Comment: Avoid at all costs. The final turned out to be entirely differential equations despite him only covering it for less than 2 weeks. Also, his syllabus specified that we could skip the second midterm (20%) and add 10% weight to our final and 10% to our first midterm. Since I got an 100% on the first midterm, I skipped the second one because it was supposed to be a free 10%, but Voiculescu ended up just taking 10% off of my entire grade instead of adding it to the first midterm. Lectures are also completely useless as his handwriting is terrible and his accent is not understandable at all.

Comment: He is really quite good. Incredibly good natured and clever, and both show in the way he teaches. He has a clear train of logic which flows through lectures, and a nice way of presenting the material through as many proofs as he has time. Most importantly, for me, was that he is very understanding of how it is to not get the material. He is totally missing that slight arrogant asshole streak which many math professors have. This also means that he is good at explaining things from an approachable angle, and he was very understanding and helpful once that I went to office hours. All of this is, of course, provided you put a bit of effort into understanding his accent, but really, that's a detail. Assignments were ok, some were incredibly short and easy and others were very much the opposite, but nothing tragic. Exams varied (one easy, one quite difficult, one relatively ok) but in general if you went to lecture they were quite predictable.

Comment: All of my professors I rate for my first year at Cal is above 80, except this one. Someone please tells me why he is hired by Berkeley, and how does people understand him! He never cares his students, even never replying to emails! His exams are incredible abnormal. I admit the first exam is super easy, but from midterm 2, they really suck. Final is unbelievable the worst. There are NO previous final on the internet and he will not give them to you. You don't know what may be included in the exam and the only thing you will know is your bad and angry face when you are doing your final. Please, any future 54 students enroll another professor's lecture and let the department fire the guy.

Comment: Barely 1/4 of the class showed up to lecture after the third week. I myself stopped going a few weeks after because what he taught in class simply did not help during exams. The reviewer below says the grading scheme was irrational, but the rubric is pretty standard for your typical STEM class. Moreover, 15% of the grade was homework instead of the usual homework + quizzes. Based on the exams, I think he is on the easier side. His exams are short and reasonable, although the final was a different story. He is funny sometimes, and overall your standard math professor with an accent.

Comment: Pathetically the WORST instructor I have ever met during my first year at Cal! Despite his "old lad in the Up" look, he is pathetically terrible in every sense, from his bloody awful Romanian accent (sometimes I was wondering if a Romanian could understand him at all), to his intolerably cipher-like handwriting (not to mention the numerous horrible grammar errors within - or, is there a sense of grammar in his mind at all?). Also, he is extremely incapable of handling the modern technology - when he managed to keep the projector working well for the whole lecture, you would win the lottery for that day lol. His exams are just irrational - 20 total marks for a midterm and 40 for the final, with 1/3 of it True/False, and the rest of it annoying computations (even if you have got the correct answer, you can hardly have the confidence to go on to the next question without double check); the first midterm was naïvely easy (mean score: 17 out of 20), but the final went too far beyond what he had taught (if he taught us something at all). Furthermore he is hardly accessible. I sent him emails several times but he only replied my first one. Avoid him at all cost, or prepare yourself for self-study (or if you are lucky enough, have a fantastic GSI). (I got an A for this course anyway, but I do not think he has ever made a trivial contribution to this)

Comment: Everything you've read about Voiculescu is true. The bad lectures and the sloppy handwriting, true. I tried going to a few lectures, just to give him a chance but they were bad and didn't improve. The homework was pretty standard-- right out of the book. His tests were half computational and half true or false. The computational part often had messy numbers that made it easy to make simple mistakes and the true or false were very conceptual and largely came down to whether or not you could remember some theorem from the book. There was really no point in asking him questions during class. He can't hear and answers rudely sometimes. This class basically comes down to how good your GSI is and how good you are at teaching yourself.

Comment: It is extremely difficult to understand him in lecture. After one lecture (one-third of the way through the semester) of watching him pause lecture to scream at a student for talking for 5 minutes straight, I felt stupid for not skipping earlier. The best way to learn the material is if you have an amazing GSI, I learned almost everything from him!

Comment: I can neither understand the professor nor read his handwriting; attending lectures is more or less pointless. You're forced to study either from the book, or from your GSI; if your GSI also has an accent, you're almost completely on your own. The homework is pretty good - long enough for decent practicing of the problems, but not too long to be tedious. The first midterm was almost trivially easy, making it more of a test of not making stupid mistakes.

Comment: Going to lecture was close to useless... It's really hard to understand what he's saying or read his handwriting, but when you could discern what he was teaching, it was a good way of learning the basics. His exams are very fair and relatively easy though, and his assignments aren't too long. Overall a good experience.

Comment: I don't quite understand why people stop going to lectures, because apart from his Romanian accent and his handwriting (which you could probably cope within a few weeks), his lectures are really awesome. In fact, in some topics, his proofs are even better than those in the book! Although, his exams were mostly True-False Problems, which means you have to be very careful because his grades are not curved. His finals were just too short and a single mistake could set you off, but I liked his lectures anyway.

Comment: I dislike his 20 point midterms -> one error can cost you hugely. However, I managed to get an A in the class despite having a B going into the final, which means the final was hugely important. Pretty much same as all other posts, no one can understand him. During the final (one of the only times I was there to listen to him talking), he had to repeat a statement like 5 times before anyone could understand. But he seems like a nice man.

Comment: This man really wishes the best for his students, but he does not seem to sure how to make it the best. His heavy accent and slow pace has made me skip all his lectures, so I have been self-studying. His exams have no curve, and are rather set at a really generous scale. His assignments are straightforward and cover only the important parts.

Comment: I would be worried that the professor would see this rating, but...I don't think he how's how to use a computer; everything for the class (tests, syllabus, etc. ) was written on a typewriter. You couldn't understand the man if you were Romanian yourself, and his handwriting might as well be in Arabic. Basically, avoid at all costs and do yourself a favor and find yourself a good textbook (not Lay) and teach yourself or attend another lecture.

Comment: Probably the worst professor I have ever met in Cal. 1. His grading is really bad. One trivial mistake may lower your grade to another level. Most people get B or B- in his class. 2. Homework assignments are easy and not that much at first, but once he gets to the end of the semester, he will always fall behind his schedule, so he will teach faster and give homework which takes forever to complete. 3.Can't explain things clearly in class. Everybody knows his accent. No one understands what he means. Is he speaking English? 4. Personality is not that good. Kinda arrogant. Not friendly or helpful in office hour. Actually sometimes he is even out during office hour. 5. Never answers email. That's why I hate him, even if I got a B+ in the class (takes me probably 8 hours per day to study the course. My major GPA was 3.7 before taking this class!!) Avoid him at any cost.

He'll say things like, "I don't want to burden the blackboard," or "It's not worth the chalk to write this down." Things aren't any better in office hours.
