MATH 10B (Spring 2013)

Comment: Pretty straight forward. Reasonable tests and presents information like all math classes with chalk and writing on the board. Section is most important because you actually practice. Weekly quizzes keep you on your game and are worth a good amount. Studying for them is important. For sections I recommend Jason F cool dude and really helpful. Not like the other GSI's who just hand out worksheets and you work in groups. He re-presents the info and asks any questions does things as a group going over questions about homework, quizzes or anything in general.

Comment: Evans was a great teacher! He was funny, nice and explained math concepts well. Definitely made the Math 10 series better, esp. after taking 10A with Sturmfels. He went over a lot of sample problems in class and the assignments and tests were reasonable. I would recommend studying for tests by doing a lot of practice problems over and over.

Comment: Very enthusiastic about his lecture material. A great class to take as well as a great professor to take it with! Although final was a bit hard, it was curved appropriately (and generously I'd say) so the grades were good in the end :)

Comment: Evans is an enthusiastic lecturer and he kept me engaged during class for the most part. The midterms were fair but the final exam was difficult. He really takes student feedback into account so talk to him in office hours! Good Math 10B professor overall

Comment: I thought the material was difficult, as it was mostly new to me. The midterms were quite easy, and the homework was doable, but the final was incredibly hard, as were quizzes in section with many tricky problems. Evans is a great teacher, funny, helpful, and approachable in office hours, though he can go off topic and gets really sweaty/out of breath. I was very glad this was my last math class at Cal, and I ended up with a B+ after failing a few quizzes and probably the final as well.

Comment: Evans was amazing. Incredibly enthusiastic and funny in class, and very helpful both in lecture and in office hours. Comment: Great class. Evans made multi-var very interesting and he enjoys proofs and explain the bolts and pieces. Tests made you think outside the box, but that's really how this class should be approached. Do more problems. and try to understand before moving on. delta/espilon was spooky...and on the test. My GSI was awesome, but I got behind.

Comment: Evans was a great professor. It is difficult to rate him according to the difficulty of his exams and quizzes because math 53 is by nature a hard class. I had a lot of trouble with the second midterm but the final wasn't too bad. The concepts at the end of the class are really tough so the questions on the final were not "easy", but they were really fair and he didn't throw any crazy twists in.

Comment: Didn't notice how awesome he was until I had a horrible math professor. He's engaging in lectures and tells you short funny stories when the class is suddenly really quiet. He always scares you by making the exam sound super hard to make you study, but in reality they're very fair. Explains curl in terms of swirling beer. Totally awesome prof

Comment: Prof Evans was honestly the best Math Professor that I have up until now. He goes over material with enthusiasm, maybe a bit too much. Really good sense of humor I would say. His lecture makes the materials covered in book crystal clear. Sometimes, the book is not the best read. Advise to go to lecture, because he like to base his exams on his lectures.

Comment: Prof Evans is honestly one of the best math teachers I've ever had. I didn't even need to go to discussion because his lectures were so clear. If you study, his exams aren't hard, they are just graded really harshly (make an arithmetic mistake and you lose almost all your points from then on). Take with Evans if you get the chance.

Comment: Professor Evans is the best. He explains all the concepts quickly but he has a plan and if you stick with it you'll be fine. I made the mistake of taking this class my first semester at Cal and I was not ready to give the time commitment that this class deserves. The homework was easy and doable, he does this so you get free points because the tests will be hard. The tests for m were fair but long, the steps you had to do were too long for me and I was slow so often times I didn't quite finish. He likes questions where you have to do proofs. He was a very funny man and although I did horrible it was a good course.

Comment: For some reason I fell asleep in his class all the time (or just didn't go), but honestly, that was probably my fault and not his. His exams were rather fair (although his final was ridiculously easy), and he was definitely excited about the material (*too* excited sometimes, I might say!). I never went to his office hours (didn't exactly feel that would be appropriate since I slept in class...) so I have no idea how helpful he was, but at least he was good at answering questions after class. Overall a decent instructor; not outstanding but pretty good.

Comment: Prof Evans is enthusiastic about the subject matter and his lectures are pretty good. Lectures are very fast-paced though since there's a lot of material covered in the course. The last part of the course on Stoke's and the Divergence theorem are the hardest and its usually covered in the last 1-2 weeks of the class. Prof Evans usually includes one proof question on the final (Fundamental Thm for line integrals, Stoke's, Green's or Div Thm), most of the other questions are standard homework type questions with a couple of slightly harder questions.

Comment: I'm not going to lie, his tests are pretty darn hard but that doesn't make me like him less. I feel like I learned more in this math class than any other math classes. Prof Evans is a REALLY, REALLY, REALLY good teacher, possibly the best I've ever had. He is clear, concise and enthusiastic. I really like how his lectures are set up, more proof based and less example based. I feel like that's really nice because the proof part is the hardest and one can always look at the book for examples. He's also really funny. I hated math and toward the end of this semester his class became one of my favorite classes.

MATH 53 (Fall 2010)

Overall Assignments Exams Helpfulness Enthusiasm
92 84 50 70 100

Comment: His lectures are very clear and logical, but he does tend to emphasize proofs more than other professors. The homework he assigns is relatively easy (low, odd-numbered problems), but his exams are much harder.

MATH 53 (Fall 2010)

Overall Assignments Exams Helpfulness Enthusiasm
91 71 86 75 92

Comment: Assignments are pretty straightforward, but they don't expect them to prepare you for midterms. I did pretty well, I'm pretty math/sciency and never used office hours so use that to qualify my ratings. I didn't think he was hilarious but apparently a lot of other people did.

MATH 53 (Fall 2010)

Comment: He is one of the funniest professors you can get. He tries to lighten the mood by making jokes all throughout class that build on previous jokes. He makes fun of English majors; it's great. His exams are pretty hard though so be prepared for that. Homework is pretty easy but the downside is that you aren't expecting the hard problems on the exams.

MATH 53 (Fall 2010)

Overall Assignments Exams Helpfulness Enthusiasm
83 84 63 84 85

Comment: Very clear lecture style, and the old-school projectors are great for being able to watch him go through a problem step by step. His tests are a bit difficult, but the GSIs seem to grade pretty easily and the assignments and quizzes are pretty simple.

MATH 53 (Fall 2010)

Overall Assignments Exams Helpfulness Enthusiasm
77 74 45 91 91

Comment: Evans was an incredibly clear and understandable lecturer, always explaining the material graphically or in terms of physical phenomena. His tests were difficult and graded harshly, for you can only get a maximum of 50% of the points if you don't have the correct final answer (at least he says in the syllabus; in actuality, the GSI graders were more generous). Also, he emphasizes the proofs (show the particle moves in a circle, etc) more than other Math 53 professors. His tests usually contain a visualization component that makes a problem easier, so being able to visualize 3d space helps. Studying for his tests by doing his practice problems is a must, but can only help you so much. To do well, you need to be good at math and able to quickly think through the "stretch" problems he throws at you. Definitely do well on the GSI quizzes; you'll need that 20% quiz/homework grade to boost your overall grade.

Comment: He does not take questions in class, probably because his lectures are so thorough.Evans can be described as sort of a "mad old professor". Comment: As he describes himself, "I'll go at the speed of light for the first half of this course so that I'll have more time to go over the important topics. After a week this [his lecture material] will all seem extremely easy." Dr. Evans is more theoretical in his approach than from other more quantitative professors (or so I have heard). He's direct: he will churn out all theorems in a highly logical flow, a sign of a good math professor.

Comment: Professor Evans was certainly enthusiastic and made sure to tailor the curriculum to his own interests. However, he is of the opinion that even an applied math class should include no programming, so it ended up being more "pure" than expected. Proofs were definitely favored over applications, especially on the exams. The assignments were usually very easy and built confidence, as the professor intended them to. The exams were certainly harder but not impossible. He seemed to get a little annoyed about people over-utilizing his office hours.
