make sure you get coffee before you show up to class so you don't end up like me, who often fell asleep in lecture and ended up having to read the textbook, which explained things he went over in lecture but just less compactly. Lab exam was easy, and even if you didn't do well, most of your grade depended on the labs, so all will be fine.

Comment: What a fantastic lab professor. I did not particularly enjoy 1AL, but I LOVED Chem 3AL. The labs are very applied, and you learn actual organic chemistry lab techniques that are practical for research and lab work. The pre-labs are all very short, except for the first one which takes forever. We only had three worksheets and three quizzes all semester, which was very generous. The ICLR and lab exam were both jokes, very easy, but definitely do study. As for Pedersen specifically, I really, really liked him. He is incredibly clear while lecturing, and his lectures explain a lot. You must go to lab lecture, it is required for understanding the labs. My only complaint is that Pedersen rushed through NMR; even though we spent three lectures on it, NMR is complex and we were rushing badly. Study NMR and know it inside and out for the lab exam, and for 3BL.

The labs were very easy and you have ample time to do them! The lab write-ups are limited to 2 pages double-spaced so they don't take very long at all. They are graded in detail but that's because the GSI's follow a set rubric so it's fair. No quizzes in labs either! Very relieved about that. :) Oh and Pedersen is super nice and almost fatherly. Comment: The 2009 Summer lab lectures were coordinated through an online system. I thought this was really helpful in helping students learn the required lab procedures. Lab lectures aren't webcasted usually during the fall/spring semesters so this was a great benefit. It let me watch it when I felt the most attentive and if I didn't quite understand anything, I could easily go back and review. The labs are a hit and miss for me. The summer labs go by very fast and it all became a blur after a couple of weeks in. Lab reports are tedious and take a good chunk of your time studying the lecture material. Hope for a easy-going GSI!

Comment: I placed a relatively negative comment on the "Helpfulness" because the course is online [lab is live, lectures are online]. There are GSI around the clock office hour, but most of the attention are placed in Chem 3A. Although you are welcomed to ask about Chem 3AL or Chem 3A, most of the time are spend discussing 3A materials. So while the resources are available, they are harder to get access to. Pedersen is a great lecturer. But he is a little dry at times [I audited his Chem 3AL during Fall and yeah]. Therefore, the online structure allows you to view the lecture whenever it is most convenient for you, so it definitely helps. But you do miss his funnier quirky comments about frozen frogs and quacking ducks that he has during the school year.

Comment: Pedersen is a great teacher! When I took Chem 3A with him, I was skeptical about his "awesomeness" that all my peers advocated for. However, upon finishing the course, I really see what they meant. His lecture notes are EXTREMELY helpful on the exams and most of the homework assignments, so it's really important that you show up to class every day and take good notes. This class for me proved that you really get out what you put in. Make sure to write down things that sound important (or don't, because they might be). He doesn't follow any textbook, but the textbook is a good resource if you want to really brush up on a concept or learn it in a little bit more detail. The other key to success in this class is PRACTICING PROBLEMS. Organic chem is a subject that you can't just learn by reading about it or listening to somebody talk about it; you really have to DO it yourself (or at least I did). Also, the curve is pretty generous, and if you perform about average on his exams, you are set up for a B-. Do above average within SD, you're looking at a B/B+. Do at SD or above, you've landed yourself an A. Best of luck in o-chem! Oh, one more thing: Pedersen is an amazing human being and I wish there were not only more [lower-div science] professors at Berkeley like him, but I wish there were more people in the world like him. Make sure to check out his cute meme page! http://www.quickmeme.com/Cute-Pedersen/?upcoming ...Wait! Last thing! His office hours, I hear, are really helpful as he goes over some homework problems that students say were difficult or didn't understand. I, unfortunately, was only able to go once in my whole year of o-chem due to scheduling conflicts (he's pretty inflexible about his office hours; they are at a set time). But after that one time I went, I WISH I was able to attend more often. I really hope you enjoy o-chem as much as I did :)

I felt like I knew him even though we never had an actual conversation. He is just amazing and wants you to learn not memorize and regurgitate the material. Take OChem from him...you won't regret it! TIPS: do the problem sets at least twice...always review your lecture notes before you do each problem set (he usually covers 2 lectures per problem set), Try to go to his OH and SLC study groups, learn the material and teach it to others, enjoy( this is not Chem 1a so have fun!) Comment: The man, the legend. The best professor you will have for any of your science/premed lower div classes. If you've had him for 3A, you know the drill, he just makes you figure out more of the mechanisms independently. If you didn't have him for 3A, know that he teaches directly to the test and take the time to get used to his style. DO THE WEEKLY PROBLEM SETS. There are some time consuming ones, but understanding them is key to acing the midterms and final. My strategy: I reviewed my notes first! Then, the weekend after they're posted, I went quickly through the problem sets and skipped any problems I couldn't figure out with my notes. The weekend before the midterm, I went back to these "hard" problems and worked carefully through them using notes, the internet, and the solutions. I got an A, and I can't thank Pedersen enough for the experience I had in this class.

Comment: Surprisingly enough, after bombing both my midterms....I think Pederson is a great professor. He forces you to learn the basics on your own so you can learn the material better. Did well on the final by studying his notes and practice problem sets (key to your success) and passed the class. Take the class with him and study and you won't regret it.

Comment: Very clear with lecture and his exams follow very closely the format of his practice tests from the past. He does not throw trick questions. All his questions are meant to test your understanding of the material, so there are definitely no curve balls or anything. Although clearly passionate about what he teaches, Pederson possesses a very monotone voice, which can sometimes make listening to lecture very difficult, but if you listen to everything he says and take good notes, you'll rock the exams. They are very straight forward and fair.

Comment: Professor Pedersen is a great instructor, as he can explain the concepts efficiently and clearly. His focus really is to make you understand organic chemistry in an applicable sense, and it has definitely helped with my other classes. The tests are very straightforward and follow the format of his past exams. I definitely recommend buying the exam books, as they are the best way to study. The textbook was a helpful supplement at times, but it was not a necessary purchase.

Comment: Go to office hours! He helps you understand Suggested Problems and helps with concepts. His tests are not a surprise at all, since you've practiced all semester. He is such a passionate and wonderful guy. I never missed his 8AM lectures because he made me more interested in O-Chem. The concepts from 3B are harder to grasp than 3A in my opinion, but with Pedersen, you are safe. He is a great, compassionate, loving and funny teacher. You're in good hands.

Comment: Pedersen is an extremely capable lecturer. He explains concepts in detail to the extent that he will test you on it, and it is consequently always very clear what to spend time studying for. Problem sets, as others have said, are very relevant and very worthwhile to do-- in fact, I doubt it is possible to do well in Pedersen's classes without doing them. Exams are very fair. Trick questions are exceedingly rare, and even the synthesis problems are very doable with some time. That being said, test curves are still generous due to people not studying hard enough. Do the problem sets, keep track of problems worth redoing before exams, and you should do fine. To be fair, lectures can feel long and monotonous, even for me (and I love 3B to death). It is often difficult to write down everything Pedersen says, and the lecture might not be webcasted, so make a friend in case you miss something.

Comment: I got an A in this class, but only after putting in 500+ hours of work (yes, I calculated it). I did every problem in all of his problem sets at least twice. This class isn't impossible, but you have to dedicate a lot of time to it if you want to do well.

CHEM 3BL (Spring 2014)

Comment: Pretty straightforward course. If you put in a decent amount of work, then you can get a good grade. Too bad Pedersen doesn't give out A+... NMR go to GSI office hours. For labs, be meticulous and write ALL observations possible, even the volume of water used to wash a tube.

Comment: Chem 3BL was easier than Chem 3B. The NMR/mass spectrometry assignments can be difficult, but are doable if you go to the SLC or GSI office hours for help. Grading depends on your GSI. The ICLR and lab exam were pretty straightforward, although there were a few tricky questions.

Comment: Pedersen isn't bad. If you had him for 3AL, then 3BL is exactly the same. The lab report grading really depends on the GSI; if you have a strict GSI who follows the rubric line by line (meaning, he doesn't give points for implied answers, only explicit responses) like me, you'll likely have a harder time. Either way, office hours are the way to go. The lab exam was like a compilation of both 3AL and 3BL, but was a break relative to the difficulty of the lab reports themselves.

Comment: I had to go to OH for each lab, the questions were just so hard. I'm sure that if you put in the effort you will get an A, but just don't slack off on getting help in OH. 3BL is much harder than 3AL, so be prepared to do twice the amount of work.

Comment: This lab is so much harder than 3AL. Don't expect it to be at all similar, the lab reports are really tricky. I'm in a monday lab and i don't recommend it because if you have questions it's hard to get them answered before the lab report is due unless you start the lab report right after you finish the lab.
