Comment: He was a bit hard to understand at first with his accent, but turns out he was a pretty chill guy. If you listen to carefully to his lectures he'll tell you what's on the test, but he won't blatantly tell you. He will hint at it. ex: If he does the same problem TWICE in class, and it's a relatively involved problem, chances are it's on the test. Most people didn't pick up on that, so that's why you'll hear horror stories about 1B, but if you pay attention, work hard, and go to OH you'll do well.

Comment: The first exam was tricky. The other two, weren't too bad. Each problem seemed to have a trick, but just redoing select problems from the hw was enough. Also put example problems from class on the midterm and final (actually he put the same one because kids didn't go to class and weren't able to figure it out the first time). Sometimes a tid bit boring, but overall future math classes made me wish I was back in his.

Comment: Really liked the professor. He went off on tangents sometimes but they demonstrated the applications of our lessons in real life. His first exam was pretty difficult, but he adjusted things as the semester went on. Second midterm and final included a lot of in-class examples as gifts for students that attended and took notes.

Comment: Sometimes hard to stay awake but if you do, you learn a lot. Assignments are fair, and tests can make or break you. Final is usually 50%, but if you pay attention in class and discussion, should be fine. Make sure to come to class and take notes; he tends to put examples from class on the tests. A little difficult to understand sometimes (Australian accent) but really great during office hours. Brilliant professor.

Comment: I took calculus bc in high school, but even that wasn't enough for this class. His exams are difficult and very different from the plug in and solve exams from high school. You have to KNOW the concept not just how to solve a problem. My GSI was really helpful and actually went over a lot of things that were on the exam before we took them. Every question he puts on the exams either on past exams (available on the math archive) or something he goes over in class. Jones has a clear method of teaching as long as you don't get lost somewhere in the middle. Very receptive to questions. I would recommend his as a teacher, but don't expect it to be easy. The curve is harsh.

Comment: Really funny professor. He tells all these "true stories" (i.e. jokes) that are very entertaining. Feel like I definitely learned things, even having taken AP Calc BC. Interesting class and material, but the exams were very tough. (midterm 1: 100/150 was an A, midterm 2 average: 75/150)

Comment: Homework was straight from the book, nothing surprising. Accent is a little difficult to understand. The tests are unpredictable though. The first midterm was horrible, nothing looked familiar, and then all of a sudden he springs a midterm that was practically from lecture, making it difficult to study for. exams are multiple choice on concepts and then long answers.

Comment: Exams are extremely difficult so make sure you pay attention in your discussion to the challenge-type questions. Aim to be above average here. Otherwise, lectures have a bit of droning (it's math, can't expect much) but Jones tries to lighten the atmosphere with random jokes and rather corny humor, though it's funny. He has an accent but not one that makes him unable to be understood.

Comment: Exams are hard but expect a rather generous curve if you score above average. He has a funny New Zealand accent and his rather clumsy behavior and corny humor makes class rather enjoyable.

Comment: Difficult exams, but they make you think (no where as easy as the assignments). Funny guy -- when a student asked him whether his "12" was a "12" or an "R," he changed his "12" into "twelve." A student exclaimed, "SO MANY VARIABLES!" Dry sense of humor & random jokes (when students are obviously bored). Very enthusiastic.

Comment: Professor Jones really knows his stuff. The 1B material is hard is its own right, but Jones does an excellent job of giving his students an understanding of the material in lecture. This class is more than manageable if you go to office hours for anything you don't understand and actually put in the time to earn a good grade. Just because you got a 5 on the Calc BC test doesn't mean you know the material; trust me, there are things in this class that you've never seen before. Be warned though: Jones likes to use examples to explain concepts, which I really appreciated, but he has a think New Zealand accent and tends to mumble towards the end of lecture. Very thorough professor, recommended!
