Comment: She's a great overall professor, I was just not a fan of the exams. Often I would get points deducted off for some additional sentence that I knew, but did not know I needed to go into that much detail. And since exams are designed so that you pretty much are rushing to even finish, the opportunity cost of writing that extra sentence is way too high. So essentially, you will do a lot better if you write fast. Otherwise, you're unfortunately slightly screwed. Also, I'm still not a fan of grades by section...mostly because I somehow always end up in the section with the highest raw scores...Otherwise, she's a great lecturer, brings lots of energy into every class she teaches, is very active on Piazza (though not every response is very helpful), and assignments are fair.

Comment: Econ 1 isn't as hard as it is sometimes made out to be. Exam grading can be a little arbitrary, but doing past exam questions and reading over key points in Prof. Olney's textbooks will help a lot. Make sure you stay on top of the work and go to lectures (iClicker questions count for points), and it will be very possible to get a very good grade!

Comment: OLNEY: Her strength is her enthusiasm. It's clear that she enjoys teaching Econ 1, but she can be a little intimidating. She is not the most approachable person, but her lectures are really clear. She wrote the book so a lot of what she says is word for word what is in the book which makes lecture dull. She requires iClickers and doesn't allow laptops which annoyed me personally. I walked away with a pretty good understanding of basic economic principles (even if my grade doesn't show this). EXAMS: There are tons of practice exams BUT there are no potential answers provided online. This is really frustrating because you cannot get feedback on your answers. It helps you know what to expect and practice time management, but it doesn't help you identify where the gaps in your understanding are. If you want feedback, you must go to a GSI office hour and they can review your answer with you. They tend to be unwilling to go over an entire exam so you are always in the dark about some questions. You can also ask on piazza, but you don't get an idea of what things earn what credit. Overall, the exams are the kind were getting a 6/8 is very easy if you have been paying attention in class but very difficult to get an 8/8 on. This is not because the material is hard but because the expectations are unclear. Even when you ask about points getting docked off later, the GSI will often be unable to clearly explain why you lost a point. Also, there's a lot of grading issues between GSIs. What earns credit on an exam graded by one GSI won't earn credit on another GSI's exam. ASSIGNMENTS: Problem sets are good. They help you understand what is important and are definitely linked to the exams. There are essays on each set which is kind of annoying, but they're easy to do. Additionally, there's an opportunity to make up missed points with clickers. GRADING: Exam grading is still bizarre, but the overall course grading is even worse. It is curved by GSI in the sense that there are no point cut offs for the whole course. Instead, Olney says she looks for trends/splits in that GSI's spreadsheets and assigns grades based on that. It seems like this is really arbitrary and it means you don't know how you're performing during the semester. I think it would be more effective to just have clear cutoffs. SECTION: My section GSI was very uncommitted to the course and did not have a solid grasp of the material. The sections were pointless because they did not help me understand the material any better, but I was obligated to attend since section attendance was part of the course grade. Since the GSI for your section grades all your assignments, having a bad GSI really impacts your grade and your experience in the class. Transfer if possible! MISC: Her final exam includes an essay due during dead week which gets in the way of reviewing for the exam. I think the essay is supposed to give an idea of real world applications, but it felt unnecessary since the bulk of the essay's content came from non-course material. This class has the best piazza I have seen so far. Tons of instructor answers!

Comment: Awesome professor. You learn so much from this one course. Make sure you put in a lot of time if you want to get an A. It's ok if you haven't taken AP Econ. Just work extra hard for the first portion of the course and you'll be on the same level as everyone else for Macro.

Comment: Incredible professor. Nothing but good things to say about her. Her exams are notorious for being difficult and to get that A- or A, you have to push yourself hard. But she puts in a ton of passion and enthusiasm into the class and all her GSI's seem to follow in her lead. Yes everyone wants the A so they can boost their GPA/boost their chances of getting into Haas, but what she does is capture the basics of economics and spins a tale in the sense that it becomes a subject that you yourself become passionate about and attempt to apply the lessons from class into the real world. If you truly put in as much effort as Olney does into this class, you will be one of the star students. Absolutely fantastic experience with her and as someone who came into college having taken economics in high school, you learn so much more from her and she preps you for the difficulties and trials that will arise in your upper division economics courses if you pursue those. Definitely one of the best professors at Cal and a must have if you truly want to learn introductory economics and want to establish a solid foundation upon which to build.

Comment: Olney is an angel. I went to all of her office hours and she truly helped me a lot. Her lectures are awesome and she truly is a great and caring human being. My only dislike was her exams. They were all easy, yet huge point penalties were placed on questions (in my opinion). I constantly would only make minor mistakes and end up losing 20% of my exam grade. In the end, though, the final was easy and I almost aced it. Unfortunately, I got a B+ and missed an A- by only a handful of points :/. I still learned a lot though and hope to have her as my professor and my inspiration again in the future.

Comment: Olney is a great professor! I actually enjoyed all her lectures and did not fall asleep. The assignments were pretty easy and manageable. Go to your GSI's office hours right from the beginning of the semester. They grade your tests, so figure out how they like answers written! Im telling you right now, her exams are KILLER! I can honestly tell you I studied 25+ hours for each exam: rewatching all the lectures, redoing all homework, practice midterms(multiple times), etc. Even if you know every single concept the tests will be difficult. This is because the GSI's are super picky when grading. Even if you forget a single vocal word they will deduct 1/2 the points. Overall, her tests are really difficult, but I learned a lot and I am not confident in all the concepts taught in her class. Good luck and study hard!

Comment: Definitely my favorite professor! You should check out the online webcast videos and you will definitely love her! She is so charming talking about economics. Five problem sets are close-to-exam questions but they weigh soooooo small at the end and can be compensated by attendance to lecture. First exam is hard for me and the rest are easier. You will definitely learn a lot from her.

Comment: Professor Olney is great! She is extremely helpful during office hours (she has chairs in her office for students to sit in when there's a lot of people; and there certainly is right before midterms), and she even split the final into three different sections to allow the GSIs to have a lighter workload so it wouldn't run into Christmas. She's enthusiastic and easy to understand, and if you forgot how she explained something, you can always look it up; because it's webcasted! My only complaint was the difficulty of the exams, however it's nothing you can't prepare for.

Comment: I LOVE OLNEY!!! She's one of the best professors you'll ever find at Cal or anywhere. I came to this class with prior knowledge of economics, but she managed to bring fresh perspective to the material and point out gaps in my knowledge that I never knew were there. She makes the subject accessible for those with no prior exposure to econ. She has more than 20 years of teaching under her belt and it shows. She makes herself available, and is patient; no question is too 'dumb' for her. She gives credit where it's due. I've met very few educators as enthusiastic about their subject as she is. Her exams were challenging, but reasonable. There's lots of work and readings, but it's worth the effort to do well in class. Downsides: she's really popular (obviously) so classes fill up really fast. This class had 720 people in it... Not even funny. Phase I this class and go for office hours to get the most out of it.

Comment: If you have Olney for Intro to Econ, you're in for a treat. Not only does she know how to teach the material to students who have little to no Econ experience ( a rarity among professors), she's very enthusiastic about the material. Assignments, one due every other week, never take more than two hours to complete and points are pretty much free since we got extra credit from iClicker points. Tests are extremely fair. Comment: Prof. Olney is clearly passionate about economics, and she really wants her students to be able to apply the concepts in the real world. I can definitely read economics news better after taking her class. However, do NOT underestimate this class. Before the first midterm, you'll probably think this class is really easy. Once you get back you're first midterm, however, you'll realize how competitive this class is. You'll probably lose points for what you DON'T say. Comment: great lecturer, really gave a good, solid overview of the field of economics. very organized, very structured class. the only thing i didn't like were the harsh curves on the exams, but i think a lot of that had to do with the fact that lots of pre-haas people take this class and make the exams more about not making trivial mistakes instead of demonstrating a conceptual understanding of the material. don't get discouraged if you don't do well in this class, you probably learned a lot more than your grade actually reflects. your experience is also largely affected by the enthusiasm/preparedness of your gsi, but olney's lectures are worth going to every day as they are both engaging and informative.

Comment: This class made me decide to major in Econ. Olney's enthusiasm and application of Econ to the "real-world" was amazing. The class was probably a bit more difficult if you had no Econ background at all. I was able to keep up because I took AP in high school and passed the exams. I'm now in Macroeconomic Analysis Theory and I definitely use the knowledge I gained from Olney's class. The exams are tough, but absolutely fair. She always tells you what she wants you to take-away. And structure doesn't vary much from semester to semester. The problem sets are definitely tricky and require a lot of work to get through. Getting a great GSI for section helps a lot. I highly recommend Nate Bush if he's still a GSI. Don't buy the Case and Fair book. No laptops are allowed in class, so it is hard to take notes especially becuase she speeds through the lessons. Comment: Very engaging and knowledgeable lecturer. Her goal in teaching the class really is to educate her students on how to understand the economic side of the world, being able to read and understand news articles and how to parse the sometimes unintelligible speak of economists. The five problem sets are designed quite well and have very similar questions to those on the exam. Missing points on problem sets is no problem because you can make them up with iclicker points by simply attending lecture. There should be no problem getting 50/50 on the problem sets as long as you maintain an 8/10 average on them and go to class. Overall, one of the best professors I have seen.

Comment: Olney is one of the best. She knows Econ and covers the concepts very well. Be sure to use her textbooks (Macro and Microeconomics as a second language) because the text copies verbatim what she says in lecture. Tests are detailed and in depth, with at least one new application of a concept learned in class but never explicitly stated.

Comment: Olney is a GREAT professor. She knows what she's talking about and she knows how to get you to understand what she's talking about. Her tests are really time pressured, so use every second you have preciously. Overall the assignments are useful for brushing up on our understanding of concepts. Reading the textbook is key...as is reading for any classes you have, but just understand that if you have a GSI that is always confusing you...reading is even MORE important because economics is a hit or miss. You either get it. Or you don't. Ask for help if you don't get it. I haven't been to her office hours yet, but I'm sure she's helpful given my impression of her from all the lectures I've attended (all of them!) =)

Comment: Econ 1 is not an interesting class. The material is easier than AP Econ. If you took it, definitely skip this class and go on to the 100 or 101 series. Professor Olney is a clear lecturer and her exams are based off the homework. This is one of the easier introductory courses in Berkeley.

Comment: The class is extremely easy, in my opinion. The problem, however, is that it's both HUGE (600+) and a very basic intro class. To clarify, this class is a mix of Haas, "easy" Econ (100 route), "hard" Econ (101 route), and a ton of other people from L&S. What this means is that you won't be in a class with a number geniuses who destroy curves like you would be in Math 1A/B, Chem 1A, Phys 7A/7B, etc. The problem, however, is because of this (and the size of the class) the exams are graded is an incredibly stupid (my opinion) fashion in order to fight grade inflation. Rather than grading you on concepts (which, remember, are easy in this class) the graders nit-pick for the most ridiculous things (I literally lost points on a test because I didn't explain WHY Russian people like Vodka). You'll be frustrated by this, a lot. On the bright side, the class requires almost 0 work and you really don't need to study at all to do DECENT on the midterms.

She makes every topic seem very interesting with a well thought out sequence of readings, and exams are very fair and similar to prior years.
