MATH 1A (Fall 2014)

Comment: Love Olga, she's so much fun. Her lectures are easy to follow, even though she can go on to some difficult things from time to time (she doesn't test you on those really difficult things thought). Don't underestimate the exams though.

Comment: AVOID THIS WOMAN AT ALL COSTS!!! Her assignments were online-based and the examples followed the book. It's easy to get a 100% on homework. But in terms of exams and teaching I give her a 0. Holtz is obviously too brilliant to be teaching Math 1A. During lecture we talk about calculus (for Math 1A) for about 10 minutes and the rest of the time on tangents. Not the "I like to talk about my life" tangents, but actual tangents about theoretical mathematics. Her lectures don't actually teach us and I found lectures to be a waste of time. I learned everything from my GSI. Her exams are actually doable IF she actually taught us. I felt so disjointed in her class and I regret not taking Yuan (the easier teacher).

Comment: She is clearly brilliant, but should not be teaching 1A. Her tests were ridiculously hard, more tricky than trying to test what we know. Homework was somewhat helpful but sometime unrelated to what we are learning or being tested on. Lectures were a mess, she often went on tangents or overcomplicated basic concepts. Only passed because of prior calc experience and a helpful GSI

Comment: it's a hard class to teach in general, so it's easy to feel like the professor isn't doing her job...but overall she's relatively not that bad. she covers all the material, rapidly (but that's due to the nature of the course), and her exams are hard, but they are VERY closely related to her mock exams and previous semesters' exams, so if you study enough you should be good. My best suggestion for this class (especially the differential equations part) is to do EVERY ODD PROBLEM IN THE BOOK. It'll pay off.

MATH 54 (Fall 2011)

Overall Assignments Exams Helpfulness Enthusiasm
27 60 54 50 25

Comment: Seems pretty indifferent to the class. Often showed up late and lectured directly out of book. Her notation can be confusing (she uses different symbols than book and GSIs) and her lectures often lack direction. Homework is pretty generic for any math class (out of the textbook), can be lengthy, and is graded for accuracy. No quizzes in section! Read the book and attend section with a good GSI (even if it's not your own) and you will do fine. Exams were fair although 2nd midterm had average of 45% mostly because it was too long.

MATH 54 (Fall 2011)

Overall Assignments Exams Helpfulness Enthusiasm
25 34 39 22 13

Comment: Olga Holtz clearly knows a great deal about the subject matter, but is determined to release her knowledge in painfully desiccated fragments. Assignments are questions selected from the textbook--tedious, rarely helpful to a significant degree, tedious, and most of all, tedious. Exams are arbitrarily created questions which test dusty corners of lecture material. The usage of "cheat sheets" is allowed and encouraged, but alas, overwhelmingly futile. Success in this course is entirely dependent on how well one can absorb his textbook.

MATH 54 (Fall 2011)

Overall Assignments Exams Helpfulness Enthusiasm
23 50 66 27 29

Comment: Shes good looking, but that is about it. Its a shame, but she simply doesn't care about the class. Assigns arbitrary homework (one exercise referenced a chapter that was not even in the book), tests that are too long for the allotted time period, and her lectures are basically mangled and mixed regurgitations of the textbook. To do well in Math 54, your GSI is your most important resource. Find a good GSI and stick to him (doesnt have to be your section GSI), and the GSI and the book are the most valuable resources. Holtz comes to class 10 seconds before it starts Berkeley time and leaves the lecture hall 10 seconds after the class ends. Covers material lightly, expects students to do the rest at home. Missed ~15% of lectures for some reason or another, and at the PDE (more challenging) part of the course. Generally a lot of wasted potential, as I genuinely liked linear algebra, and PDEs and Fourier series have their charm after you have battled through them, but Holtz does not help you take that extra step.

Comment: I can't really explain why, but her lectures were really hard to pay attention to. It was difficult to tell what was happening a lot of the time. I basically learned all of the material from my gsi's lectures, because Holtz's didn't really help. Homework often takes a long time to do. First midterm was ok, second midterm average was like an F+, but the final was suspiciously not that bad. Try not to take this class with her.

Comment: Holtz is a good lecturer on certain days, but bad on others. Seems to mock people who don't get the material in lecture, but it's her way of saying "you should know this by now". However, linear algebra and differential equations compacted into nearly 700 pages of textbook is hard to digest even if broken down weekly in the homework assignments. Homework is always long and painful, but it goes for similar courses. Exams composed of questions similar to the ones encountered in homework and review. Understanding homework and review problems is essential.

Comment: First of all, Holtz was not here for a couple of lectures, thus she has no idea what the substitute teacher has taught us. There is a discordance b/w what she teaches and what the sub teachers. Homework can be quite difficult, since what she goes over in class do not resemble the hw at all. There are 30 problems per week, and they become longer as the semester progresses. Exams are okay, given that you have done your homework. The difficulty is just like the homework. HOWEVER, I think that she asks us to do too much in an hour. That is barely time to finish the exam, let alone to review your answers. Nvr been to her office hour, so cannot comment much on helpfulness. But during lecture she kinda make fun of students who do not get the materials. Wouldn't have taken her if my schedule could fit the 8am class ..

Comment: She always comes to class very well dressed. Unfortunately this is the only thing of note in lecture. Every time I go to lecture I think I understand and she confuses me with her poor explanations. The book presents it more clearly even though she literally looks at the book and writes it down on the board. She could at least make it less obvious by writing down the things for the book into her notes. Her exams are very fair. They reward students who naturally understand or study. Nothing ridiculously hard or out of the scope of things we've seen.

Comment: Holtz is clearly a genius at her subject, but this unfortunately does not translate over to her teaching skills. Lecture is more boring than watching paint dry. Weekly homework consists of 30 problems every time, which is a lot. Midterm #2 coming up and she cuts her students no slack, but instead assigns 34 problems. Tests are ridiculously hard and midterm scores are averaged at about a C. Don't know if a curve exists, but very unhappy with this professor way before the semester even ends... Don't take her if you can help it... After finishing her course, I can honestly still say that this was the course I've taken EVER. After two weeks of lecture, my friends and I basically learned everything on our own. Although we didn't get As in the course, we still feel accomplished seeing as we did it without lecture or discussion. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! or don't, it's your grade.

Comment: Professor was boring and unhelpful, I only went to lecture once, and only went to discussion for quizzes. The Linear Algebra material is relatively easy to learn by yourself, but once the class gets to Differential Equations, it becomes ridiculously hard. Homework was easy until the final chapters, but that's what you have homework drops for. Holtz's exams were very fair and not very difficult. Comment: Math 54 is just one of those classes that you really don't need a professor for. I taught myself out of the book, I suspect a good GSI could do the same. I didn't go to lecture much but when I did, it was straight out of the book, down to specific the proofs and example problems. She wasn't a bad professor, she just didn't really contribute anything new to my understanding of the material. Comment: 1 Midterm and 1 Final. Midterm covers the entire portion of the course on linear algebra, and Final is comprehensive with an emphasis on Differential Equations. Questions on midterm/final are harder than homework questions. Average for MT was abt 30/50 which she said was about a B. Lectures are straight from the book with very few examples, mostly just proofs. She said that the people with the highest scores attended a few different GSI sections every week (not sure how she knows that) but that sounds kind of ridiculous. Very few people attend lecture and those who do probably just go to look at Holtz. Basic proofs needed for MT/Final, such as proving whether something is a subspace and stuff like that.
