Comment: Professor Majda was interesting and was generally helpful and really wanted students to think about the material critically and apply it. He always told us that memorization was not an expectation of this class, and was available for office hours after every lecture. I hated Sapling, but that's beyond his control, and the exams were okay. He was enthusiastic about the class and did make broader connections with the world around us. He's cute, and very European, and doesn't hold back on his progressive views towards science and politics, and criticizes the United States for being so... American. I didn't find it offensive because I agreed with him, despite being American, but I can see how some others might be offended.

Comment: I hold a very endearing attitude towards Majda just because he is such a cute man who I'd want as a grandpa. At the same time, his lectures weren't great; the slides were helpful, but I spent more time snoozing and spacing out than actually paying attention. If it weren't for iClicker points, I wouldn't be attending lecture. Tests were doable, although I screwed up my first midterm because I blew it off and didn't study. Doing practice problems from the book and from Sapling, the online homework they make you do, was really helpful, although many Sapling questions were unnecessarily hard. GSI's aren't very helpful in this class. To make the most of them, I would suggest picking the smartest one and consistently going to office hours. Tests are very conceptual, so make sure you have a deep understanding of the concepts. That's why they are fair. This class is very doable; getting an A is hard, but getting a C+ is harder.

Comment: I started going to Majda's lectures over Arnold's mid semester because I was too lazy to make the 9-10 lecture (Majda's were at 1pm), and he was definitely NOT as bad as people said he was compared to Arnold. I couldn't really tell any difference at first. There's a lot less people who attend his lectures, and he's more willing to stop lecture and take questions which is a definite bonus. However, it IS true that he explains concepts with less clarity than Arnold does, so if you have little to no background in chemistry, DEFINITELY go to Arnold's lectures. If you took AP Chem in high school though, there shouldn't be too much difference b/w Arnold and Majda.

Comment: I didn't know jack about Chemistry heading into this class my freshmen year. Hell, I'm not even a premed, I'm a Math major, but I was curious and wanted to keep my options open. I actually enjoyed Chem 1A. I personally felt the difficulty was overstated as the class really wasn't all that difficult. The assignments were a pain, but I ended up just going to the ASC center and people were always willing to help. Of the 3 lecturers, I went to Majda the most. I really liked his attitude and he was generally a really nice guy. You can tell he's ridiculously smart as the material of Chem 1A is absolutely trivial to him which sometimes resulted in poor explanations as he felt the idea was entirely intuitive. In terms of exams, they weren't all that bad. They were actually based on applying your knowledge and not just regurgitating facts which I liked. I dunno, Chem 1A was made out to be this beast of a class and it ended up being pretty fun. My only advice to give is to actually think critically about what you are learning. Don't just memorize the information, understand it.

Comment: Prof Majda is very enthusiastic and always tries to make the class interesting. Demos he performs are fun, whereas OWL homework terrible, but they are changing that I guess. He may have a language barrier on passing through the material but going to office hours would help you a lot I anything is unclear.

Comment: Majda is smart, no doubt. You can just tell. But he's not the best teacher. He just seems to have problems imparting all of that knowledge to his students. OWL homework? Probably what I hated most about this class. Time consuming and difficult. My GSI wasn't a very generous grader when it came to them either. Exams? People, it's Chem 1A. What you've heard is probably true. Midterms are pretty difficult and the final is just as difficult but not harder it seemed. But that's to be expected. It's a weeder course. I thought I was doing fairly well but I ended up short of an A at the end. However, all in all I actually kind of enjoyed the subject.

Comment: Professor Majda definitely knows his chemistry there is no doubt about that. But that means that chemistry is "obvious" everything is "obvious." That got a little old but was fun to joke around with friends during class. Seriously if there is any way you can go to Stacey's lecture. If you can just go once or twice a week to her lecture do. It is definitely worth it. If not Majda's lecture will suffice if you watch the webcast of Stacy's. The homework for this class was kind of annoying. It is this online multiple choice and short answer. It can be tricky. Also it wasn't graded right the whole semester so no one new how they were doing. The tests were challenging and honestly you just get lucky sometimes with happening to know certain things. This class takes up a lot of time especially if you haven't taken AP chemistry and everything is knew. I never knew how I would do on each midterm but I scored consistently. The final was more challenging than the midterms.

Comment: Please note that even if you are enrolled in either Majda or Arnold's lectures, you can still attend Stacy's lectures and still get iClicker credit. Stacy is by far the best professor of the three and my best professor this semester. Not only is she a brilliant lecturer, but she comes to class every morning with a smile on her face. Majda has terrible handwriting and a thick accent and Arnold doesn't explain things very clearly at times. OWL can be a bit frustrating at times, but just form a regular study group to work on it every week. The multiple choice are pretty easy, but the free responses can be hard. Start early in the week so that you can ask your GSI at office hours for help. I regret not attending her office hours until the end of the semester; GO TO ALL OF THEM. Her office hours are amazing and clear up concepts that were gone by too quickly in lecture. While lectures slides are a great way to teach, sometimes they fly right over your head because you need the diagram or model to be drawn out by hand for you. The exams can be difficult and are unlike any you've probably experienced before. Rather than asking you to regurgitate definitions or memorizations, you are being asked to apply concepts from lecture to scenarios you've never been exposed to before. For example, you learn in class about intermolecular attractions but on exams you'll be asked to predict the Moh's hardness of a compound based on its structure. Exams are about 75% multiple choice and 25% free response. The class is graded on an ever so slight curve with an A being approximately 85%+, but don't feel discouraged from helping out classmates because you're being curved against all 3 lectures totaling 1500 students, so helping a few friends won't really affect the curve at all. Overall, I would definitely recommend this course (well, usually you take it because you're forced to) and this instructor because if you look at the grade distributions you'll see that Stacy's classes average B+ and other instructors' classes average a B. Chem 1A is a great first class to take at Cal; the staff really wants to ease you into the college scene and be a successful undergrad.

Comment: I really enjoyed this class! Majda can at times be difficult to understand, but he is really passionate about chemistry. I know he is a very smart guy, but sometimes he has trouble conveying the material in a cogent, easily understandable way. Besides this, the class itself isn't hard! I recommend Stacy and Arnold more. Stacy is by far the best of the three though.

Comment: Chem 1A is much easier than everyone says it is. The class is scaled, and about 30-35% get A's- don't be afraid! It's not a weeder! The assignments are minimal(OWL online homework is easy, but tedious) , though the iclicker is annoying because it means you have to attend lecture. If you understand the most important concepts (equilibrium, acid/base, gas laws, thermodynamics, and intermolecular forces) you will do just fine. Specifically, Majda has awful handwriting, but he makes up for it with his unintentional humor. I never went to OH so I can't say much about his helpfulness.

Comment: He's very enthusiastic about chemistry, but that's about it. We always seemed to run out of time at the end of lectures and he would say, 'come to my office hours if you want to understand what's going on!' I did go to his office hours and found them more helpful than the actual lectures, but I think that going to office hours should be an option, not something that you're obligated to do if you want to understand the material. Tests were incredibly hard and he didn't do much to help us prepare for them. The homework usually wasn't incredibly difficult, but it didn't help prepare for the tests.

Comment: Professor Majda is funny, but he rushes through explanations of concepts, which makes it difficult to understand what's going on in lecture. I attended both his and Stacy's lectures, and students in his lecture always had lower percentages of people getting the iClicker questions right - and he didn't really do much to clarify for them. I also attended his office hours, and when I asked him a question, he responded "What do YOU think?" ... So not really that helpful. But he's a funny guy and he knows his stuff.

I went to his lecture about 7 or 8 times because it fit better into my schedule and it was later in the day. His accent makes it hard to understand what hes talking about plus he was never able to cover the same amount of material as the other proffesors (they use the same ppt's and go at the same pace, so majda just never covered the stuff he didnt have time for). plus his explanations are lousy and he never really answers the question asked.

The profs are there to guide you and teach you what to learn and it's up to you to do practice problems and what not. I guess lab helped you understand the concept as well, and GSIs are always helpful. But anyway, keep in mind that this IS a weaver class so grade curve is high and it's competitive.
