Comment: Very proof-oriented. Exams were challenging, especially the second midterm. Probably the hardest professor I've had at Cal. Overall, very friendly, except when the "Everybody Dance Now" students crashed his class.

Comment: Olsson was a cool and nice instructor. However, if you haven't take Calculus previous to coming to Cal his tests are very theory-based and are very different from normal problem solving homework problems in the homeworks. Skip Math 1A if you have the credit unless you need it for Medical School.

Comment: Professor Olson is a good lecturer, and he gives reasonable assignments, but his exams are annoying. On the exams he tries to trick you, making the tests less a test of your knowledge, and more a test of how carefully you can read his questions. He meant well and genuinely cared about what he was teaching, but his class was boring, useless, and unfair.

Comment: I didn't find him extremely helpful during office hours until series solutions in 17.4. His lectures aren't too bad, pretty clear, and homework is graded on completion. I didn't do to well on both midterms-- they were a bit tricky, but I do remember there being one problem coming straight from the homework, so do your homework! And the final was really hard. Really hard. Like stuff I've never seen before. Go to his review lecture, it'll be really helpful. I studied really hard for the final though, so I think that's how I pulled my grade up.

Overall Assignments Exams Helpfulness Enthusiasm

Comment: The only thing to really worry about in this class is his final exam. He will give complex problems that will require you to strictly know the mathematical definitions of what a limit is, what the integral test is, what the Taylor's Inequality is, etc. On his final exam, he gave what appeared to be an impossible integral to evaluate, so watch out for very difficult problems on his final exam, which is a good chunk of your grade. His homework questions are mostly odd-numbered, so getting the solutions manual for his books might be a good idea. Overall, he's a good lecturer; the only real thing to watch out for are his hard exams.

Comment: Olsson is a very fair professor. He generally goes through lecture rather slowly and explains in a very clear manner (although some people thought it was rather slow). He does like to go through proofs a lot, so depending on the type of math student you are, you may or may not like his teaching method. I got a 5 on the BC exam and thought this course was rather easy to keep up with (yes, I got scared from all the reviews on ratemyprofessor.com as well). Homework is tedious and easy, but it reviews a lot of basic skills. Olsson does a pretty good job reviewing for midterms and exams. Definitely a good professor!

Comment: SKIP THIS COURSE (math 1B) If you have BC Calc credit and you got a 5 on the AP, you should definitely skip this course. If you are scared that "Berkeley math is harder" than highschool, and that you don't have a solid understanding of calculus, you can take Math 54 instead of Math 53 (math 53 is multi-var, math 54 is not as dependent on the material in Calculus BC). READ THE BOOK get the textbook from the student store (don't buy it just look through it), and see if you know the material. If you got a 5 on the BC calc test, odds are you will know 90% of the material in the book. There are some extensions such as Taylor series or Second-order differential equations that you might not know, but you could teach yourself that in a few weeks, rather than sacrificing your GPA to an "easy" class with hard tests and GSIs that grade really really really hard. As for Yildiz, I can't say much about him. His lectures were boring and I just did the homework during class. Then I stopped going to lectures. He seems like a nice guy.

Comment: Olsson isn't the worst teacher out there, but he's not the best either. His lectures were fine but they weren't very organized and he didn't seem to understand students' questions. Exams are tricky but they're heavily curved.

Comment: Okay, so the guy isn't a very entertaining professor, but it's probably just his character, not exactly his fault. I can't say he has gotten me very enthused about even one of the topics in 1B yet. The homework is NOT ENOUGH to prepare you for the exam - but if you study correctly, with friends and your GSI, the exams will seem remarkably fair. Olsson is a good back-up teacher if you can't find anyone really good, simply because he's not terrible at all.

Comment: NO NO NO! This class was so confusing and not helpful at all! I'm glad I covered all the material already in high school! If you know what he's supposed to be teaching, you realize how bad this professor is. Going to lecture is a waste of time because he keeps jumping form one thing to another and it's impossible to follow a rational path! I didn't learn anything from lecture! Discussion with the GSI was way better

Comment: Olsson, M C is a very nice professor who prepared a lot for the course(113). He listed a very detailed schedule for the course and covered the whole stuff(Group, Ring, Field) perfectly. Maybe he is not a good professor to some guys because he never wasted time on discussing 'philosophy of math' and sometimes he didn't want to answer the questions students raised. However, I think this is totally understandable. Abstract Algebra is meant to be a hard course and the pace is incredibly quick. If you don't know the basic definitions, you will always raise 'silly' questions which are totally meaningless. The final exam is very fair and easy.

MATH 113 (Fall 2014)

Overall Assignments Exams Helpfulness Enthusiasm
43 62 24 32 57

Comment: The homework was reasonable but he didn't post solutions or leave comments so I felt the homework was a complete waste. The GSI (Jason Ferguson) for the course didn't answer questions via email and even called me by the wrong name! I could tell Olson was upset with us after the first midterm (most people did poorly on a few of the questions). He gave almost no partial credit on the exams. Math 113 is already a hard subject to understand and Olsson only made it harder by doing a rather poor job. He didn't seem like a very nice person or someone you'd want to ask for help. Once in class someone asked a question and he responded with "you'll understand it later in the class" (which of course was a complete lie). Unfortunately, there are few in the Berkeley math department who could do better.
